I am wondering if you may know that many women love abalone. If you have quarreled over small stuff with your girlfriend or wife, make a reservation and treat her to it. Both of you will probably head back with big smiles on your faces.


An Australian 41-year-old abalone diver was rescued by his son and other divers after being partially swallowed by a 3 meter (10 foot) shark, the Great White, the most feared of sharks last Tuesday. The water was so dirty that he couldn’t see the shark coming but could feel the bite and knew he was in the mouth of the shark, according to a news account. His fellow divers could see the shark bite him around the head first, crushing his face mask and breaking his nose. However, he was finally able to escape the attack by POKING the shark in its eye.


Ironically, sharks, including the Great Whites, are protected in Australia and New Zealand. Soon in New Zealand you will be fined up to $172,000 and six months in prison if you harm the fish. According to those countries, you should just die if you are bitten by the predator instead of trying to escape from it. So, bear in mind that you should not dive into the water in Australia or New Zealand. Further, conservationists rally to support sharks. FYI, San Francisco-based conservation group WildAid was able to persuade the Chinese-born NBA star Yao Ming of Utah Jazz to publicly disavow shark-fin soup. Hence, refrain from placing an order of shark-fin soup in the western countries such as Australia, New Zealand and the U.S.A.

Some years ago on a hot summer day in south Florida a little boy decided to go for a swim in the old swimming hole behind his house. In a hurry to dive into the cool water, he ran out the back door, leaving behind shoes, socks, and shirt as he went.


He flew into the water, not realizing that as he swam toward the middle of the lake, an alligator was swimming toward the shore. His mother in the house was looking out the window saw the two as they got closer and closer together. In utter fear, she ran toward the water, yelling to her son as loudly as she could. Hearing her voice, the little boy became alarmed and made a U-turn to swim to his mother. It was too late. Just as he reached her, the alligator reached him. From the dock, the mother grabbed her little boy by the arms just as the alligator snatched his legs. That began an incredible tug-of-war between the two. The alligator was much stronger than the mother, but the mother was much too passionate to let go. A farmer happened to drive by, heard her screams, raced from his truck, took aim and shot the alligator.


Remarkably, after weeks and weeks in the hospital, the little boy survived. His legs were extremely scarred by the vicious attack of the animal. And, on his arms, were deep scratches where his mother's fingernails dug into his flesh in her effort to hang on to the son she loved.


The newspaper reporter, who interviewed the boy after the trauma, asked if he would show him his scars. The boy lifted his pant legs. And then, with obvious pride, he said to the reporter, "But look at my arms. I have great scars on my arms, too. I have them because my Mom wouldn't let go."


We have scars, too. Not from an alligator, but the scars of a painful past. Some of those scars are unsightly and have caused us deep regret. But, some wounds are because God has refused to let go. In the midst of our struggle He's been there holding on to us.


Never judge another person's scars, because we don't know how they were made.

소년은 호수 가운데로 헤엄을 치는 동안 악어 한 마리가 호숫가를 향해 가고 있는 것을 눈치 채지 못 했습니다. 집안에서 창 밖을 내다 보고 있던 소년의 어머니는 서로 점점 더 가까워 지고 있는 둘을 봤습니다. 완전히 공포에 질린 소년의 어머니는 호수를 향해 달려 가며 소년을 향해 목청껏 고함을 질렀습니다. 어머니의 목소리를 듣고서 소년은 깜짝 놀라 어머니 쪽으로 헤엄을 치려고 유 턴을 했습니다. 그것은 너무 늦었습니다. 소년의 손이 어머니 손에 막 닿으려는 순간 악어가 소년을 잡았습니다. 막 악어가 소년의 발을 물었을 때 소년의 어머니는 호숫가 도크로부터 자기 아들의 팔을 붙잡았습니다. 그게 소년의 어머니와 악어 간에 믿기 어려운 끌어당기기의 시작이었습니다. 악어가 소년의 어머니 보다 훨씬 힘이 셌지만, 소년의 어머니는 너무 열심이었던 지라 소년을 놓아 줄 수 없었습니다. 마침 농부 한 사람이 부근을 지나가다 소년 어머니가 지르는 고함 소리를 듣고는 트럭에서 내려서 달려가 총을 겨누고는 악어에게 총을 쏘았습니다.

중상으로부터 회복한 소년을 인터뷰한 신문 기자가 소년에게 상처를 보여주겠느냐고 물었습니다. 소년은 바지를 들어 올렸습니다. 그리고 소년은 아주 자랑스러운 듯이 기자에게 말했습니다. “허지만, 제 팔을 보셔요. 제 팔에도 커다란 흉터가 있어요. 이건 우리 어머니가 날 놓지 않으려고 하시다가 생긴 거에요.”


우리 역시 흉터가 있습니다. 악어로부터가 아니라 가슴 아픈 과거로부터의 흉터지요. 그 중 어떤 것들은 보기에 흉하고 우리로 하여금 깊은 후회를 하도록 했습니다. 그러나, 어떤 상처는 신께서 우리를 놓아 버리기를 거부하신 때문입니다. 우리가 몸부림치는 동안 신은 우리를 놓아 버리지 않고 거기에 죽 계셨던 것입니다.


다른 사람의 흉터가 어떻게 생긴 것인지 모르면서 그것에 대해 절대로 판단을 내리지 맙시다.
