Dear all,

Good Friday morning!

Everybody is fully aware that our financial markets aren¡¯t freestanding anymore but are synchronized with Wall Street. Just about a month ago, the Dow was trading at a record 14,000. Then, over the next couple of weeks, it fell by 800 points due to sub-prime mortgage problems. It bounced back to regain about 500 of those points thanks to the Fed¡¯s rare and symbolic move towards the financial markets to cut its discount rate. But that didn¡¯t last long and suddenly dropped back down to around 13,000. Now it¡¯s roller-coasting above and below 13,000 by nervously reacting to daily good or bad news.

More economists and investors now believe the odds are rising that the Fed will lower its key interest rate by at least one-quarter percentage point at the next FOMC meeting on September 18 in an aim to keep the economy on track. Still, skeptics note Bernanke¡¯s difference from his predecessor in that he prefers rational consensus based on supporting statistics and intrinsic market recurrence to preemptive measures based on intuition about market directions. This difference may lead to the conclusion that Greenspan would have already cut rates, while Bernanke is not convinced that the economy needs a cut for fear that it might encourage more of the sloppy lending that led to the recent crisis and spark another bubble.

Dr. Lawrence Summers, former Secretary of the Treasury and President of Harvard University, recently insisted on his interview with ABC TV that the risks of recession are greater than they have been anytime since 9/11. However, we could take it with a grain of salt, since last October he joined a $25 billion Wall Street hedge fund company, D.E. Shaw & Co, as a part-time managing director and hedge funds have been hit hard by the recent mortgage market troubles.

While hoping it is not like waiting for Godot that we expect the Fed to cut its key rate, we need to know how sages act in stock market during such jittery times.

Firstly, they believe cash is king in credit crunch markets like now. They try to take advantage of opportunities both in the stock and real estate markets as they become available. They don¡¯t rush to snatch bargains the minute they see them developing. Once a major market decline begins, history tells, it often continues for more than six months. Stock prices can remain relatively flat for months longer.

Secondly, they don¡¯t keep money in the stock market if they plan on needing cash within five years. If they want to make a down payment on a home three years from now on, they may end up in the middle of a deep market decline, with their holdings worth a lot less than they were a few years earlier.

Thirdly, they don¡¯t panic when the markets slump. They know the markets always and eventually will recover. Regardless of how quick or slow the recovery is, selling is a bad idea to them.

Fourthly, when stocks are down, they believe it¡¯s a good time to put money in the market. Therefore, now may be the time to plan an optimum diversification for long-term investments and develop the buy list that will reposition the portfolio the way you want it. You would then follow the stocks in your buy list but move slowly in adding them to your holdings.

Last but certainly not least and on a completely different note, we know that Tyson Gay won the world 100-meter champion title at the World Track and Field Championships in Osaka, Japan last Sunday evening. Many people bet that Asafa Powell, a Jamaican sprinter holding the world record of 9.77 seconds, would romp away with Gay but an unfriendly racing condition or an unusually scorching heat came into play. More notably, a pep talk from his mother truly cheered him up by clearing off negativity that overwhelmed him before the biggest race of his life, according to Gay¡¯s post-game interview. Yes, encouraging our strayed kids or simply spending time with them, who are struggling to step up, may work better than demanding them to correct their actions that look wrong or unpleasant in our eyes.

Have a good weekend!

Hank

[That¡¯s My Child]

I was watching some little kids play soccer. These kids were only five or six years old. They were playing a real game - a serious game. Two teams, complete with coaches, uniforms, and parents. I didn¡¯t know any of them, so I was able to enjoy the game without the distraction of being anxious about winning or losing. I wished the parents and coaches could have done the same.

The teams were pretty evenly matched. I will just call them Team One and Team Two. Nobody scored in the first period. The kids were hilarious. They were clumsy and terribly inefficient. They fell over their own feet, they stumbled over the ball, they kicked at the ball and missed it, but they didn't seem to care. They were having fun.

In the second quarter, the Team One coach pulled out what must have been his first team and put in the scrubs, except for his best player who now guarded the goal. The game took a dramatic turn. I guess winning is important even when you¡¯re five years old, because the Team Two coach left his best players in, and the Team One scrubs were no match for them.

Team Two swarmed around the little guy who was now the Team One goalie. He was an outstanding athlete, but he was no match for three or four who were also very good. Team Two began to score. The Team One goalie gave it everything he had, recklessly throwing his body in front of incoming balls, trying valiantly to stop them.

Team Two scored two goals in quick succession. It infuriated the young boy. He became a raging maniac - shouting, running, diving. With all the stamina he could muster, he covered the boy who now had the ball, but that boy kicked it to another boy twenty feet away, and by the time he repositioned himself, it was too late - Team Two scored a third goal.

I soon learned who the goalie¡¯s parents were. They were nice, neat-looking people. I could tell that his dad had just come from the office - he still had his suit and tie on. They yelled encouragement to their son. I became totally absorbed, watching the boy on the field and his parents on the sidelines. After the third goal, the little kid changed. He could see it was no use, he couldn¡¯t stop them. He didn¡¯t quit, but he became quite desperate, futility was written all over him. His father changed, too. He had been urging his son to try harder, yelling advice and encouragement.

But then he changed. He became anxious. He tried to say that it was okay - to hang in there. He grieved for the pain his son was feeling. After the fourth goal, I knew what was going to happen. I¡¯ve seen it before.

The little boy needed help so badly, and there was no help to be had. He retrieved the ball from the net and handed it to the referee and then he cried. He just stood there while huge tears rolled down both cheeks. He went to his knees and put his fists to his eyes - and he cried the tears of the helpless and brokenhearted.

When the boy went to his knees, I saw the father start onto the field. His wife clutched his arm and said, ¡°Jim, don¡¯t. You¡¯ll embarrass him.¡± But he tore loose from her and ran onto the field. He wasn¡¯t supposed to -- the game was still in progress. Suit, tie, dress shoes and all, he charged onto the field, and he picked up his son so everybody would know that this was his boy, and he hugged him and held him and cried with him. I¡¯ve never been so proud of a man in my life. He carried him off the field, and when he got close to the sidelines I heard him say, ¡°Scotty, I¡¯m so proud of you. You were great out there. I want everybody to know that you are my son.¡±

¡°Daddy,¡± the boy sobbed, ¡°I couldn¡¯t stop them. I tried, Daddy, I tried and tried, and they scored on me.¡±

¡°Scotty, it doesn¡¯t matter how many times they scored on you. You¡¯re my son, and I¡¯m proud of you. I want you to go back out there and finish the game. I know you want to quit, but you can¡¯t. And, son, you¡¯re going to get scored on again, but it doesn¡¯t matter. Go on now.¡±

It made a difference - I could tell it did. When you're all alone and you're getting scored on - and you can¡¯t stop them, it means a lot to know that it doesn¡¯t matter to those who love you. The little guy ran back on to the field - and they scored two more times, but it was okay.

[FBI]

FBI agents conducted a raid of a psychiatric hospital in San Diego that was under investigation for medical insurance fraud. After hours of reviewing thousands of medical records, the dozens of agents had worked up quite an appetite. The agent in charge of the investigation called a nearby pizza parlor with delivery service to order a quick dinner for his colleagues.

The following telephone conversation took place and was recorded by the FBI because they were taping all conversations at the hospital. True story.

Agent: Hello. I would like to order 19 large pizzas and 67 cans of soda.

Pizza Man: And where would you like them delivered?

Agent: We're over at the psychiatric hospital.

Pizza Man: The psychiatric hospital?

Agent: That's right. I'm an FBI agent.

Pizza Man: You're an FBI agent?

Agent: That's correct. Just about everybody here is.

Pizza Man: And you're at the psychiatric hospital?

Agent: That's correct. And make sure you don't go through the front (go) to the service entrance to deliver the pizzas.

Pizza Man: And you say you're all FBI agents?

Agent: That's right. How soon can you have them here?

Pizza Man: And everyone at the psychiatric hospital is an FBI agent?

Agent: That's right. We've been here all day and we're starving.

Pizza Man: How are you going to pay for all of this?

Agent: I have my checkbook right here.

Pizza Man: And you're all FBI agents?

Agent: That's right. Everyone here is an FBI agent. Can you remember to bring the pizzas and sodas to the service entrance in the rear? We have the front doors locked.

Pizza Man: I don't think so.

Click.
