Good Friday morning!



At this time of the year, Americans become ecstatic about the declaration of independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain on the Fourth of July. Swarms of people gather around the city hall, including the White House, with their kids on their shoulders, in a stroller, or in hand, to watch the most dazzling fireworks accompanied by a pops orchestra playing patriotic songs such as God Bless America, Star Spangled Banner, This Land Is Your Land and so forth.


Traditional parades, picnics, palate-stimulating barbecues and Major League baseball games are everywhere. Hot Dog Eating Contest and Pepsi 400 or stock car-racing at Daytona Speedway are also notable. This year a 23-year-old Californian regained championship from six-time Japanese winner in the annual hot dog eating competition by eating 66 hot dogs in 12 minutes. Also, dry weather curtailed fireworks in many cities and the festivities took place under heightened security in the aftermath of the attempted car bombings in Britain. May God bless America!


Did you by any chance know Thomas Jefferson, the third president of USA who drafted the Declaration of Independence, and John Adams, the second president and a driving force for independence in 1776, both coincidentally died on the Fourth of July?



To our disappointment, Russia’s Black Sea resort of Sochi was awarded the 2014 Winter Olympics yesterday. It is sad to watch dejected people on TV and it’s unclear whether Pyeongchang would reapply or not. This reminds me of the embarrassment I experienced at the Logan airport during my time in Boston after missing a scheduled plane due to an unexpectedly heavy traffic jam caused by sudden snowfalls. An airline attendant at the check-in counter said to me in a very calm voice while rummaging through his computer for alternate flights, “It’s not the end of the world, Mr. Ahn.” Like the good old saying “little strokes fell great oaks,” fortitude will pay off. And more time to prepare for one of the biggest global events as a host country in the year 2018 may offer us an opportunity to turn a misfortune into a blessing.


Last but not least, here goes a few tips on physical and financial health:


Firstly, dark chocolate lowers blood pressure but it requires a small dose of one and a half Hershey’s Kisses or 6 grams per day, according to the research conducted by the University of Cologne in Germany.


Secondly, if you have difficulty identifying common smell such as lemon, banana and cinnamon, you need a visit to a medical clinic since it may be the first sign of Alzheimer’s disease, according to a study by the University of Cincinnati.


Thirdly, Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts & Co. (KKR), one of the world’s best leveraged buyout powerhouses, which is well known for its $25.1 billion purchase of RJR Nabisco, filed for a $1.25 billion Initial Public Offering (IPO) with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on Tuesday, following in the footsteps of its rival Blackstone. Given its long track record of good return on investments like Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway, I think it may be time to buy its shares.

[It’s All in Our Perspective]


One day a father of a very wealthy family took his son on a trip to the country with the firm purpose of showing his son how poor people live.


They spent a couple of days and nights on the farm of what would be considered a very poor family.


On their return from their trip, the father asked his son, “How was the trip?”


“It was great, Dad.”


“Did you see how poor people live?” the father asked


“Oh yeah,” said the son.


“So, tell me what you learned from the trip?” asked the father.


The son answered: “I saw that we have one dog and they had four. We have a pool that reaches to the middle of our garden and they have a creek that has no end. We have imported lanterns in our garden and they have the stars at night. Our patio reaches to the front yard and they have the whole horizon. We have a small piece of land to live on and they have fields that go beyond our sight. We have servants who serve us, but they serve others. We buy our food, but they grow theirs. We have walls around our property to protect us, they have friends to protect them.”


The boy's father was speechless.


Then his son added, “Thanks, Dad, for showing me how poor we are.”

매년 이 맘 때면, 미국인들은 7월 4일 날 대영제국으로부터 독립을 선언한데 대하여 들뜬 기분에 젖어 듭니다. 많은 사람들이 아이들을 무등 태우거나 유모차에 태우거나 혹은 손을 잡고 “신의 축복이 미국에 내리기를,” “성조기,” “이 땅은 그대의 땅” 등의 애국적인 노래들을 연주하는 팝 오케스트라에 이어지는 휘황찬란하고 매혹적인 불꽃놀이를 보러 백악관을 포함하여 시청 주변으로 몰려듭니다.



전통적인 퍼레이드, 피크닉, 구미가 당기는 바비큐와 프로야구 시합이 미국 전역에서 벌어집니다. 핫도그 먹기 대회와 펩시 400 혹은 데이토나 경주장에서의 레이스 자동차 경주 역시 유명합니다. 금년 연례 핫도그 먹기 시합에서는 23세의 캘리포니아 청년이 66개의 핫도그를 12분만에 먹어 치움으로써 6연속 우승한 일본인 챔피언으로부터 우승을 탈환했습니다. 또한, 건조한 날씨로 인해 많은 시에서 불꽃놀이가 축소되고, 영국에서 자동차 폭탄 테러 미수 사건의 여파로 보안이 강화된 속에서 축제가 진행되었습니다. 미국에 신의 가호가 있기를!



여러분은 혹시 독립 선언문을 기초했던 미국 3대 대통령 토마스 제퍼슨과 1776년 미국 독립의 추진자이며 2대 대통령인 존 애덤스 두 사람이 우연히도 독립 기념일 날 사망한 것을 아십니까?



실망스럽게도 어제 2014년 동계 올림픽 개최지는 러시아 흑해 휴양지인 소치로 결정되었습니다. 낙담한 사람들의 모습을 티브이로 보는 것은 서글프고, 평창이 다시 신청을 할 것인지는 불분명합니다. 이 일은 보스턴 시절 갑자기 내린 눈으로 발생한 예기치 못한 심한 교통 혼잡 탓에 로건 공항에서 예정된 비행기를 놓치면서 제가 겪었던 당황스러웠던 일을 기억시켜 줍니다. 출발 카운터에 근무하던 항공사 직원은 다른 비행편을 찾아주려고 컴퓨터를 뒤지면서 부드러운 말투로 제게 말했습니다. “미스터 안, 그렇다고 세상이 끝난 건 아니지요.” ‘열 번 찍어 안 넘어가는 나무 없다.’는 속담처럼 불굴의 정신은 효과가 있을 것입니다. 그리고, 가장 큰 지구촌 행사 중 하나를 2018년 개최국으로서 준비하는데 더 많은 시간을 갖는 것은 우리에게 불행을 축복으로 바꿀 수 있는 기회를 줄 지도 모릅니다.



끝으로, 신체적, 금전적 건강에 관한 몇 가지 정보를 드립니다.



첫째, 독일 쾰른 대학 연구에 의하면, 검정 초콜릿은 혈압을 낮춰 준답니다. 다만, 허쉬사 키스 초콜릿 한 조각 반 정도의 작은 양 즉 6 그램만 먹어야 한답니다.



둘째, 신시내티 대학 연구에 의하면, 레몬, 바나나, 계피 같은 흔한 냄새를 맡는 데 어려움이 있다면, 그것은 알츠하이머 병의 초기 징후일지 모르니 병원에 가보십시요.

어느 날 한 부자 아버지가 가난한 사람들은 어떻게 사는지 아들에게 보여주려는 확실한 목적을 가지고 아들을 데리고 시골로 여행을 갔습니다.



그들은 매우 가난한 집의 농장에서 며칠을 보냈습니다.



그 여행에서 돌아오자 아버지가 아들에게 물었습니다. “이번 여행 어땠니?”



“정말 좋았어요, 아빠.”



“너 가난한 사람들이 어떻게 사는지 봤니?” 아버지가 물었습니다.



“예,” 아들이 대답했습니다.



“그럼, 이번 여행에서 뭘 배웠는지 말해보렴.”



아들이 대답했습니다. “우리는 개가 한 마리인데, 그 사람들은 네 마리를 갖고 있는 걸 전 봤어요. 우리는 풀이 정원 한 가운데까지 뻗어 있는데, 그 사람들은 끝이 없는 시냇물을 갖고 있어요. 우리가 정원에 수입 랜턴을 갖고 있는 데, 그 사람들은 밤 하늘의 별들을 갖고 있어요. 우리 집 테라스는 앞 뜰까지 뻗어 있는 데, 그 사람들은 지평선 전부를 갖고 있어요. 우리가 사는 땅은 조그만 한 데, 그 사람들은 끝이 안 보이는 들판을 갖고 있어요. 우리는 우리를 섬기는 하인들을 두고 있지만, 그 사람들은 다른 사람들을 섬기고 있어요. 우리는 먹을 음식을 사는데, 그 사람들은 먹을 것을 기르고 있어요. 우리는 우리를 보호해주는 벽이 집을 둘러싸고 있는데, 그 사람들은 자기들을 보호해주는 친구들이 있어요.
