Good Friday morning!

The Iowa caucuses have kicked off hotly contested nomination battles in both Democratic and Republican parties, prior to the U.S. presidential election in November. Public opinion polls show that Senator Barack Obama of Illinois is slightly leading in a tight three-way race with Senator Hillary Clinton of New York and former North Carolina Senator John Edwards.

We know both Hillary and John well. But most of us probably just know Obama as an African-American presidential candidate with a key message of standing up for change to keep the American dream alive. Who the hell is he?

He was born in 1961 in Honolulu to a Kenyan father and an American mother. His parents met while both were University of Hawaii students but separated when he was two years old and later divorced. His father went to Harvard University to pursue Ph.D. studies, then returned to Kenya, where he died in an auto accident in 1982.


After his mother married an Indonesian student, he moved to Jakarta at age 6, where he attended local schools through age 10. He then lived with his maternal grandparents in Honolulu until he graduated from a high school. He studied at Occidental College in L.A. for two years, then transferred to Columbia University, where he majored in political science with specialization in international relations.

After working as a community organizer in Chicago, he entered Harvard Law School and was elected as Harvard Law Review’s first black president in its 104-year history. He completed his Juris Doctor degree magna cum laude. He served in the Illinois Senate from 1997 to 2004. He became a nationwide figure after delivering the keynote address at the 2004 Democratic National Convention in Boston while still an Illinois state legislator. He went on to win election to the U.S. Senate in the same year with a landslide 70% of the vote.

We may now understand what attracted attention of many Americans, white or black, to him.

Last but not least, one of my colleagues dropped a line with photos that illustrates the difficulty to clean up the oil slick in Taean peninsula due to the low temperature, high winds and waves. The beauty of his ministration is that he went there with his family, including his daughters, and that he took his annual leave for that end.

This reminds me that “help others” appears on the top ten list of Americans’ New Year’s resolutions every year.

[Circle of Love]

You know, he almost didn’t see the old lady, stranded on the side of the road. But even in the dim light of day, he could see she needed help. So he pulled up in front of her Mercedes and got out. His Pontiac was still sputtering when he approached her.

Even with the smile on his face, she was worried. No one had stopped to help for the last hour or so. Was he going to hurt her? He didn’t look safe, he looked poor and hungry. He could see that she was frightened, standing out there in the cold. He knew how she felt.

He said, “I’m here to help you ma’am. Why don’t you wait in the car where it’s warm? By the way, my name is Bryan.”

Well, all she had was a flat tire, but for an old lady, that was bad enough. Bryan crawled under the car looking for a place to put the jack, skinning his knuckles a time or two. Soon he was able to change the tire. But he had to get dirty and his hands hurt. As he was tightening up the lug nuts, she rolled down the window and began to talk to him. She told him that she was from St. Louis and was only just passing through. She couldn’t thank him enough for coming to her aid.

Bryan just smiled as he closed her trunk. She asked him how much she owed him. Any amount would have been all right with her. She had already imagined all the awful things that could have happened, had he not stopped.

Bryan never thought twice about the money. This was not a job to him. This was helping someone in need, and God knows there were plenty who had given him a hand in the past. He had lived his whole life that way, and it never occurred to him to act any other way. He told her that if she really wanted to pay him back, the next time she saw someone who needed help, she could give that person the assistance that he (or she) needed, and Bryan added “...and think of me.”

He waited until she started her car and drove off. It had been a cold and depressing day, but he felt good as he headed for home, disappearing into the twilight.

A few miles down the road the lady saw a small cafe. She went in to grab a bite to eat, and take the chill off before she made the last leg of her trip home. It was a dingy looking restaurant. Outside were two old gas pumps. The whole scene was unfamiliar to her. The cash register was like the telephone of an out-of-work actor. It didn’t ring much.

A waitress came over and brought a clean towel to wipe her wet chair. She had a sweet smile, one that even being on her feet for the whole day couldn’t erase. The lady noticed that the waitress was nearly eight months pregnant, but she never let the strain and aches change her attitude.

The old lady wondered how someone who had so little could be so giving to a stranger. Then she remembered Bryan.

After the lady finished her meal, and the waitress went to get change for her hundred dollar bill, the lady slipped right out the door. She was gone by the time the waitress came back. She wondered where the lady could be, then she noticed something written on the napkin under which were four $100 bills. There were tears in her eyes when she read what the lady wrote. It read, “You don’t owe me anything. I have been there, too. Somebody once helped me out the way I’m helping you. If you really want to pay me back, here is what you do. Do not let this chain of love end with you.”

That night when she got home from work and climbed into bed, she was thinking about the money and what the lady had written. How could the lady have known how much she and her husband needed? With the baby due next month, it was going to be hard. She knew how worried her husband was, and as he lay sleeping next to her, she gave him a soft kiss and whispered soft and low, “Everything’s gonna be all right; I love you, Bryan.”

ATTORNEY: Doctor, before you performed the autopsy, did you check for a pulse?
WITNESS: No.

ATTORNEY: Did you check for blood pressure?
WITNESS: No.

ATTORNEY: Did you check for breathing?
WITNESS: No.

ATTORNEY: So, then is it possible that the patient was alive when you began the autopsy?
WITNESS: No.

ATTORNEY: How can you be so sure, Doctor?
WITNESS: Because his brain was sitting on my desk in a jar.

ATTORNEY: But could the patient have still been alive, nevertheless?
WITNESS: Yes, it is possible that he could have been alive and practicing law.

남을 돕는다는 것

11월에 있을 미국 대통령 선거에 앞서 열리는 아이오와주 예비선거로 민주당과 공화당 양당의 치열한 지명전이 개시되었습니다. 여론조사에 따르면, 일리노이주 출신 배랙 오바마 연방 상원의원이 뉴욕주 출신 힐러리 클린턴 연방 상원의원 및 노스 캐롤라이나주 출신의 전 연방 상원의원 존 에드워즈와의 3자간 접전에서 근소하게 리드하고 있다고 합니다.

우리는 힐러리와 존 양인에 대하여는 잘 알고 있습니다. 그러나, 우리들 대부분은 아마도 오바마가 어메리칸 드림을 살리기 위한 개혁을 내세우는 흑인 대통령 후보라는 것만 알고 있을 것입니다. 도대체 그는 어떤 사람인가요?

그는 1961년 호놀룰루에서 케냐인 아버지와 미국인 어머니 사이에서 태어났습니다. 그의 부모는 하와이 대학 학생 때 만났지만, 그가 두 살 때 별거한 후에 이혼을 했습니다. 그의 아버지는 하버드 대학에서 박사 공부를 계속했고, 케냐에 돌아가 1982년 교통사고로 사망했습니다.

그는 그의 어머니가 인도네시아인 학생과 재혼을 하고 나서 6살 때 자카르타로 이사 가서 10살 때까지 그 곳 학교를 다녔습니다. 그 후 그는 고교를 졸업할 때까지 호놀룰루에 있는 외갓집에서 살았습니다. 그는 엘 에이에 있는 2년제 악시덴털 칼리지를 다녔고, 그 후 컬럼비아 대학에 편입하여 국제관계론을 전공으로 하며 정치학과를 졸업했습니다.

끝으로, 직장 동료 중 한 명이 낮은 기온과 강풍 및 높은 파도로 인하여 태안반도의 기름 덩어리 제거 작업이 얼마나 어려운지를 알려주는 글을 사진과 함께 보내왔습니다. 그가 행한 봉사활동의 백미는 그가 딸들을 포함한 가족과 함께 거기에 갔으며, 그 일을 하기 위해 자신의 휴가를 사용했다는 점입니다.

이 일은 해마다 “남을 도우자”가 미국인들의 신년 각오 탑 텐 리스트에 오르고 있다는 점을 상기시켜줍니다.

[사랑의 순환]

그는 길 가에서 어쩔 줄 모르고 서있는 노부인을 하마터면 보지 못 할 뻔했습니다. 하지만, 어둑한 햇빛 아래에서도 그는 그 부인이 도움을 필요로 한다는 것을 알 수 있었습니다. 그래서 그는 부인의 벤즈 차 앞에 자신의 차를 세우고 차에서 내렸습니다. 그가 부인에게 다가 갔을 때 그의 (낡은 차) 폰티악은 (시동을 끗는 데도) 아직 퍼드덕거리고 있었습니다.

그가 얼굴에 미소를 띠고 있었지만, 부인은 걱정이 되었습니다. 한 시간이 넘게 흐르도록 아무도 도와주려고 차를 세우지 않았는 데… 그가 해치려는 건 아닌지? 그는 안전한 사람 같아 보이지 않았고, 가난하고 굶주려 보였습니다. 그는 부인이 추운 데 차 밖에 서서 겁을 먹고 있다는 것을 알 수 있었습니다. 그는 부인이 어떤 감정인지 알았습니다.

그는 부인에게 말을 했습니다. “부인, 전 부인을 도와 드리려 왔습니다. 따뜻한 차 안에서 기다리시지요. 그런데, 제 이름은 브라이언입니다.”

그런데, 부인은 타이어가 펑크 났을 뿐이었습니다만, 늙은 부인으로선 그건 큰 일이었습니다. 브라이언은 차 밑으로 기어들어가 잭을 놓을 곳을 찾았고, 손가락 한 두 군데가 까졌습니다. 곧 그는 타이어를 교환할 수 있었습니다. 하지만, 그의 몸은 더러워졌고, 손을 다쳤습니다. 그가 나사를 조이고 있을 때 부인은 창문을 내리고 그에게 말을 걸어 왔습니다. 부인은 그에게 자신은 세인트 루이스에 사는 데 그냥 지나치는 길이었다고 말했습니다. 부인은 그가 자신을 도와주러 와준 데 대하여 어떻게 감사해야 할지 몰라 했습니다.

브라이언은 부인의 차 트렁크를 닫으며 그냥 미소만 지었습니다. 부인은 그에게 얼마를 주면 되는지 물었습니다. 부인으로서는 얼마를 달라고 하든 상관없었습니다. 부인은 벌써 그가 차를 세우지 않았더라면 일어 났을 끔찍한 일들을 생각해봤습니다.

브라이언은 결코 돈을 받을 생각은 하지 않았습니다. 그에게 이쯤은 일도 아니었습니다. 이것은 어려운 처지에 있는 누군가를 돕는 것으로서 하느님은 과거에 많은 사람들이 그에게 도움을 줬다는 사실을 알고 계십니다. 그는 평생을 그렇게 살아왔으며, 다르게 행동한다는 것은 결코 생각하지 못 했습니다. 그는 부인에게 만약 부인이 진정으로 그에게 보답을 하고 싶다면, 다음에 부인이 도움이 필요한 사람을 만날 때 그 사람에게 필요한 도움을 주도록 하라고 말하고, 브라이언은 “… 그리고 절 생각해주세요.”하고 덧붙였습니다.

그는 부인이 시동을 걸고 차를 몰고 갈 때까지 기다렸습니다. 춥고 음울한 날이었지만, 집을 향하여 석양 속으로 사라져 가면서 그는 기분이 좋았습니다.

길을 따라 몇 마일을 가다가 부인은 작은 카페를 보았습니다. 부인은 뭘 좀먹고 집으로 가는 마지막 여정을 출발하기 전에 추위도 떨칠 겸 안으로 들어 갔습니다. 그 곳은 우중충한 식당이었습니다. 식당 밖에는 낡은 휘발유 펌프 두 개가 있었습니다. 전체적으로 부인에게 익숙한 풍경은 아니었습니다. 현금 지급기는 (손님이 없어) 마치 실직한 배우의 전화기 같이 (열고 닫을 때 나는) 소리를 자주 내지 못 했습니다.

웨이트레스가 와서 깨끗한 타올을 꺼내 부인의 젖은 의자를 닦았습니다. 그녀는 상냥한 미소, 하루 종일 서서 일 하고도 지워지지 않는 그러한 미소를 지니고 있었습니다. 부인은 웨이트레스가 거의 임신 팔 개월인 것을 알았지만, 그녀는 결코 고달프다고 태도를 바꾸지 않았습니다.

늙은 부인은 그토록 가진 게 없는 사람이 어떻게 낯선 사람에게 그토록 (미소를) 줄 수 있는지 생각했습니다. 그리고선 부인은 브라이언을 기억했습니다.

부인이 식사를 끝내고 웨이트레스가 부인이 낸 백 달러의 거스름돈을 가지러 가자 부인은 바로 문밖으로 빠져나갔습니다. 웨이트레스가 돌아 왔을 때에는 부인은 가고 없었습니다. 부인이 어디 있을 지 생각하고 있을 때 그녀는 냅킨에 무슨 글이 쓰여 있고 그 밑에 100불 지폐 4장이 있는 것을 봤습니다. 부인이 쓴 글을 읽었을 때 그녀의 눈에는 눈물이 고였습니다. 그것은 이렇게 적혀 있었습니다. “당신은 내게 부담을 갖지 말아요. 나도 그랬으니까요. 내가 당신을 도와주듯 언젠가 어떤 사람이 날 도와줬어요. 당신이 진정으로 내게 보답하고 싶으면, 이렇게 하세요. 이러한 사랑의 고리가 당신에게서 멈추지 않도록 하세요.”

그 날 밤 직장에서 집으로 돌아와 침대에 누운 그녀는 그 돈과 그 부인이 쓴 글에 대하여 생각해봤습니다. (그런데) 그 부인이 자기와 남편이 필요한 돈이 얼마인지를 어떻게 알았을까? 다음 달 출산 예정으로서 사정이 어렵게 되어 있었습니다. 그녀는 남편이 얼마나 걱정을 하는지 알았으며, 그녀 곁에 누워 자고 있는 남편에게 그녀는 부드러운 키스를 하며 달콤하고 낮은 목소리로 속삭였습니다. “이제 걱정 말아요; 사랑해요, 브라이언.”

변호사: 의사 선생님, 시체 검시를 하기 전에 맥박을 재봤습니까?
증인: 아니요.

변호사: 혈압은 재 봤습니까?
증인: 아니요.

변호사: 호흡은 재 봤습니까?
증인: 아니요.

변호사: 그럼, 당신이 검시를 시작했을 때 환자가 살아 있었을 가능성은 있습니까?
증인: 아니요.

변호사: 선생님, 어떻게 그토록 확신을 할 수 있습니까?
증인: 왜냐하면 그의 뇌가 병에 든 채 제 책상 위에 놓여 있었으니까요.

변호사: 하지만, 그럼에도 불구하고 여전히 환자가 살아 있었을 수 없습니까?
증인: 예, 그가 살아서 변호사를 하고 있었을 가능성은 있습니다.
