Dear all,

Good Friday morning!

Stock market indicators such as KOSPI and KOSDAQ have risen sharply over the past few months. In particular, KOSPI has hit its all-time high of 2,000-point mark. Buying stocks is now the order of the day. People make a long queue to purchase stocks so as not to be left alone in craze for money-making, based on the belief that the current bull market trends are different from the past IT boom-bust and will continue for the time being. (In the past, people have tried to justify their heavy portfolio in IT shares even amid the start of flagging IT stocks.)

Market experts insist that excessive liquidity has no way out but to stock market in terms of its investment opportunities, given the government¡¯s unswayed position and harsh measures on the real estate market. On top of this core cause for red-hot stock markets, the rapid rise of installment equity funds, and rosy expectations of Korea¡¯s economy are two pillars of the ongoing bull market. However, the key impetus to this phenomenon lies in people¡¯s psychological anxiety or impatience about their future resulting from the fact that they are supposed to live up to the age of almost 90 or older but investment savings may be insufficient for retirement.

Pressing eagerness to increase earnings can often open the door to ¡®too good to be true¡¯ financial offers. Like the lesson ¡°there¡¯s no free lunch,¡± we may need to remember that all things, which look too attractive, have hidden traps.

Let¡¯s chew over a few pieces of advice offered by Peter Lynch, the legendary manager of Magellan Fund, on stock trading: firstly, never, ever, make investments based on what you heard or other people¡¯s decisions but your own knowledge. Secondly, like the good old sayings ¡°look before you leap.¡± and ¡°forewarned is forearmed,¡± spend as much time before buying stocks as you would when purchasing a car or a house. Lastly, stock trading has nothing to do with bull or bear stock market per se. Invest in companies, not based on market trends, and ignore short-term fluctuations. Sometimes just the shares of the company you picked would fall or remain stagnant, while those of other companies in the same industry and even the stock market indicator itself would show incessant rise.

In this context, we should remain careful about all kinds of ¡®too good to be true¡¯ offers, including jumping on the bandwagon trumpeted by the present bull stock market. Use our sound judgment in front of all the sweet ¡®get rich quick¡¯ stories. Money does not grow on trees.

Good summer weekend, you all!

Hank

[Judgment]

A lady in a faded gingham dress and her husband, dressed in a homespun threadbare suit, stepped off the train in Boston, and walked timidly without an appointment into the Harvard University President's outer office.

The secretary could tell in a moment that such backwoods, country hicks had no business at Harvard and probably didn't even deserve to be in Cambridge.

She frowned...

¡°We want to see the President,¡± the man said softly. ¡°He'll be busy all day,¡± the secretary snapped. ¡°We'll wait,¡± the lady replied.

For hours, the secretary ignored them, hoping that the couple would finally become discouraged and go away. They didn't and the secretary grew frustrated and finally decided to disturb the President, even though it was a chore she always regretted. ¡°Maybe if they just see you for a few minutes, they'll leave,¡± she told him.

He sighed in exasperation and nodded. Someone of his importance obviously didn't have the time to spend with them, but he detested gingham dresses and homespun suits cluttering up his outer office. The President, stern-faced and with dignity, strutted toward the couple.

The lady told him, ¡°We had a son who attended Harvard for one year. He loved Harvard. He was happy here. But about a year ago, he was accidentally killed. My husband and I would like to erect a memorial to him, somewhere on campus.¡±

The president wasn't touched.... He was shocked. ¡°Madam,¡± he said gruffly, ¡°We can't put up a statue for every person who has attended Harvard and died. If we did, this place would look like a cemetery.¡±

¡°Oh, no,¡± the lady explained quickly. ¡°We don't want to erect a statue. We thought we would like to give a building to Harvard.¡±

The president rolled his eyes. He glanced at the gingham dress and homespun suit, and then exclaimed, ¡°A building! Do you have any earthly idea how much a building costs? We have over seven and a half million dollars in the physical plant at Harvard.¡±

For a moment the lady was silent. The President was pleased. Maybe he could get rid of them now.

The lady turned to her husband and said quietly, ¡°Is that all it costs to start a university? Why don't we just start our own?¡± Her husband nodded.

The President's face wilted in confusion and bewilderment. Mr. and Mrs. Leland Stanford got up and walked away, traveling to Palo Alto, California where they established the university that bears their name, a memorial to a son that Harvard no longer cared about.

[A Simple Robber III]

Around midnight on June 16, 2007 on the patio of a District of Columbia home a group of friends was finishing dinner. A hooded man slid through an open gate and pointed a handgun at the head of a 14-year-old girl. He shouted, ¡°Give me your money, or I¡¯ll start shooting.¡± All of a sudden, everyone froze and even the earth looked to stop revolving.

The silence of midnight was broken by a bold proposal offered by a slim-figured woman who emptied almost half a bottle of wine, ¡°We were just finishing dinner. Why don¡¯t you have a glass of wine with us?¡±

The intruder said after carefully sipping their Chateau Malescot St-Exupery, ¡°Damn, that¡¯s good wine.¡± The girl¡¯s father then told him to take the whole glass and the woman offered him the bottle. The robber, with his hood down, took another sip and a bite of Camembert cheese and put the gun in his sweatpants.

The robber, after drinking a few more glasses of wine, said, ¡°I think I may have come to the wrong house. Can I get a hug?¡± The slim-figured woman stood up and wrapped her arms around the robber and the four other guests followed.

A few moments later the man walked away with the crystal wine glass in hand. No one was hurt. Once he was gone, the group went inside, locked the door and called 911. Police couldn¡¯t locate a suspect. True story.
