Dear all,

Good Friday morning!

As we learned in school, Plato¡¯s idea of the spherical earth tilting on the axis well explains changes of day and seasons but it¡¯s based on the words of Pythagoras. Socrates, Plato and Aristotle, all borrowed many parts of Pythagorean works in their intellectual quest for the substance of cosmos. Pythagoras explained the order and beauty of cosmos through his concept of Harmony of the Spheres.

However, the beautiful earth, on which we have enjoyed the liberty to inhale and exhale with zero limitations, is creepingly but surely deteriorating due to uncontrolled global greenhouse gases. While we have been tied up with daily routines in this part of the world, the United Nations along with its specialized agency for health, the World Health Organization (WHO), has been brisk at the climate conference in Nairobi, Kenya.

Scientists for the past two weeks laid out their findings that a warmer world is already producing a sicker world by citing surges of such diseases as malaria, strokes, heart ailments and dengue fever in Kenya, China and Europe. They attribute the past rise in global temperatures to the accumulation in the atmosphere of carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping gases, byproducts of power plants, automobiles and other fossil fuel-burning sources. Apparently, this is a global issue that demands immediate action by the developed countries in the northern hemisphere to alleviate the disease burden on the poor countries in the south. The second meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol is set to conclude today. However, no agreement will work out without participation of the United States. President Bush rejects to the pact in fear that mandatory emissions cuts would harm the U.S. economy. Will there be a daring mouse that can bell the cat?

An intriguing item of news drawing attention from people in the east and the west is whether Ms. Segolene Royal, who is well-known for her photogenic appearance and was picked as the presidential candidate of France¡¯s Socialist Party this morning in the world of macho French politics, could become the first woman-resident at the Elysee Palace. 53-year-old Royal outvoted her competitors such as former finance minister, Dominique Strauss-Kahn, and former prime minister, Laurent Fabius.

Good information I¡¯d like to share with you today is that Italian researchers came up with a novel, fun, and more effective way to mend heart disease than running on a treadmill at the gym: waltzing. At a wedding reception in America, the bride and her father dance together in front of guests. Shall we dance? Good weekend, you all!

[Giving When It Counts]

Many years ago, when I worked as a volunteer at a hospital, I got to know a little girl named Liz who was suffering from a rare and serious disease. Her only chance of recovery appeared to be a blood transfusion from her 5-year-old brother, who had miraculously survived the same disease and had developed the antibodies needed to combat the illness. The doctor explained the situation to her little brother, and asked the little boy if he would be willing to give his blood to his sister. I saw him hesitate for only a moment before taking a deep breath and saying, ¡°Yes, I'll do it if it will save her.¡±

As the transfusion progressed, he lay in bed next to his sister and smiled, as we all did, seeing the color returning to her cheeks. Then his face grew pale and his smile faded. He looked up at the doctor and asked with a trembling voice, ¡°Will I start to die right away?¡±

Being young, the little boy had misunderstood the doctor; he thought he was going to have to give his sister all of his blood in order to save her.

[Period]

A kindergarten class had a homework assignment to find out about something exciting and relate it to the class the next day. When the time came to present what they'd found, the first little boy walked up to the front of the class, made a small white dot on the blackboard and sat back down. Puzzled, the teacher asked him just what it was.

"It¡¯s a period," said the little boy.

"Well, I can see that," she said, ¡°but what is so exciting about a period?¡±

¡°Damned if I know,¡±said the little boy, ¡°but this morning my sister was missing one, Daddy had a heart attack, Mommy fainted, and the man next door shot himself.¡±
