Good Friday morning!


Last Friday our entire nation was quite wet due to a full day-long rainfall which fell after its long absence. Many people considered the rainfall as God’s condolence to Sgt. Yoon Jang-ho, whose body had just arrived in Seoul after he was killed in a suicide bombing in Afghanistan. It is truly mournful that Sgt. Yoon came back to Korea to complete the mandatory army service after having been schooled in Indiana from junior high to college for over 10 years and had less than two months to go before redeploying to Korea. May Sgt. Yoon rest in peace!


His mother was understandably distraught over the tragedy suddenly inflicted on her and so was his father, although he just stood sobbing instead of wailing. A flood of tears must have formed a river down in his heart.


Also last week, TV news report depicted Toby Dawson, a bronze medalist in the 2006 Winter Olympics, hugging his Korean biological father, Mr. Kim Jae-soo, in Seoul. He was adopted by an American ski instructor in Colorado since he was lost in a local market by his mother in Pusan at the age of three. Upon seeing his father he first asked why Mr. Kim hadn’t tried to locate him further. Mr. Kim, while shedding tears, couldn’t say anything more to him than “I am sorry. I am sorry.”



This inquiry reminds me of a scene in the recently-released movie Rocky Balboa, where Rocky said to Robert, his son, who struggles to identify his own self, not as Balboa, Jr., but appears to be a loser in the eyes of movie-viewers, as follows: “I am always gonna love you no matter what. No matter what happens, you’re my son and you’re my blood. You’re the best thing in my life.”


… And, I’d like Toby to read the following story. While mothers cry over a tragedy, fathers just stand with his eyes closed … outside… but weep bitter tears inside.

[The Father’s Gift]


A young man was getting ready to graduate from college. For many months he had admired a beautiful sports car in a dealer's showroom, and knowing his father could well afford it, he told him that was all he wanted.


As Graduation Day approached, the young man awaited signs that his father had purchased the car. Finally, on the morning of his graduation, his father called him into his private study. His father told him how proud he was to have such a fine son, and told him how much he loved him. He handed his son a beautifully wrapped gift box.


Curious, and somewhat disappointed, the young man opened the box and found a lovely, leather-bound Bible, with the young man’s name embossed in gold. Angry, he rose his voice to his father and said, “with all your money, you give me a Bible?”and stormed out of the house.


Many years passed and the young man was very successful in business. He had a beautiful home and wonderful family, but realized his father very old, and thought perhaps he should go to him. He had not seen him since that graduation day.


Before he could make arrangements, he received a telegram telling him his father had passed away, and willed all of his possessions to his son. He needed to come home immediately and take care of things.


When he arrived at his father’s house, sudden sadness and regret filled his heart. He began to search through his father’s important papers and saw the still gift-wrapped Bible, just as he had left it years ago. With tears, he opened the Bible and began to turn the pages. His father had carefully underlined a verse, Matt. 7:11, “And if you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in Heaven give good things to those who ask Him?”


As he read those words, a car key dropped from the back of the Bible. It had a tag with the dealer’s name, the same dealer who had the sports car he had desired. On the tag was the date of his graduation, and the words PAID IN FULL.


[JURY EXEMPTION]


Just as she was celebrating her 80th birthday, our friend received a jury-duty notice. She called to remind the people at the clerk's office that she was exempt because of her age.


"You need to come in and fill out the exemption forms," they said.


"I've already done that," she replied. "I did it last year."


"You have to do it every year," she was told.


"Why?" came the response. "Do you think I'm going to get younger?"



아버지의 눈물



여러분, 안녕하십니까?


지난 주 금요일 오랜만에 하루 종일 내린 비로 전국이 흠뻑 젖었습니다. 많은 사람들은 아프가니스탄에서 자살 폭탄테러로 사망한 윤장호 하사의 시신이 서울에 도착하자 내린 이 비를 윤장호 하사에 대한 신의 애도의 표시로 봤습니다. 윤하사는 중학교부터 대학교까지 10년 이상을 인디아나주에서 학교를 다니다 국방의무를 완수하기 위해 한국에 돌아왔으며, 한국으로 재배치 되기 불과 2달을 남겨놓지 않았다는 사실은 참으로 우리를 안타깝게 합니다. 윤하사여, 부디 편히 잠드소서!


당연히 윤하사의 어머니는 갑자기 닥쳐온 비극에 망연자실했으며, 비록 통곡 대신 그저 눈물만 흘리고 있기는 했지만, 그의 아버지도 망연자실하기는 마찬가지였습니다. 윤하사 아버지의 가슴 속에서는 쏟아지는 눈물이 분명히 강을 이루었을 것입니다.


또한, 지난 주 티브이 뉴스는 2006년 동계 올림픽 동메달리스트 토비 도슨이 서울에서 그의 생부 김재수씨를 포옹하는 장면을 보여줬습니다. 3살 때 어머니가 부산의 한 시장에서 그를 잃어버린 후, 그는 콜로라도에 사는 미국인 스키 강사에게 입양되었습니다. 아버지를 만나자 그는 맨 먼저 왜 자신을 더 찾아보지 않았느냐고 물었습니다. 그의 아버지는 눈물을 흘리며 그저 “미안하다. 미안하다.”고만 말했습니다.


토비 도슨의 질문은 최근 개봉된 영화 ‘록키 발보아’에서 록키의 아들 로버트가 록키의 아들로써가 아닌 자기 자신의 자아를 찾으려 애를 쓰지만 영화 관객의 눈에는 실패자로 보이는 데, 그런 아들에게 록키가 다음과 같이 말하는 장면을 생각나게 해줍니다. “무슨 일이 있어도 난 항상 널 사랑해. 무슨 일이 있어도 넌 내 아들이고, 내 핏줄이야. 넌 내 인생 최고의 작품이야.”


… 그리고, 저는 토비가 다음 이야기를 읽어 보았으면 합니다. 어머니들이 슬픈 일로 울부짖고 있을 때 겉으로 보기에 아버지들은 그저 두 눈을 감고 서 있는 것 같지만, 속으로는 통곡을 하고 있답니다.

[아버지의 선물]


한 젊은이가 곧 대학을 졸업할 예정이었습니다. 그는 여러 달 동안 한 자동차 딜러의 전시실에 있는 아름다운 스포츠카에 탄복을 하고 있었고, 아버지가 그 차를 사줄 형편이 되는 줄 아는 그는 아버지에게 그가 원하는 건 그 차뿐이라고 말씀 드렸습니다.


졸업식이 가까워지자 그 젊은이는 아버지가 그 차를 사셨다는 표시를 기다렸습니다. 드디어, 졸업식 날 아침 아버지는 그를 서재로 부르셨습니다. 아버지는 그에게 훌륭한 아들을 두어 정말 자랑스럽다고 말씀하셨고, 아들을 정말 사랑한다고 말하셨습니다. 그리고 아버지는 그에게 아름답게 포장을 한 선물 상자를 하나 건네 주셨습니다.


젊은이는 약간 실망 했으나 호기심으로 그 상자를 열어 보았고, 거기에는 자신의 이름이 금으로 새겨있고 아름다운 가죽으로 제본된 성경이 있었습니다. 화가 난 그는 아버지에게 목청을 돋구어 “아버지는 그 많은 돈으로 제게 겨우 성경을 사주십니까?” 하고 말하고는 집을 뛰쳐나갔습니다.


여러 해가 지나고 그 젊은이는 사업에서 큰 성공을 거두었습니다. 멋진 집과 사랑하는 가족이 있었지만, 아버지가 매우 늙으셨리라고 깨달은 그는 아버지를 만나러 가야겠다고 생각했습니다. 졸업식 날 이후로 그는 아버지를 보지 않았습니다.


아버지를 찾아갈 약속을 하기도 전에, 아버지가 전 재산을 자신에게 준다는 유언을 남기고 돌아가셨다는 소식을 전보로 받았습니다. 그는 즉시 아버지 댁으로 가서 남은 일들을 정리해야 할 필요가 있었습니다.


아버지 댁에 도착하자 슬픔과 후회의 감정이 갑자기 그의 가슴을 메웠습니다. 그는 아버지의 중요 서류들을 정리하기 시작했고, 그가 몇 년 전에 내버리고 간 상태 그대로 선물포장이 된 성경을 봤습니다. 그는 눈물을 흘리며 성경을 펼쳐 들고 페이지를 넘기기 시작했습니다. 그의 아버지는 마태복음 7장 11절의 구절에 조심스럽게 밑줄을 그어 두셨습니다. “그리고, 너희가 악한 자 일지라도 너희 자식들에게 좋은 선물을 줄 지를 알거든, 하물며 하늘에 계신 너희 아버지께서 아버지께 구하는 자에게 좋은 것을 주시지 않겠느냐?”


그가 그 구절을 읽고 있는 데, 그 성경책 뒤쪽에서 자동차 키 하나가 떨어졌습니다. 그 자동차 키에는 그가 갖고 싶어 했던 스포츠 카 딜러의 이름이 새겨진 태그가 달려 있었습니다. 그 태그의 날짜는 그의 졸업일이었고, “완불”이란 글이 적혀 있었습니다.



[배심원 면제]


우리 친구가 80번째 생일을 축하하고 있는 바로 그 때, 그녀는 배심원 출석 통지서를 받았습니다. 친구는 법원 서기 사무실에 근무하는 사람들에게 자기는 나이가 많아 면제된다는 것을 알려주려고 전화를 했습니다.


“할머니, 여기 오셔서 면제 신청서를 적으셔야 합니다.”하고 그들이 말했습니다.


“벌써 했어요.” 그녀는 대답을 했습니다. “작년에 했어요.”


그녀는 “할머니, 매년 면제 신청서를 적어 내셔야 합니다.”하는 말을 들었습니다.


“그래요?” 그녀는 대답했습니다. “내가 매년 젊어지기라도 하오?”
