Dear all,

Good morning!

European and Asian stock markets, including Seoul, have rallied since Tuesday in the wake of Wall Street¡¯s surge spurred by the U.S. Federal Reserve¡¯s larger-than-expected interest rate cut by a half percentage point. The move aims at keeping the financial market turmoil from causing a recession in the American economy. People are wondering if the current euphoria will be just a passing relief and what the Fed¡¯s next step will be.

Brisk economic growth and overflowing liquidity, mostly from emerging economies, propelled an almost never-ending rise of home prices over the past decade. This made the average Americans, who could not afford long-term monthly payments or whose credit records were not good enough for a 30-year mortgage loan, fret about hopping on the bandwagon to buy their dream home. According to traditional measures they had to wait until they could afford to make the leap.

However, not only mortgage lenders¡¯ infectious greed helped contrive structured mortgage products for such people, but speculative investors including hedge funds could buy and sell such products in the market. These sub-prime loans are known in the trade as 2/28 mortgages. The interest rates borrowers pay are fixed at relatively low rates for the first 2 years (e.g., 5.45%) as initial teaser rates. They then jump to higher rates in the next 28 years. As far as home prices remained on the rise, they didn¡¯t need to worry about a jump in mortgage payments during the post-teaser rate period because the increased equity in the home would allow them to refinance.

Problems arose with home prices flat or down. Borrowers couldn¡¯t afford payments at steeply higher rates and refinancing was not available either, due to the diminished value of their home. The rising number of foreclosure filings scared speculative investors away. The mortgage market in turn dried up to force some lenders out of business.

The Fed¡¯s action may provide some help but won¡¯t solve problems in the ailing housing market where a glut of housing inventory is equivalent to 10 months of sales. A rate cut simply cannot resolve investment losses of past mistakes or greed by banks, investors, hedge funds, and lenders. The credit crunch was caused by companies losing money, not because of high interest rates. Some economists, therefore, are opposed to Fed¡¯s interest rate cut which in their eyes subsidizes or bails out excessive risk-taking and poor financial decisions.

In cases of WorldCom and Enron in 2002, investors turned to the companies¡¯ banks such as CSFB, Goldman Sachs, UBS, Bank of America, and accounting firm, Arthur Andersen. In case of the 1994 Orange County bankruptcy, S&P refunded its rating fees. This time investors may sue rating agencies since bankers routinely pulled out deals until the rating agencies gave them investment grade status. The SEC also steps up its oversight of such firms, particularly because a portion of their revenue comes from the companies that pay them for their ratings.

Now that more investors are beginning to talk recession, some economists already predict Fed¡¯s further rate cuts. However, the stock market, one of the best leading economic indicators, will tell us in the next few weeks about the U.S. economic outlook. Of course, we need to pay attention to economic data on inflation as well.

Almost a week-long Korean Thanksgiving for family reunion is near at hand. However, there are many dejected people around us living a desolate life without family members¡¯ care.

Happy holiday and wish you Godspeed.

Hank

[The Four Wives]

There was a rich merchant who had 4 wives. He loved the 4th wife most and adorned her with rich robes and treated her to delicacies. He took great care of her and gave her nothing but the best.

He also loved the 3rd wife very much. He¡¯s very proud of her and always wanted to show off her to his friends. However, the merchant is always in great fear that she might run away with some other men.

He loved his 2nd wife, too. She is a very considerate person, always patient and in fact is the merchant¡¯s confidante. Whenever the merchant faced some problems, he always turned to his 2nd wife and she would always help him out and tide him through difficult times.

Now, the merchant¡¯s 1st wife is a very loyal partner and has made great contributions in maintaining his wealth and business as well as taking care of the household. However, the merchant did not love the first wife and although she loved him deeply, he hardly took notice of her.

One day, the merchant fell ill. Before long, he knew that he was going to die soon. He thought of his luxurious life and told himself, ¡°Now I have 4 wives with me. But when I die, I¡¯ll be alone. How lonely I¡¯ll be!¡±

Thus, he asked the 4th wife, ¡°I loved you most, endowed you with the finest clothing and showered great care over you. Now that I¡¯m dying, will you follow me and keep me company?¡± ¡°No way!¡± replied the 4th wife and she walked away without another word.

The answer cut like a sharp knife right into the merchant¡¯s heart. The sad merchant then asked the 3rd wife, ¡°I have loved you so much for all my life. Now that I¡¯m dying, will you follow me and keep me company?¡± ¡°No!¡± replied the 3rd wife. ¡°Life is so good over here! I¡¯m going to remarry when you die!¡± The merchant's heart sank and turned cold.

He then asked the 2nd wife, ¡°I always turned to you for help and you¡¯ve always helped me out. Now I need your help again. When I die, will you follow me and keep me company?¡± ¡°I¡¯m sorry, I can¡¯t help you out this time!¡± replied the 2nd wife. ¡°At the very most, I can only send you to your grave.¡± The answer came like a bolt of thunder and the merchant was devastated.

Then a voice called out: ¡°I¡¯ll leave with you. I¡¯ll follow you no matter where you go.¡± The merchant looked up and there was his 1st wife. She was so skinny, almost like she suffered from malnutrition. Greatly grieved, the merchant said, ¡°I should have taken much better care of you while I could have!¡±

Actually, we all have 4 wives in our lives.

a. The 4th wife is our body. No matter how much time and effort we lavish in making it look good, it¡¯ll leave us when we die.

b. Our 3rd wife? Our possessions, status and wealth. When we die, they all go to others.

c. The 2nd wife is our family and friends. No matter how close they had been there for us when we¡¯re alive, the furthest they can stay by us is up to the grave.

d. The 1st wife is in fact our soul, often neglected in our pursuit of material, wealth and sensual pleasure.

Guess what? It is actually the only thing that follows us wherever we go. Perhaps it¡¯s a good idea to cultivate and strengthen it now rather than to wait until we're on our deathbed to lament.

[Defamation of Character]

A man was sued by a woman for defamation of character. She charged that he had called her a pig. They went to court, where he was found guilty and fined.

After the trial he asked the judge, ¡°This means I can¡¯t call Mrs. Johnson a pig?¡± The judge said that was true.

¡°Does this mean I can¡¯t call a pig ¡®Mrs. Johnson¡¯?¡± the man asked. The judge replied that he could indeed call a pig Mrs. Johnson with no fear of legal action.

The man looked directly at Mrs. Johnson and said, ¡°Good afternoon, Mrs. Johnson.¡±
