Good Friday morning!


The stubbornly incessant rainfalls in the entire peninsular finally gave way to clear skies this week. A tinge of autumn is getting sensible day after day such as cooler morning and evening breezes, swaying cosmos flowers along the country roads, chestnuts’ripeness to burst open, or you name it.

Last summer, we had sleepless nights for two weeks in fear of the overflow of the Han River, while heavy floods struck the impoverished North Korea.

This summer, we experienced incessant passing rains which portend the advent of sub-tropical weather caused by global warming. Meantime, our compatriots across the border had suffered unprecedented floods which claimed more than 800 people, left about 300,000 people homeless and washed away 800 pubic buildings, over 540 bridges, power lines, sections of railroads, and, more importantly, paddy and maize fields. Even the bodies of 11 North Koreans, which floated into the South, were found around the Imjin River that crosses the border.


Outside of our soil, floods battered China, Taiwan, Vietnam, the Philippines, Bangladesh and India over the past weeks and Hurricane Dean drenched central Mexico to stretch Texans’ nerves. Also, hundreds of people were forced to flee their homes in the Midwest in US, including Ohio, Wisconsin and Minnesota.

Given the periodicity, fatality and magnitude of the disastrous impact, we cannot ignore victims of floods no matter where they breathe. Some people may be lukewarm about reaching out their helping hands to Koreans on north soil because of their hatred towards the North Korean regime that doesn’t function properly enough to feed its own people.

However, the United Nations disclosed its willingness to render humanitarian assistance via UN World Food Programme (WFP) and the USAID announced on August 16 that it is giving $100,000 to two humanitarian agencies to help them provide blankets, shelter materials, water containers and other supplies. Mercy Corps, a non-profit organization engaged in humanitarian aid, is providing nearly $830,000 in medicine and clothing. Nike has donated more than $430,000 in clothing in addition to transportation costs for these goods and more than $300,000 worth of medicine.

It’s always gratifying to see or hear our compatriots sweating at helping the poor on foreign soil, including Africa, South and Central Asia, and Latin America. What about taking care of our own compatriots across the border before helping other people?

[Helping Hands]

A mother, wishing to encourage her son's progress at the piano, bought tickets to a performance by the great Polish pianist Ignace Paderewski. When the evening arrived, they found their seats near the front of the concert hall and eyed the majestic Steinway waiting on the stage. Soon the mother found a friend to talk to, and the boy slipped away.

At eight o'clock, the lights in the auditorium began to dim, the spotlights came on, and only then did they notice the boy - up on the piano bench, innocently picking out "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star." His mother gasped in shock and embarrassment but, before she could retrieve her son, the master himself appeared on the stage and quickly moved to the keyboard.

He whispered gently to the boy, "Don't quit. Keep playing." Leaning over, Paderewski reached down with his left hand and began filling in the bass part. Soon his right arm reached around the other side and improvised a delightful obbligato. Together, the old master and the young novice held the crowd mesmerized with their blended and beautiful music.

In all our lives, we receive helping hands - some we notice, some we don't. Equally we ourselves have countless opportunities to provide helping hands - sometimes we would like our assistance to be noticed, sometimes we don't. Little of what we all achieve is without learning from others and without support from others and what we receive we should hand out.

[Amazing Technology]

An Amish boy and his father were visiting a mall. They were amazed by almost everything they saw, but especially by two shiny, silver walls that could move apart and then slide back together again.

The boy asked, “What is this, Father?” The father (never having seen an elevator) responded, “Son, I have never seen anything like this in my life. I don’t know what it is.”

While the boy and his father were watching with amazement, a fat old lady in a wheel chair rolled up to the moving walls and pressed a button. The walls opened and the lady rolled between them into a small room. The walls closed and the boy and his father watched the small circular numbers above the walls light up sequentially. They continued to watch until it reached the last number and then the numbers began to light in the reverse order.

Finally, the walls opened up again and a gorgeous, voluptuous 24-year-old woman stepped out.

The father, not taking his eyes off the young woman, said quietly to his son, “Go get your Mother.”

여러분, 안녕하십니까? 금요일 아침입니다.

전 한반도에 걸쳐 고집스럽게 그칠 줄 모르고 내리던 비는 금주 들어 마침내 맑은 하늘에게 그 자리를 양보했습니다. 그리고, 서늘해진 아침 저녁으로 부는 바람, 시골 길을 따라 하늘거리는 코스모스 꽃, 터질 듯이 익어가는 밤 등등 가을 기운은 날마다 피부로 느낄 수 있습니다.

지난 해 여름 우리는 한강이 범람할까 봐 두려워 2주간 잠 못 이루는 밤을 보냈고, 가난에 찌든 북한에는 엄청난 홍수가 밀어 닥쳤습니다.

금년 여름 우리는 지구 온난화의 영향으로 인한 아열대성 기후의 도래를 알리는 깜짝 소나기를 계속 겪었습니다. 한편, 휴전선 저쪽의 우리 동포들은 800명 이상이 죽고, 약 30만 명의 이재민이 생겼으며, 800개의 공공건물과 540개 이상의 다리, 전선, 철로 그리고 무엇보다도, 논과 옥수수 밭이 쓸려 가버린 전례 없는 홍수를 겪었습니다. 심지어 남쪽으로 떠내려온 북한 주민 시체 11구가 휴전선을 가로지르는 임진강 주변에서 발견되기도 했습니다.

우리 나라 밖에서는 지난 수주 간 홍수가 중국, 대만, 베트남, 필리핀, 방글라데시 그리고 인도를 강타했고, 허리케인 딘은 중부 멕시코를 물바다로 만들어 텍사스 사람들을 잔뜩 긴장시켰습니다. 그리고, 오하이오, 위스콘신, 미네소타 등 미국 중서부에서는 수 백 명의 사람들이 집을 버리고 도망가야만 했습니다.

이렇게 주기적으로 발생하고, 피할 수 없는 숙명이며, 재난의 정도가 심한 홍수의 특성을 감안할 때 우리는 홍수의 피해자들이 어디에 살든 그들을 무시할 수 없습니다. 자기 국민들을 먹일 만큼 제대로 작동하지도 못 하는 북한의 체제가 미워 북한 사람들에게 도움의 손길을 뻗는 것에 대하여 마음이 내키지 않아 하는 사람들도 있을지 모르겠습니다.

그러나, 유엔은 유엔 식량기구를 통해 인도적 지원을 하겠다는 의사를 밝혔고, 미국 국제 개발처는 8월 16일 담요, 이재민 수용소 물자, 물통 기타 보급품을 공급하는 두 원조 기구에 10만달러를 지급한다고 발표했습니다. 비영리 원조 기구인 '자선 봉사단(머시 코어)'은 83만달러 상당의 의약품과 의류를 지원하고 있으며, 나이키는 43만 불 이상의 의류와 그 수송비 그리고 30만 불 이상의 의약품을 기부했습니다.

우리 국민들이 아프리카, 남 아시아 및 중부 아시아, 남미 등 외국에서 가난한 사람들을 돕는 데 애쓰는 것을 보거나 얘기를 들으면 언제나 기분이 좋습니다. 다른 민족을 돕는 데 앞서 휴전선 넘어 우리 동포들을 돌보는 것은 어떨까요?

[도움의 손길]

아들의 피아노 실력 향상을 격려하는 마음에서 한 어머니가 폴랜드 출신의 위대한 피아니스트 이그니스 패데레브스키의 연주회 티켓을 샀습니다. 연주회 날 밤이 되어 연주회 앞쪽의 그들 좌석에 앉자 무대 위에는 멋진 스타인웨이 피아노가 놓여 있는 것이 보였습니다. 곧 어머니가 친구를 만나 얘기에 빠져 있을 때 소년은 자리를 빠져나갔습니다.

8시가 되어 연주회 강당의 불빛이 어두워지기 시작하고, 스팟 라이트가 비쳐졌습니다. 그 때 사람들은 그 소년이 피아노 의자에 앉아 천연덕스럽게 “반짝, 반짝 작은 별”을 골라 내 연주하는 것을 알았습니다. 소년의 어머니는 놀라고 당황하여 숨이 막힐 지경이었는 데 소년의 어머니가 소년을 데려오기 전에 위대한 피아니스트가 무대 위에 나타나 재빨리 건반을 향해 걸어갔습니다.

그는 소년의 귀에 대고 부드럽게 속삭였습니다. “그만 두지 말고, 계속 하거라.” 패데레브스키는 소년에게 기대며 왼 손을 뻗어 베이스를 넣어주었습니다. 곧 그는 오른 팔을 다른 쪽으로 뻗어 오블리가토 (필수 반주부)를 경쾌하게 즉흥적으로 연주했습니다. 나이 든 피아노 대가와 어린 피아노 초보자가 함께 연주하는 아름다운 음악은 청중을 매료시켰습니다.

우리 모두의 인생에서 우리는 누군가의 도움을 받습니다. 때로는 알지만, 때로는 누군지 모릅니다. 똑 같이 우리도 남을 도울 수 있는 수많은 기회를 가집니다. 때로는 우리의 도움이 알려지기를 바라지만, 때로는 알려지지 않기를 바랍니다. 우리가 이룬 것 중에 다른 사람들로부터 배우지 않고 다른 사람들의 도움을 받지 않고 이룬 것은 거의 없으므로 우리가 얻은 것을 우리는 다른 사람들에게 베풀어야 할 것입니다.

[놀라운 기술]

한 아미쉬 (미국판 청학동 사람들) 소년과 소년의 아버지가 한 쇼핑 몰에 들렀습니다. 보는 것 대부분이 신기했지만, 특히 열렸다 다시 저절로 닫히는 번쩍거리는 은색의 두 개의 벽이 특히 신기했습니다.

소년이 물었습니다. “아빠, 저게 뭐에요?” (엘리베이터를 본 적이 없는) 아버지가 대답했습니다. “얘야, 아빠는 여태껏 이런 건 본 적이 없어. 이게 뭔지 모르겠다.”

소년과 소년의 아버지가 놀라서 (엘리베이터를) 바라보고 있는 데 휠 체어를 탄 뚱뚱한 늙은 부인이 그 움직이는 벽으로 다가가 버튼을 눌렀습니다. 벽이 열리자 부인이 벽 사이로 휠체어를 굴려 조그만 공간 속으로 들어 갔습니다. 벽이 닫히고 벽 위에 있는 조그마한 원형의 숫자들이 순차적으로 불이 켜지는 것을 소년과 소년의 아버지는 쳐다 보았습니다. 그들이 계속 쳐다 보자 그것은 마지막 숫자에 이르렀으며, 그러자 이제는 숫자들의 불이 거꾸로 켜지기 시작했습니다.

드디어, 벽이 다시 열리자 잘 생기고 육감적인 24세의 여자가 엘리베이터에서 나왔습니다.

그 젊은 여자에게서 눈을 떼지 못하는 소년의 아버지는 아들에게 나직하게 말했습니다. “가서 네 엄마 데려오너라.”
