This year the wintry chill seemed to have evaporated shortly after its arrival due to global warming which has already become part of the everyday lexicon.

Even though some say the seasonal spring is already around us this year, we may feel that winter is still lingering in our heart until a dark cloud shrouding over Northeast Asia is lifted. Am I talking about North Korea’s nuclear weapon? Hmmm.

Last week, two Korean former sexual slaves- grandmas Lee Yong-soo and Kim Gun-ja, along with a Dutch victim of the same atrocity, grandma Jan Ruff-O’Herne - testified before the U.S. Congress subcommittee on the Asia Pacific in a hearing on “comfort women.” The Japanese government uses this euphemism in referring to such devastated women both mentally and physically.

To everyone’s surprise most such women suffered gang rape, forced abortions, hunger and sexual violence at their age between 15 and 18 mostly in icy cold Manchuria or an unknown Southern Pacific island until the World War II ended in a defeat of Japan. On a weekday about ten to twenty Japanese soldiers treaded their body and on a weekend more than thirty mounted them even during menstruation, according to their testimony. What the heck!


It’s short odds that the resolution is passed at the Congress thanks to the three-person commitment to the dignity of man, freedom, democracy and fundamental justice despite the Japanese government’s all-out effort to stop it by hiring Mr. Tom Foley, former House Speaker, as a lobbyist. They are Rep. Nancy Pelosi, the new House Speaker, Ms. Soh Ok-ja, President of the Washington Coalition for Comfort Women, and Rep. Michael Honda, a Japanese-American democrat from California.

In particular, Rep. Honda took the lead in this effort, based on his own belief and unforgettable and similar personal experience. For your knowledge, Rep. Honda lived in a concentration camp during World War II pursuant to the U.S. government’s decision to relocate Japanese-Americans and such inhumane experience made him a human rights activist. Let me quote the following statement he made related to this resolution:

“… Today, I am introducing a resolution which calls on Japan to formally and unambiguously apologize and acknowledge the tragedy which the comfort women endured under its Imperial Army during World War II. Not only should Japan’s Prime Minister issue a public apology, Japan must take responsibility unequivocally.

…Further, the Japanese government continues to seek to downplay the comfort women system in its textbooks. We must ask ourselves, if Japan has truly come to terms with its past in acknowledging what its Imperial Army forced upon these women, why are they suppressing the knowledge of this through education? Education on this tragedy is important to ensure that future violence against women, especially in conflicts, should not be tolerated or repeated. Textbook suppression, coupled with efforts to revise Secretary Kono’s 1993 statement, is disheartening and indicates that Japan wavers in its apology to these women.

…The purpose of this resolution is not to bash or humiliate Japan. This is about achieving justice for the few remaining women who survived this atrocity. We must recognize this grave human rights violation, which has remained unknown for so many years. …”

Given that Rep. Honda is a Japanese descent, his deed is quite heroic. May God bless Rep. Honda!

[The Fence]

There once was a little boy who had a bad temper. His father gave him a bag of nails and told him that every time he lost his temper, he must hammer a nail into the back of the fence.

The first day the boy had driven six nails into the fence. Over the next few weeks, as he learned to control his anger, the number of nails hammered daily gradually dwindled. He discovered it was easier to hold his temper than to drive those nails into the fence.

Finally the day came when the boy didn’t lose his temper at all. He told his father about it and the father suggested that the boy now pull out one nail for each day that he was able to hold his temper.

The days passed and the young boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails were gone.

The father took his son by the hand and led him to the fence. He said, “You have done well, my son, but look at the holes in the fence. The fence will never be the same. When you say things in anger, they leave a scar just like this one. You can put a knife in a man and draw it out. It won’t matter how many times you say I’m sorry, the wound is still there. A verbal wound is as bad as a physical one.”

[Mr. Brown’s Daughter]

A certain little girl, when asked her name, would reply, “I’m Mr. Brown’s daughter.”
Her mother told her this was inappropriate, and that she should say, “I am Jane Brown.”

When the Vicar spoke to her in Sunday school, and said, “Aren’t you Mr. Brown’s daughter?”

She replied, “I thought I was, but my mother says I’m not.”

여러분, 안녕하십니까?

이미 상투어가 되어 버린 지구 온난화 탓에 금년 겨울 추위는 오자 마자 사라져 버린 것 같습니다. 혹자는 계절적으로 봄은 이미 왔다고 말할지 모르지만, 동북 아시아에 드리운 검은 구름이 걷힐 때까지 겨울이 우리들 마음 속에 머무르고 있다고 느낄 것입니다. 지금 북한 핵무기 얘기를 하고 있냐고요? 글쎄요.

지난 주 한국인 종군 위안부였던 이용수 할머니와 김군자 할머니는 같은 만행의 희생자인 네덜런드인 얀 러프 오헌 할머니와 함께 미 하원 아시아 태평양 소위원회의 ‘종군 위안부’ 청문회에서 증언을 했습니다. 일본 정부는 정신적, 육체적으로 유린받은 그러한 여성을 일컬을 때 ‘위안부’라는 완곡어법을 사용하고 있습니다.

놀랍게도 대부분의 종군 위안부들은 15세에서 18세 사이의 나이에 얼음같이 추운 만주 혹은 이름 모를 남태평양의 섬에서 일본이 패배한 제2차 세계대전이 끝날 때까지 윤간과 강제 낙태, 굶주림 및 성폭력의 고통을 받았습니다. 그들의 증언에 의하면, 평일에는 약 10명 내지 20명의 일본군인들이 그들의 몸을 짓밟았고, 주말에는 30명 이상의 군인들이 심지어 월경기간 중에도 그들을 유린했습니다. 지옥에나 갈 짓이지요!

탐 폴리 전 하원의장을 로비스트로 고용하는 등 일본 정부의 총력 저지 노력에도 불구하고 인간 존엄성과 자유, 민주주의 및 근본적 정의에 대한 세 사람의 헌신적 열의 덕분에 (일본의 공식 사과를 요구하는) 결의안은 의회를 통과할 것 같습니다. 그 세 사람이란 낸씨 펠로씨 신임 하원의장과 서옥자 워싱턴 종군 위안부 연대 의장, 그리고 캘리포니아주 출신의 일본계 민주당원인 마이클 혼다 의원입니다.

특히, 혼다 의원은 자신의 신념과 잊지 못할 비슷한 개인적 경험을 바탕으로 결의안의 통과 노력에 앞장서고 있습니다. 참고로, 혼다 의원은 제2차 세계대전 기간 중 일본계 미국인들을 격리시킨다는 미국 정부의 결정에 따라 강제 수용소에서 지냈으며, 그와 같은 비인도적 경험으로 인해 인권주의자가 되었습니다. 본 결의안과 관련하여 그가 발표한 다음 성명을 여러분께 소개해 드리고자 합니다.

“… 오늘 저는 일본이 공식적으로 그리고 분명하게 제2차 세계대전 중 일본 제국 군대 치하에서 종군 위안부들이 견뎌내야 했던 비극적 사건에 대하여 그 잘못을 인정하고 사과를 하도록 요구하는 결의안을 제안하고자 합니다. (이 문제에 대하여는) 일본 수상이 공식 사과를 해야 할 뿐 아니라 일본은 분명하게 책임을 져야만 합니다.

… 더욱이, 일본 정부는 교과서에서 종군 위안부 문제를 축소시키려는 노력을 계속하고 있습니다. 만약 일본 제국 군대가 이들 종군 위안부들에게 강요했던 바를 시인함에 있어서 일본이 진실로 과거의 잘못을 인정한다면, 왜 그들이 교육을 통해 이러한 지식을 은폐하려는지 우리는 자문해봐야만 할 것입니다. 이 비극적 사건에 대한 교육은 여성에 대한 미래의 폭력 특히 전시 폭력이 용납되거나 반복되지 않도록 보장하기 위하여 중요합니다. 코노 관방성 장관이 했던 1993년의 사과 성명을 바꾸려는 노력과 더불어 교과서 날조는 개탄스러우며, 이것은 이들 종군 위안부에 대한 사과에 있어서 일본(의 입장)이 흔들린다는 점을 나타냅니다.

… 본 결의안의 목적은 일본을 매도하거나 망신을 주려는 데에 있지 않습니다. 본 결의안은 이러한 잔혹행위에서 살아남은 몇 안 되는 생존 종군 위안부들을 위한 정의를 찾으려는 데에 있습니다. 우리는 이러한 엄청난 인권 침해 행위가 그토록 오랫동안 알려지지 않았던 점을 인식해야만 하겠습니다. ….”

혼다 의원이 일본계라는 점을 감안할 때 그의 행위는 정말로 영웅적입니다. 혼다 의원에게 신의 축복이 있기를!

[담장]

화를 잘 내는 꼬마 소년이 있었습니다. 소년의 아버지는 소년에게 한 주머니의 못을 주시며 화를 낼 때마다 못 한 개를 담장에 망치질 하라고 했습니다.

첫째 날 소년은 여섯 개의 못을 담장에 박았습니다. 그 후로 몇 주 동안 소년은 화를 다스릴 줄 알게 되면서 매일 망치질하는 못의 수가 점점 줄어 들었습니다. 소년은 담장에 못질하는 것보다 화를 참는 것이 더 쉽다는 걸 알았습니다.

마침내 소년이 전혀 화를 내지 않는 날이 왔습니다. 소년은 아버지에게 그 얘길 하였고, 아버지는 소년에게 이번에는 화를 참을 수 있었던 날에 못 한 개를 뽑으라고 시켰습니다.

날이 지나고 어린 소년은 마침내 아버지에게 못을 모두 뽑았노라고 말할 수 있었습니다.

아버지는 소년의 손을 잡고 소년을 담장으로 데려갔습니다. 아버지가 말씀하셨습니다. “얘야, 잘 했구나. 하지만, 담장에 있는 구멍들을 보거라. 담장은 결코 예전과 같을 수 없단다. 네가 화가 나서 말하면, 이처럼 상처를 남기게 된단다. 넌 칼로 사람을 찌르고 나서 그걸 빼낼 수 있겠지. 네가 미안하다고 몇 번을 말하건 그것은 상관이 없지만, 그 상처는 여전히 거기에 남게 되는 거야. 말로 인한 (정신적) 상처는 신체적 상처와 마찬가지로 나쁘단다.”

[브라운씨의 딸]

이름을 물으면 “전 브라운씨 딸이에요.”하고 대답하는 어떤 꼬마 소녀가 있었습니다. 소녀의 어머니가 소녀에게 그렇게 대답하는 것은 틀렸고, “전 제인 브라운이에요.”라고 대답하라고 가르쳤습니다.

주일 학교에서 목사님이 소녀에게 말을 걸며 물었습니다. “너 브라운씨 딸 아니니?”
소녀는 대답했습니다. “저도 그런 줄 알았어요. 그런데, 우리 엄마가 그렇지 않다고 말했어요.”
