Dear all,

Good Friday morning!

We may recall when the hallway to the Seoul Railway metro station was so packed with the homeless in stenchy rags lying on a dirty blanket or on a few sheets of newspapers, that passers-by could hardly find a way out. Cigarette buts and empty bottles of distilled spirits or soju spread here and there around them. The wintry wind blowing at that time was awfully cold. It was December, 1997, and people called this difficult time the IMF crisis.

The IMF and the World Bank staff acted like occupationers by demanding the dejected Korean government officials to raise interest rates to an exorbitantly high double-digit level, to allow free-fall of exchange rates, to disband chaebols, to sell off minimum of two local banks that could not meet the BIS capital adequacy ratio, and etc. The rationale underlying their demand was that the market is the answer to everything and that it would certainly heal itself.

Now everybody knows that the economic calamity befell the U.S. like a perfect storm such as rising energy and commodity prices, credit markets in turmoil, creeping inflation, slouching dollar, a housing market in crisis with sagging home values, and stock markets in descent. Reflecting the current economic abyss, the U.S. government reported eating at home increased last year for the first time since 2001 and more than that, grown children in their thirties to even fifties are moving back in with Mom and Dad to save money or after losing a job.

As a way to heal the ailing market, the U.S. Fed cut the fed funds rate to 2.25% from 5.25% in addition to direct injection of funds and, finally, on March 16th it rescued Bear Stearns and agreed to lend directly to other brokers. Such a rescue is obviously against its rule book written on market economy.

The measures the U.S. authorities have taken in addressing their issues are 180 degrees different from what they prescribed to us during the so-called IMF crisis. Some economists declared ¡°March 16th, 2008¡± as ¡°the day the dream of global market capitalism died.¡± Some said they no longer believe in the market¡¯s self-healing power. Some decried Ben that he should have let the U.S. economy suffer for a while for the market rebound and that the economic downturn would be just prolonged.

The Perfect Storm, a true-story-based movie starring George Clooney as Captain Billy Tyne and Diane Lane, strikes me. Captain Tyne heads out into the North Atlantic with a handful of ragged Glouchester fishermen in the hopes of making a lucrative catch. The trip is a gamble. They head to the dreaded Flemish Cap - an area of ocean noted as much for its bad weather as it is for its good fish. They encounter a perfect storm, the simultaneous occurrence of different storms, and their fate is left in your imagination.

I hope that Ben Bernanke, the U.S. Fed chairman, would not become a Captain Tyne and the economic and financial difficulties Ben is facing would not be a perfect storm, either.

Have a wonderful weekend in the capricious spring weather!

Hank

[A Child¡¯s Angel]

Once upon a time there was a child ready to be born. So one day he asked God: ¡°They tell me that you are sending me to Earth tomorrow, but how am I going to live there, being so small and helpless?¡±

And God answered, ¡°I chose an angel for you. She will be waiting for you and will take care of you.¡±

¡°But here, in Heaven, all I ever do is sing and smile and laugh. That¡¯s enough for me to be happy.¡±

¡°Your angel will sing for you and will smile for you every day. And you will feel your angel¡¯s love and be happy.¡±

¡°And how am I going to be able to understand when people talk to me if I don¡¯t know the language that men speak?¡±

¡°Your angel will speak to you using the sweetest, most beautiful words you will ever hear; and with much patience and care, your angel will teach you how to speak.¡±

¡°And what am I going to do when I want to talk to You?¡±

¡°Your angel will place your hands together and will teach you how to pray.¡±

¡°I¡¯ve heard that on Earth there are bad men. Who will protect me?¡±

¡°Your angel will defend you, even if it means risking her life.¡±

¡°But I will be sad because I will not see You anymore.¡±

¡°Your angel will talk to you about Me, and will teach you the way for you to come back to Me, though I will always be beside you.¡±

At that moment there was much peace in Heaven. Voices from Earth could already be heard, and the child asked softly, ¡°God, if I am about to leave now, would you please tell me my angel¡¯s name?¡±

¡°You will call your angel Mommy.¡±

[Gates Gets Punishment]

Bill Gates suddenly dies and finds himself face to face with God. God stood over Bill Gates and said, ¡°Well Bill, I¡¯m really confused on this one. It¡¯s a tough decision; I¡¯m not sure whether to send you to Heaven or Hell. After all, you helped society enormously by putting a computer in almost every home in America, yet you also created that ghastly Windows ¡®95 among other indiscretions. I believe I¡¯ll do something I¡¯ve never done before; I¡¯ll let you decide where you want to go.¡±

Bill pushed up his glasses, looked up at God and replied, ¡°Could you briefly explain the difference between the two?¡± Looking slightly puzzled, God said, ¡°Better yet, why don¡¯t I let you visit both places briefly, then you can make your decision. Which do you choose to see first, Heaven or Hell?¡±

Bill played with his pocket protector for a moment, then looked back at God and said, ¡°I think I¡¯ll try Hell first.¡± So, with a flash of lightning and a cloud of smoke, Bill Gates went to Hell.

When he materialized in Hell, Bill looked around. It was a beautiful and clean place, a bit warm, with sandy beaches and tall mountains, clear skies, pristine water, and beautiful women frolicking about. A smile came across Bill's face as he took in a deep breath of the clean air. ¡°This is great,¡± he thought, ¡°If this is Hell, I can¡¯t wait to see heaven.¡±

Within seconds of his thought, another flash of lightning and a cloud of smoke appeared, and Bill was off to Heaven. Heaven was a place high above the clouds, where angels were drifting about playing their harps and singing in a beautiful chorus. It was a very nice place, Bill thought, but not as enticing as Hell.

Bill looked up, cupped his hands around his mouth and yelled for God and Bill Gates was sent to Hell for eternity.

Time passed, and God decided to check on the late billionaire to see how he was progressing in Hell. When he got there, he found Bill Gates shackled to a wall in a dark cave amid bone thin men and tongues of fire, being burned and tortured by demons.

¡°So, how is everything going?¡± God asked.

Bill responded with a crackling voice filled with anguish and disappointment, ¡°This is awful! It's nothing like the Hell I visited the first time!! I can¡¯t believe this is happening! What happened to the other place....with the beaches and the mountains and the beautiful women?¡±

¡°That was the demo,¡± replied God.
