Like a train going off the tracks

When I tell people (that) I live in Korea, one of the most frequent questions I get is about whether K-Drama reflects real life. Do mothers-in-law really slap their sons-in-law in the face with Kimchi? Do all soldiers have time to leave their base in the middle of the day and visit their sweetheart in the hospital?

The disappointing truth is: no. Life in Korea is fun, but not as exciting as the movies.

Startups are similar; if your startup experience comes from reading books or online stories, it seems that startup life is an exciting roller coaster ride: you start a company with lots of passion, assemble a talented team and change the world through innovation and hard work.

If that¡¯s your perspective when you start your startup, you¡¯ll be as disappointed just as first-time visitors to Seoul realizing the average Cafe barista will not be falling in love with them any time soon.

Startup life has ups and downs, but it¡¯s much less safe (and less fun) than a roller-coaster. A better analogy would be a train riding on broken tracks. You constantly see the train going off the tracks and spend most of your time trying to get the train back on the tracks.

As soon as you gain some momentum, the tracks break again and the train goes off rails, and there you go again – putting the train back on the tracks.

Every startup founder knows by now that the daily routine involves lots of problems that need fixing. I¡¯d like to tell those founders that not only is this normal, but if you are not dealing with constant problems, with the train going off the tracks regularly and with patching holes in the dam – if instead things are calm and quiet, something is terribly wrong.

The opposite of passion is indifference, and apathy is quiet and calm. When everyone works together in an excited way, there are no conflict, but when no one is really working, there¡¯s no conflict either; fighting, issues and external problems that need fixing are an indication that things are happening.

Your job is to fix those problems but don¡¯t expect that it will stay fixed. As you grow, there will be other problems. That¡¯s just how it is.

Korean startup founders often try to compare themselves to large and successful companies: that¡¯s almost always a bad idea. In the calm versus conflict matter, comparison to a large company is again a mistake.

Startups try to master the art of the impossible: it is trying to do something that hasn¡¯t yet been done, with insufficient resources. To do it you have to break the rules, and when breaking the rules you may break other things. It¡¯s only natural.

What¡¯s more, the goal of a large company is first to keep what they have and only second to try and grow. A startup should not strive to stay in place; by definition it needs to grow or die, and that means stability is contrary to its basic needs. Stability brings calm; what your startup needs is less stability and more conflict.

Startup founder, look around you. Are things constantly breaking and requiring you to fix them? If so, welcome to the world of conflict, and don¡¯t worry; it¡¯s when things start to get calm that you should really check to see what¡¯s wrong.
