[Hank's Mail]Black October and Freeze!
Dear all,

Good Friday morning!

As T.S. Eliot, an American (naturalized English) poet and a Nobel prize-winner for Literature, stated in his poem, the Waste Land, April may be the cruelest month in terms of political and social unrest. However, in terms of economic unrest, concerning stock market crashes in particular, October may be the cruelest month as we recall Black Monday, October 28, 1929, which led to the Great Depression and another Black Monday, October 19, 1987, which recorded the second largest one-day decline in stock market history.

Thus, we are a little scared of Black Mondays, which again ensued on a Monday on September 17, 2001 when the greatest loss in DJIA history took place six days after the undreamed-of 9/11 terrorist attack in New York City. However, the Dow closed above 12,000 points for the first time ever on Thursday, October 19, 2006, the 19th anniversary of Black Monday. DJIA has been hovering around 12,000 points since then thanks to soft landing of the US economy, falling oil prices and a buoyant tech sector. What a relief!

And ¡¦ finally, October ended with its annual Halloween party. This tradition is celebrated in Ireland and many other Western nations on the night of October 31 mostly by children dressing in black scary costumes and going door-to-door collecting sweets by yelling "trick or treat!" On Halloween, many cities host parades like the Village Halloween Parade of the Big Apple and some schools host parades for the kids dressed up in costumes such as vampires, ghosts, witches, bats, Spider-Man, Islamic terrorists and US military personnel.

Such festivities are now also visible in our country. Some people show concern about contamination of cultural purity, while some people interpret it as a reflection of globalization. Given that the best way to learn a foreign language, above all, is to try to learn the culture, who can blame kids in Halloween costumes? As the occupants of the house are supposed to hand out small candies or chocolate bars to kids knocking at their doors, this may trigger social trend of give-out or donation which is very uncommon in our country.

Such a debate also reminds me of the tragic incident which occurred to a Japanese exchange student in 1992. A 16-year-old Japanese exchange student was searching for a party he had been invited to in a quiet neighborhood in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Thinking he had found the right house, Yoshihiro Hattori knocked on the door.

Not knowing that they had the wrong house, Yoshi and his American friend in Halloween costumes startled the kids living in the house. After having the front door shut in their face the two boys began walking back to Yoshi's car. Yoshi and his friend then turned back towards the house upon hearing the carport door open behind them.

Instead of seeing the party's host, the two boys were greeted by a "Freeze" and a .44 Magnum-carrying homeowner. When Yoshi failed to respond to the command "freeze" - a word he didn't understand - the man pointed the .44-caliber Magnum handgun at Yoshi's white John Travolta-style disco costume and pulled the trigger.

The man mistook him for an intruder and was charged with manslaughter and was put on trial. The jury, apparently convinced that the man was well within his rights to blow away an intruder at night, deliberated for over three hours before acquitting the man. Two years later, however, Yoshi's parents won a civil case in the amount of $653,000 as a compensation for damage against the man who killed their son and created Yoshi's Gift Foundation for gun control groups.

Today I am attaching three important lessons on how to treat people.
My belated Happy Halloween! And ¡¦ good weekend!

-Hank-

[First Lesson: "Know the Cleaning Lady."]

During my second month of college, our professor gave us a pop quiz. I was a conscientious student and had breezed through the questions, until I read the last one: "What is the first name of the woman who cleans the school?"

Surely this was some kind of joke. I had seen the cleaning woman several times. She was tall, dark-haired and in her 50s, but how would I know her name? I handed in my paper, leaving the last question blank. Just before class ended, one student asked if the last question would count toward our quiz grade.

"Absolutely," said the professor. "In your careers, you will meet many people. All are significant. They deserve your attention and care, even if all you do is smile and say "hello."

I've never forgotten that lesson. I also learned her name was Dorothy.

[Second Lesson: "Pick Up In the Rain."]

One night, at 11:30 p.m., an older African American woman was standing on the side of an Alabama highway trying to endure a lashing rainstorm. Her car had broken down and she desperately needed a ride. Soaking wet, she decided to flag down the next car.

A young white man stopped to help her, generally unheard of in those conflict-filled 1960s. The man took her to safety, helped her get assistance and put her into a taxicab.

She seemed to be in a big hurry, but wrote down his address and thanked him. Seven days went by and a knock came on the man's door. To his surprise, a giant console color TV was delivered to his home.

A special note was attached. It read: "Thank you so much for assisting me on the highway the other night. The rain drenched not only my clothes, but also my spirits. Then you came along. Because of you, I was able to make it to my dying husband's bedside just before he passed away. God bless you for helping me and unselfishly serving others."

Sincerely,

Mrs. Nat King Cole.

[Third Lesson: "Remember Those Who Serve."]

In the days when an ice cream sundae cost much less, a 10 year-old boy entered a hotel coffee shop and sat at a table. A waitress put a glass of water in front of him. "How much is an ice cream sundae?" he asked. "50¡Ë," replied the waitress.

The little boy pulled his hand out of his pocket and studied the coins in it.

"Well, how much is a plain dish of ice cream?" he inquired. By now more people were waiting for a table and the waitress was growing impatient. "35¡Ë!" she brusquely replied.

The little boy again counted his coins. "I'll have the plain ice cream," he said. The waitress brought the ice cream, put the bill on the table and walked away. The boy finished the ice cream, paid the cashier and left.

When the waitress came back, she began to cry as she wiped down the table. There, placed neatly beside the empty dish, were two nickels and five pennies. You see, he couldn't have the sundae, because he had to have enough left to leave her a tip.
