Good Friday morning!


People may no longer want to bring up the tragic carnage that occurred at Virginia Tech last week. Many Asian-Americans with Korean appearance have spent a considerable amount of time in constant fear of misplaced rage against them simply because the deranged murderer was a Korean-born American.

Such follies could be observed, although not abundant. Finally, USA Today respectfully carried an editorial criticizing such emotion-laden irrationalities under the title, “Madman, not Koreans, to blame for shootings.”

According to a news account, a US Army sergeant based at Bagram military base north of Kabul, Afghanistan lamented that the flags were flown at half-staff for the innocent victims at V-Tech, while they have never been lowered for the fallen U.S. troops in Afghanistan and Iraq.


Another piece of news: the father of one victim, Reema Samaha, 18, offered condolences to the killer’s family, “which has also lost a son,” and interestingly Samaha means forgiveness.

Before V-Tech and before Columbine, there was another school shooting, which ended up killing three and wounding five, at Heath High School in Paducah, Kentucky in 1997. On the morning of December 1st, a 14-year-old outcast, who had been bullied for his small frame and clownish behavior, started shooting at his friends, including his close friend, Jenkins Smith.

It is now her purpose in life to speak to school students about preventing the kind of violence that changed her life. Since the tragedy, she has been confined to move in a wheelchair. She says, however, “I need to warn people about the importance of treating others the way you would want to be treated.”

These are tidbits worth remembering from the incredible incident. We should not avoid this tragedy but rather face the music. We can then move forward both in our personal life and workplace.

I would like to, therefore, note a recent Wharton research suggestion that positive people tend to do better in the workplace. When we are in a positive mood, we are more open to taking in information and handling it effectively. A culture of love or a positive corporate culture results in higher productivity due to emotional contagion. More notably, the study advises vis-a-vis the use of e-mail as follows:

“If something is important, and you know that the emotional context is going to be an issue, then pick up the phone; don’t just rely on e-mails. And even the phone may not be good enough. Sometimes, if it is really important, you just have to fly to where they are and meet them face-to-face to get the message across.”

[The Rose Within]

A certain man planted a rose and watered it faithfully and before it blossomed, he examined it.

He saw the bud that would soon blossom, but noticed thorns upon the stem and he thought, "How can any beautiful flower come from a plant burdened with so many sharp thorns? Saddened by this thought, he neglected to water the rose, and just before it was ready to bloom... it died.

So it is with many people. Within every soul there is a rose. The God-like qualities planted in us at birth, grow amid the thorns of our faults. Many of us look at ourselves and see only the thorns, the defects.

We despair, thinking that nothing good can possibly come from us. We neglect to water the good within us, and eventually it dies. We never realize our potential.

Some people do not see the rose within themselves; someone else must show it to them. One of the greatest gifts a person can possess is to be able to reach past the thorns of others, and find the rose within them.

This is one of the characteristics of love... to look at a person, know the person’s true faults and accepting that person into your life... all the while recognizing the nobility in the person’s soul. Help others to realize they can overcome their faults. If we show them the "rose" within themselves, they will conquer their thorns. Only then will they blossom many times over.

[Be Positive]

A husband and a wife are getting ready for bed. The wife is standing in front of a full-length mirror taking a hard look at herself.

“You know, dear,” she says, “I look in the mirror, and I see an old woman. My face is all wrinkled, my hair is grey, my shoulders are hunched over, I’ve got fat legs, and my arms are all flabby.” She turns to her husband and says, “Tell me something positive to make me feel better about myself.”

He studies hard for a moment thinking about it and then says in a soft, thoughtful voice, “Well, there’s nothing wrong with your eyesight.”

Services for the husband will be held Saturday morning at 10:30 at St. Anselm’s Memorial Chapel.

더 이상 지난 주 버지니아 공대에서 일어났던 비극적인 대량 살인 사건을 꺼내고 싶어 하는 사람은 없을 것입니다. 그 정신 나간 살인자가 단지 한국 출신 미국인이었다는 이유 때문에 한국인 모습을 한 많은 아시아계 미국인들은 상당한 시간을 (미국인들의) 분노가 자신들에게 잘못 미칠지 모른다는 두려움에 떨어야 했습니다.

비록 아주 많지는 않았지만 그런 바보 같은 일들은 목격되었고, 감사하게도 USA Today 신문은 마침내 “대량 총기 살인사건의 책임은 한국인들이 아니라 미친 녀석 한 명에게”라는 제목으로 그런 감정이 담긴 비이성적 행위를 비난하는 사설을 실었습니다.

한 뉴스 기사에 따르면, 아프가니스탄 수도 카불 북쪽 바그람 미군 기지에 근무하는 한 미육군 상사는 아프가니스탄과 이라크에서 전사한 미국 군인들에 대해서는 한 번도 조기를 게양하지 않으면서 죄 없는 버지니아 공대 사건 희생자들을 위해서는 조기를 게양한 점에 대하여 개탄했답니다.

다른 뉴스 하나. 희생자 중 한 명인 18세의 리마 사마하의 부친은 “(자신과) 마찬가지로 아들을 잃어 버린” 살인자의 가족에게 조의를 표했으며, 흥미롭게도 사마하란 이름은 용서를 의미한답니다.

버지니아 공대 사건과 컬럼바인 고등학교 사건 이전인 1997년 켄터키주 패더카의 히스 고교에서 3명이 사망하고 5명이 부상당하는 다른 학교내 총기 사건이 있었습니다. 12월 1일 아침 작은 체격과 어릿광대 같은 행동으로 놀림을 받아 온 14세의 왕따 소년은 친한 친구 젠킨스 스미스양 등 친구들에게 총격을 가했습니다.

이제 그녀의 삶의 목적은 그녀의 인생을 바꿔버린 그런 총기 사건 예방에 관해 학생들과 얘기하는 것입니다. 그 비극적 사건 이후로 그녀는 휠체어를 타고 움직여야만 합니다. 그러나, 그녀는 “저는 사람들에게 남이 자신을 대해주기를 바라는 대로 남을 대하는 것이 얼마나 중요한지 주의를 주고자 합니다.”하고 말하고 있습니다.

이상은 믿기지 않는 사건에서 나온 기억해둘 만한 뒷이야기들입니다. 우리는 이 같은 비극을 외면해서는 안 되며, 오히려 그 결과를 받아들여야만 하겠습니다. 그 때 비로소 우리는 개인적 삶과 직장 모두에서 앞으로 나아 갈 수 있습니다.

그러므로, 저는 긍정적 사고를 가진 사람들이 직장에서 일을 더 잘 한다는 최근 와튼 스쿨의 조사 결과에 주목하고자 합니다. 긍정적 기분일 때, 우리는 정보의 수용 및 그 효과적 처리를 하기가 더 쉽습니다. 사랑의 문화 곧 긍정적 기업 문화는 감정의 전염성 때문에 생산성이 더 높아진답니다. 보다 주목할 점은 전자 메일의 사용에 관한 다음과 같은 와튼 스쿨의 조사 결과에 따른 조언입니다.

“만약 어떤 일이 중요한 일이고, 감정적 상황이 이슈가 될 경우에는 전화를 사용하세요. 단순히 전자 메일을 사용하지는 마세요. 심지어 전화도 충분하지 않을 경우가 있습니다. 정말로 중요한 일인 경우에는, 상대방이 있는 곳으로 달려가 직접 얼굴을 맞대고 메시지를 분명히 해야만 합니다.”

[우리들 속의 장미]

어떤 사람이 장미 한 송이를 심고선 착실하게 물을 주고 장미꽃이 피기 전에 그것을 살펴봤습니다.

그는 곧 피어날 봉오리를 봤지만, 장미 줄기에 가시들이 붙어 있는 것을 알아챘습니다. “이렇게 날카로운 가시들이 많이 달라붙은 식물에서 어떻게 아름다운 꽃이 피어날까?” 이러한 생각으로 슬픔에 잠긴 그는 장미에 물을 주는 것을 소홀히 하고 말았으며, 꽃이 막 피어나기 전에 장미는 죽고 말았습니다.

사람들도 마찬가지입니다. 모든 사람 속에는 장미 한 송이가 있습니다. 태어날 때 심어진 신 같은 속성은 결점이라는 가시들 가운데서 자라납니다. 많은 사람들은 스스로를 바라보며 단지 결점 즉, 가시들만을 봅니다.

아무리 해도 우리들에게 좋은 일은 생길 것 같지 않다고 생각하며 우리는 절망합니다. 우리는 우리 속에 있는 장점에 물을 주는 것을 게을리 하고, 마침내 그 장점은 죽어 버립니다. 우리는 자신의 가능성을 깨닫지 못하고 만 것입니다.

사람들 가운데에는 자신 속에 있는 장미를 보지 못 하는 사람들이 있습니다. 다른 사람이 그들에게 그것을 보여줘야만 합니다. 사람이 가지고 있는 위대한 재능 중에는 다른 사람의 가시를 건드리지 않고 그 사람들 속에 있는 장미를 찾아내는 것이 있습니다.

이것은 사랑의 특징 가운데 하나입니다. 어떤 사람을 보고, 그 사람의 진정한 결점들이 무엇인지 알아 내며, 그 사람을 당신의 생활 속으로 받아들이는 한편, 줄곧 그 사람의 마음 속에 있는 숭고함을 인정하는 것. 다른 사람들이 자신들의 결점을 극복할 수 있다는 점을 깨닫도록 도와 주십시오. 우리가 그들 속에 있는 “장미”를 그들에게 보여주면, 그들은 가시들을 극복할 것입니다. 그 때서야 장미들은 몇 번이고 되풀이 하여 피어날 것입니다.

[긍정적이세요]

남편과 아내가 잠자리에 들려는 참이었습니다. 아내가 전신이 비치는 거울 앞에 서서 자신의 모습을 뚫어지게 보았습니다.

“있잖아요, 여보,” 그녀가 말했습니다. “거울을 들여다 보니 한 늙은 부인이 보여요. 내 얼굴은 주름살 투성이고, 머리는 하얗고, 어깨는 구부정하고, 다리는 뚱뚱하게 살이 쪘고, 팔은 축 늘어졌어요.” 그녀는 남편을 바라보며 말했습니다. “내 자신에 대해 좋은 기분이 들도록 뭐 긍정적인 것 좀 말해줘요.”

남편은 뭐 긍정적인 것이 없을까 생각하며 얼마 동안 열심히 연구를 하고서는 부드럽고 사려 깊은 목소리로 말했습니다.
“음, 당신 시력은 이상이 없는 것 같소.”
