Good Friday morning!


Maybe you are aware that America's population passed the 300 million mark Tuesday, without counting in the estimated 11 million to 12 million illegal immigrants. The 300 million mark prompted alarm from environmentalists who fear the scarce natural resources that can support additional population, as was the case of Thomas Malthus known for his pessimistic view on population growth through An Essay on the Principle of Population. Anti-immigration groups instantaneously argued that the rapid population growth had led to deterioration in the quality of American lives. Notable things are that about half of the U.S. population growth is due to Hispanics and that America has had much more Asian and Latino immigration than white and black.

USA is the only advanced country whose population is substantially increasing, while the economies of Western Europe face retirement crises more severely than America because there are fewer young workers to support retirees.

Also, the recent survey shows that unmarried households reign in the US for the first time. In other words, the number of single women households, single men households and non-family households or gay couples is larger than that of traditional households. This number does not include the unmarried men and women living alone. Social scientists attribute such a sea change in American life to long-standing high divorce rates, out-of-wedlock births, growing life expectancy and women's earning potential.


The social implication: we are moving towards a much more individualistic society. In particular, children will be much more isolated because not only will their parents be both working, but they'll have fewer siblings, cousins, uncles and aunts.

Are these a far cry from us?

Last but not least, some of you must have been moved by a pledge made by Mr. Chun Shin-Il, a Korean philanthropist and chairperson of Sejoong-Namo, a travel agency and web-design software-maker, to donate more than 10 million dollars to schools and cultural institutes. He has been making donations to schools, including Pohang Technology Institute, since 1985. It's quite bliss for us to breathe under the same sky and on the same soil along with a Korean Buffett.

Angel on the Highway

I was driving home from a meeting this evening at about 5, stuck in traffic on Colorado Blvd., and my car started to choke and sputter and finally died.

I barely managed to coast, cruising into a gas station, glad only that I would not be blocking traffic and would not have a somewhat warm spot to wait for the tow truck. Before I could make a call, I saw a woman walking out of the Wal-Mart building, and it looked like she slipped on some ice and fell into a gas pump. So I got out to see if she was okay. When I got there, it looked more like she had been overcome by sobs than that she had fallen. She was a young woman who looked really haggard with dark circles under her eyes. She dropped something as I helped her up, and I picked it up to give it to her. It was a nickel.

At that moment, everything came into focus for me: a crying woman, an ancient Suburban crammed full of stuff with 3 kids in the back (1 in a car seat), and a gas pump reading $4.95. I asked her if she was okay and if she needed help, and she just kept saying "I don't want my kids to see me crying," so we stood on the other side of the pump from her car. She said she was driving to California and that things were very hard for her right now.

So, I asked, "And you were praying?" That made her back away from me a little, but I assured her I was not a crazy person and said, "He heard you, and He sent me."

I took out my card and swiped it through the card reader on the pump so she could fill up her car completely, and while it was fueling walked to the next door McDonald's and bought 2 big bags of food, some gift certificates for more, and a big cup of coffee. She gave the food to the kids in the car who attacked it like wolves, and we stood by the pump eating fries and talking a little.

She told me her name, and that she lived in Kansas City. Her boyfriend left 2 months ago and she had not been able to make both ends meet. She knew she wouldn't have money to pay the rent on January 1st, and finally, in desperation, had called her parents, with whom she had not spoken for about 5 years. They lived in California and said she could come live with them and try to get on her feet there.

So, she packed up everything she owned in the car. She told the kids they were going to California for Christmas, but not that they were going to live there.

I gave her my gloves, a little hug and said a quick prayer with her for safety on the road. As I was walking over to my car, she said, "So, are you like an angel or something?"

This definitely made me cry. I said, "Sweetie, at this time of year angels are really busy, so sometimes God uses regular people."

It was so incredible to be a part of someone else's miracle. And of course, you guessed it, when I got in my car it started right away and got me home with no problem. I'll put it in the shop tomorrow for a check, but I suspect the mechanic won't find anything wrong.

Sometimes the angels fly close enough that you can hear the flutter of their wings.

천회장은 1985년이래 포항공대 등 학교에 기부를 계속하고 있습니다. 우리가 한국판 (워렌) 버펫과 더불어 같은 하늘 아래 같은 땅 위에서 숨을 쉬고 있다는 것은 정말 축복입니다.

<고속도로에서 만난 천사>

저녁 5시 무렵 미팅을 마치고 차를 몰고 집으로 가다 콜로라도로에서 차가 막혀 꼼짝 못하고 있는 데 엔진이 퍼드덕거리더니 마침내 시동이 꺼져 버렸다.

나는 가까스로 차를 주유소로 끌고 갔다. 교통을 막고 견인차가 올 때까지 조금 따뜻한 곳에서 기다리지 않아도 되어 퍽 다행스러웠다.
전화를 걸기 전에 나는 한 여인이 월마트 건물에서 걸어 나오는 것을 보았고, 그 여자는 얼음 위에 미끄러져 주유 펌프에 넘어지는 듯이 보였다.

그래서 나는 그 여자가 괜찮은지 보려고 차에서 내렸다. 여자가 있는 곳에 가보니 그 여자는 넘어졌다기 보다는 울음을 참고 있던 것처럼 보였다. 여자는 (울어서) 눈 아래 검은 자욱이 있는 정말로 초라해 보이는 젊은 여자였다. 내가 여자를 부축해 일으켜 세우려 하자 여자가 무엇을 떨어뜨렸고, 나는 그것을 주워 여자에게 건네주었다. 그것은 1센트 동전이었다.

그 순간 모든 것이 내 눈에 들어왔다. 울고 있는 여자, 세 명의 애들(한 명은 어린이용 씨트에 앉아 있는)과 짐이 뒷자리에 꽉 들어 차 있는 낡은 써버어번 웨건 그리고 4불95센트를 가리키고 있는 주유 펌프. 내가 여자에게 괜찮은지, 혹시 도움이 필요한지 묻자 여자는 "우리 애들이 내가 울고 있는 걸 보지 않았으면 좋겠어요."라는 말만 했다.

그래서 우리는 주유펌프를 사이에 두고 승용차 반대편으로 자리를 옮겼다. 여자는 캘리포니아로 가려는 데 지금 일이 아주 어렵게 됐다고 말했다.

그래서 나는 물었다. "그래서 (하나님께) 기도 드리고 있었나요?" 이 질문을 하자 여자는 내게서 약간 뒤로 물러섰으나 나는 여자에게 내가 이상한 사람이 아니라고 안심을 시킨 뒤 "하나님은 당신의 기도를 듣고 날 보내셨어요."하고 말했다.

나는 내 카드를 꺼내 주유 펌프의 카드 판독기에 긁고 여자가 기름을 완전히 가득 채울 수 있도록 했고, 여자가 기름을 채우는 동안 주유소 옆 맥도날드로 가서 큰 봉투로 2개 분량의 음식과 더 살 수 있는 상품권 몇 장과 큰 컵 분량의 커피를 사왔다. 여자가 차에 있는 애들에게 음식을 주자 애들은 마치 늑대 떼처럼 달려 들었고, 우리는 펌프 옆에 서서 프렌치 프라이를 먹으며 얘기를 했다.

여자는 내게 이름을 말해줬고 캔자스 시에 산다고 했다. 두 달 전 남자 친구가 떠났고 여자는 끼니를 때울 수가 없었다. 1월 1일 낼 집세를 줄 돈이 없어 마침내 할 수 없이 약 5년간이나 연락을 하지 않았던 부모님께 전화를 했다. 부모님들은 캘리포니아에 사시는 데 여자에게 내려와 같이 살며 살 방도를 찾아보라고 하셨다.

그래서, 여자는 가진 것 모두를 차에 채워 넣었다. 애들에게 크리스마스를 보내러 캘리포니아로 간다고 했지만 거기서 살 것이라고는 말하지 않았다.

나는 여자에게 내 장갑을 주고 포옹을 한 뒤 여자와 함께 여행 안전을 비는 짧은 기도를 드렸다. 내가 내 차를 향해 걸어가는 데 여자가 물었다. "저, 댁은 천사나 천사 비슷한 것인가요?"

그 질문을 듣자 나도 몰래 눈물이 났다. 나는 말했다. "젊은이, 해마다 이 맘 때엔 천사들이 정말 바쁘다오. 그래서 때때로 하나님은 보통 사람들도 이용한다오"

다른 사람의 기적의 일부가 된다는 것은 정말 놀라웠다. 물론, 여러분이 짐작하는 대로 내가 차에 타니 금새 시동이 걸렸고 나는 아무 문제없이 집에 돌아왔다. 내일 점검을 위해 차를 정비소에 맡길 것이지만, 정비공은 아무런 고장을 발견하지 못 할 것으로 생각한다.

때때로 천사들은 아주 가까이 날아 다니므로 여러분은 천사가 날개를 퍼드덕거리는 소리를 들을 수 있습니다.

여기 영양과 건강에 관한 결정적 얘기가 있습니다. 서로 다른 숱한 의학적 연구 끝에 진실을 알게 됐다는 것은 위안이지요.
