Good afternoon!

On the heels of post-Thanksgiving bargain shopping, holiday spirits and Christmas carols were present around the clock during my stay in the States for the past two weeks. Businesses in Manhattan, New York, as well as on Newbury Street in Back Bay of Boston, appeared to be fairly brisk with shopping sprees.

As the holidays have rolled around, Americans have gone into an outdoor decorating frenzy. A Bostonian, who grew up watching every house in his neighborhood setup with dramatic, elaborate Christmas displays to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, drew local media attention to his 10-bedroom, 11-chimney, 8,500-square-foot house by covering it with nearly 200,000 Christmas lights.

He ended up spending about $12,000 in total, to install a giant Santa Claus on the roof, trees made solely of light strings, and lights on every crevice of the exterior of the house. Consequently, one of his neighbors has experienced trouble sleeping but her two year-old daughter thinks that’s where Santa Claus lives.


The man, who has eight children, 16 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren, did install each light for one reason. It’s all for the kids. Christmas is for kids. This truly is the most wonderful time of the year. Holiday decoration simply brings out the joy of the season and the joy on the faces of children.

All local TV channels aired the Cinderella story of Tony Romo, a Mexican-American quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys. Tony was in the limelight as an overnight sensation after he treated the national audience with the Cowboys’record-tying five touchdown passes on Thanksgiving.

Tony has thus far won five of his seven starts, taking the Cowboys to a one-game lead in the division from 3-3. He spent the first three and a half years of his career on the bench after joining the Cowboys as a free agent because he wasn’t even drafted after playing at Eastern Illinois.

Since Troy Aikman resurrected the Cowboys in the 1990s, the Cowboys fans needed someone to do it again and Tony became the one, like a diamond in the rough. This too-good-to-be-true story has produced unbridled Romo mania. Tony’s father, at a TV interview, said his weaving a Cinderella story is like “hitting the lotto.” It is his tenacity that made him rise to stardom like the good old saying, “Good things come to those who wait.”

The low temperatures below zero and wind chill have unconsciously crept upon us. Be sure to wear a hat since most body heat is lost through the top of the head. Also, cover your mouth with scarves to protect lungs from directly inhaling extremely cold air.

A mother was preparing pancakes for her sons, Kevin, 5, and Ryan, 3. The boys began to argue over who would get the first pancake. Their mother saw the opportunity for a moral lesson. If Jesus were sitting here, He would say, “Let my brother have the first pancake. I can wait.” Kevin turned to his younger brother and said, “Ryan, you be Jesus.”

크리스마스가 다가오면서 미국인들은 집 단장에 빠져 있었습니다. 예수 그리스도의 탄생을 축하하기 위해 동네 집집마다 인상적이고 정성이 든 크리스마스 장식물들로 꾸며진 것을 보고 자란 한 보스턴 주민은 약 20만개의 크리스마스 전등불로 뒤덮인 10개 침실과 11개 굴뚝 및 8500 스퀘어 피트인 자신의 집으로 미국 매스컴의 주목을 받았습니다.

그 사람은 거대한 싼타 클로스를 지붕에 설치하고 전등불만으로 만든 크리스마스 트리와 집 외부 이음새마다 전등불을 설치하는 데에 결국 총 1만2000달러 가량을 썼습니다. 따라서, 그 사람의 옆집 아주머니는 (불빛으로) 잠을 들기가 어려웠지만 아주머니의 두 살배기 딸은 거기가 싼타 클로스가 사는 데로 생각하고 있습니다.

모든 미국 티브이 방송은 (미식축구팀) 달라스 카우보이즈의 멕시코계 미국인인 쿼터백 토니 로모의 신데렐라같은 얘기를 방송했습니다. 추석날 카우보이즈의 기록과 타이를 이룬 다섯 개의 터치다운으로 전국의 티브이 시청자를 즐겁게 한 후로 토니는 하룻밤새 화제의 주인공으로 세상의 주목을 받았습니다.

지금까지 토니는 7게임에 출장해 5게임을 승리함으로써 3승 3패의 카우보이즈를 한 게임차의 디비전 수위로 끌어 올렸습니다. 그는 이스턴 일리노이대학에서 선수로 뛴 후 프로선수로 지명 조차 되지 못 한 탓에 프리 에이전트로 카우보이즈에 입단한 후 3년반 동안 후보선수로 지냈습니다.
