Good Friday morning!


The sky was unusually crystalline on that day. People looking up at the clarity of the autumn sky felt that a jumbo jet airliner was flying too closely to skyscrapers in Manhattan and soon stood aghast when it eventually rammed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center, landmark buildings of New York.

“Did the pilot doze off in a wink?” It was 8:46 a.m. local time.

Sixteen minutes later at 9:02 a.m. they watched another jumbo airliner crash into the South Tower of WTC. Still, people thought that the world’s tallest buildings would stand off such incidental damages but both skyscrapers collapsed into Ground Zero before their eyes. “Oh, my God! These are not merely accidental incidents. Maybe some outrageously evil attempts lie behind these brutal incidents. …”


They could then hear people screaming in surprise, “Terrorist attacks!”

And … the third and fourth airplanes crashed into the Pentagon and in a field in southwest Pennsylvania, about 150 miles northwest of the White House, at 9:37 a.m. and at 10:03 a.m., respectively.

Those were a series of coordinated al-Qaeda terrorist suicide attacks which took place on September 11, 2001. The world was stupefied at the bizarre scene. Incidents beyond imagination just happened on that day and claimed 2,974 citizens’ lives, excluding 19 hijackers and 24 missing but presumed dead people.

This year, rain gently fell on the grounds of these sad but indelible incidents’ sites in New York and Washington, D.C., muffling the loved families’ mourning for victims at the 6th remembrance ceremonies.

Obviously, 9/11 did change our daily lives such as higher visibility of security guards at government buildings, the forming of a longer queue at airport checkpoints, tighter standards for driver’s licenses, the requirement to wear a photo ID instead of simply flashing it at the entrance of skyscrapers and so forth.

Terrorists will win if we just lament over the innocent death and remain indignant at the inconvenience of our daily lives caused by al-Qaeda’s atrocity that was masterminded by Osama bin Laden.

We should know that there were innumerably many heroic acts of those unknown but killed trying to save others that morning at the risk of their own lives. For instance, Mr. Glenn Winuk, a volunteer fireman and lawyer, worked a block and a half from WTC. After helping evacuate his Broadway law offices, he grabbed a medic’s bag and ran toward the smoke pouring from the South Tower. That’s where his remains were found after the towers fell. The movie starring Nicolas Cage, World Trade Center, is also based on the true story of fire fighters who sacrificed themselves for others.

These people are true heroes of our era. We should remember not only the horror of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, but also the extraordinary outpouring of humanity during the following days, weeks and months. If we show the inherent joy of giving by means of volunteering and acts of charity and exemplify the lofty value of freedom vis-a-vis the Islam world with different value chains, don’t you think people on earth live in peace?

Some of us may be nonchalant to the 9/11 incidents as a far cry. However, it may not be safe to assume that it won’t happen to us in Far East someday in the future, given Taliban’s recent kidnapping of Koreans in Afghanistan and the ominous prediction of the clash of civilization made by Samuel Huntington in 1993 by dividing the world into three major civilizations such as the Western, the Eastern and Islam Civilizations. Let us note that these 9/11 terrorist attacks did not happen one day out of nowhere.

Will it be a pipe dream that people from both Western Civilization and the Muslim world rejoice together on the same event? Will Osama bin Laden and his al-Qaeda militants not hug people on different political and social belief or religion by a long shot?

[The Pig and the Cow]

“Why is it,” said the rich man to his minister, “that people call me stingy when everyone knows that when I die I’m leaving everything to the church?”

“Let me tell you a fable about the pig and the cow,” said the minister.

“The pig was unpopular, while the cow was beloved. This puzzled the pig. ‘People speak warmly of your gentle nature and your sorrowful eyes,’ the pig said to the cow. ‘They think you’re generous because each day you give them milk and cream. But what about me? I give them everything I have. I give bacon and ham. I provide bristles for brushes. They even pickle my feet! Yet not one likes me. Why is that?’”

“Do you know what the cow answered?” said the minister. “The cow said, ‘Perhaps it is because I give while I’m still alive.’”

[Bush’s Brains]

Hearing so many people speaking about his intelligence level, George W. Bush decided to get his brain checked. The physician diagnosis was as follows:

“Mr. President, you have two brains, the left and right, like all normal people. But the problem is that in your left brain there is nothing right and in your right brain there is nothing left….”

우리 시대의 영웅들

그 날 하늘은 이례적으로 청명했습니다. 가을 하늘의 그 청명함을 올려다 보는 사람들은 점보 제트 여객기 한 대가 맨해턴의 고층빌딩에 너무 가까이 비행하고 있다고 느꼈고, 곧 그 비행기가 결국 뉴욕의 대표적 건물 중 하나인 세계무역센터 북쪽 타워를 들이받자 경악했습니다.

“조종사가 깜빡 졸았나?” 시간은 뉴욕 시간으로 오전 8시 46분이었습니다.

16분 후 오전 9시2분 사람들은 또 다른 점보 여객기 한 대가 세계무역센터 남쪽 타워 안으로 부딪혀 들어가는 것을 바라봤습니다. 하지만, 사람들은 세계에서 가장 높은 건물이 그러한 우연한 피해 정도는 견뎌낼 줄로 생각했습니다. 그러나, 두 고층 건물은 그들의 눈 앞에서 땅으로 폭삭 주저 앉았습니다. “아이구, 맙소사! 이건 그냥 우연한 사고가 아니야. 어쩌면, 엄청나게 사악한 어떤 책략이 이 잔인 무도한 사건 뒤에 숨어 있을지 몰라 ….”

그리고, 그들은 사람들이 깜짝 놀라 비명을 지르는 소리를 들을 수 있었습니다. “테러다!”

그리고 나서 세 번째, 네 번째 비행기가 각각 오전 9시 37분에 펜타곤 (미 국방부 건물)과 오전 10시 3분에 백악관에서 북서쪽으로 약 150 마일 떨어진 펜슬베이니어 주 남서쪽 들판을 들이 받았습니다.

이것이 2001년 9월 11일에 발생했던, 알-카에다에 의한 일련의 자살 테러 공격이었습니다. 전 세계는 예기치 못한 장면에 망연자실했습니다. 상상을 초월하는 사건이 그 날 일어났고, 19명의 비행기 납치범과 행방불명이지만 사망한 것으로 추정되는 24 명의 사람들을 제외하고도2974명의 시민들이 목숨을 잃었습니다.

금년에는 뉴욕과 워싱턴에 있는 이렇게 슬프지만 잊을 수 없는 사건 현장에 부슬부슬 비가 내려 여섯 번째 추모식에 참석한 사랑하는 희생자 가족의 애도를 감쌌습니다.

확실히 9.11 테러로 정부 건물의 보안 요원이 더 눈에 띄고, 공항 검색대 앞의 대기선이 더 길어 지고, 운전 면허증 발급 요건이 강화되고, 고층 건물 입구에서 사진이 든 신분증을 쓱 보여주는 대신에 차고 있어야 하는 등 그것은 우리의 일상 생활을 많이 바꾸어 놓았습니다.

그러나, 만약 우리가 죄도 없이 죽은 사람들을 단지 비통해하기만 하고, 오사마 빈 라든이 배후에서 조종한 알-카에다의 잔인 무도한 테러 때문에 불편해진 우리들 일상생활에 분개해 하기만 한다면, 승리자는 테러리스트들이 될 것입니다.

우리는 그 날 아침 자신의 생명의 위험을 무릅쓰고 다른 사람들을 구하려다 죽은 수많은 이름없는 사람들의 영웅적 행동이 있었음을 알아야 하겠습니다. 예를 들면, 변호사며 자원봉사 소방대원인 글렌 위넉씨는 세계무역센터에서 한 블럭 반 떨어진 곳에서 일하고 있었지만, 브로드웨이가에 있는 자신의 법률 사무소 직원들의 대피를 도운 뒤 바로 의료장비가 든 가방을 거머쥐고 남쪽 타워에서 뿜어져 나오는 연기를 향해 달려갔습니다. 그 타워가 주저앉은 뒤 바로 거기서 그의 시신이 발견되었습니다. 니콜라스 케이지가 주연으로 나오는 영화 “세계무역센터” 역시 남을 위해 자신을 희생한 소방대원들의 실제 이야기를 근거로 한 것입니다.

이러한 사람들이야 말로 진정한 우리 시대의 영웅입니다. 우리는 9.11 테러의 끔찍함 뿐만 아니라 그 후로 몇 날, 몇 주, 몇 달 동안 쏟아졌던 엄청난 인도주의를 잊지 말아야 하겠습니다. 만약에 우리가 자원봉사 활동 및 자선행위를 통해 우리와 다른 가치관을 가진 이슬람 세계에 대하여 그러한 활동에 고유한 남을 돕는 기쁨을 보여주고, 자유라는 숭고한 가치의 예를 보여준다면, 이 세상 사람들은 평화롭게 살 수 있지 않을까요?

우리들 가운데에는 9.11 테러는 우리와 상관없는 일이라며 무관심한 분들도 계실 것입니다. 하지만, 최근 아프가니스탄에서 있었던 탈레반의 한국인 인질 사건을 보나 1993년 새뮤얼 헌팅턴이 세계를 크게 서구 문명, 동양 문명, 이슬람 문명이라는 3대 주요 문명으로 나눈 뒤 내렸던 기분 나쁜 문명의 충돌이란 예언을 감안할 때 이러한 일이 앞으로 언젠가 극동지역에 살고 있는 우리에게는 일어나지 않을 것으로 보는 것은 안전하지 않을지 모릅니다. 우리 모두 이러한9.11 테러가 어느 날 갑자기 난데없이 일어나지 않았다는 점에 주목합시다.

서구 문명과 이슬람 세계 출신 사람들이 모두 함께 동일한 일에 대하여 기뻐하는 것은 허황된 꿈일까요? 오사마 빈 라든과 그의 알-카에다 전사들이 정치적, 사회적 신념이 다르거나 종교가 다른 사람들을 껴안는 것은 전혀 불가능할까요?

[돼지와 소]

부자가 목사님께 여쭸습니다. “내가 죽으면 가진 것 모두를 교회에 바칠 것을 알면서 왜 사람들이 날 구두쇠라고 부릅니까?”

“제가 돼지와 소에 대한 우화를 말씀 드리지요.” 목사님이 말했습니다.

“소는 사랑을 받는 데 돼지는 인기가 없었습니다. 돼지는 이것이 궁금했지요. ‘사람들은 너의 부드러운 성품과 우수에 잠긴듯한 눈에 대해 좋게 말하더라.’ 돼지가 소에게 말했습니다. ‘사람들은 네가 매일 우유와 크림을 주니까 네 마음씨가 좋다고 생각하는 데 난 어찌된 거야? 난 사람들에게 내가 가진 것 모두를 주는 데. 난 베이컨과 햄을 주지. 난 브러시용 털을 제공하지. 사람들은 내 발까지 피클하지! 그런데도 아무도 날 좋아하지 않아. 왜 그래?’”

“소가 뭐라고 대답했는지 아십니까?” 목사님이 말했습니다. “소가 대답하기를 ‘어쩌면 나는 살아 있는 동안에 (사람들에게) 주기 때문일거야.’”

[부시 대통령의 뇌]

너무 많은 사람들이 자신의 지능 수준에 대하여 말하는 것을 듣고서 조지 부시 대통령이 자신의 머리를 한 번 체크해보기로 했습니다. 의사의 진단 결과는 다음과 같았습니다.

“대통령 각하, 각하는 보통 사람들처럼 왼 쪽과 오른 쪽 두 쪽의 뇌를 갖고 계십니다. 그런데 문제는 각하의 왼쪽 (left) 뇌에는 정상인 (right) 게 없고, 각하의 오른 쪽 (right) 뇌에는 남은 (left) 게 없습니다.”
