Dear all,

Good Friday morning!

Yesterday Forbes disclosed the world¡¯s billionaires, among the listed, naming Warren Buffett the richest man on earth. News that will surely catch people¡¯s attention! Bill Gates is now ranked third in the world by ceding even the second-richest throne to Mexican telecom tycoon Carlos Slim.

The most notable things from the news are as follows:

Firstly, the number of billionaires reached 1,125 and Americans account for 42% and 37% of the total number and total wealth, respectively. To our surprise Russia is the 2nd country with 87 billionaires behind the U.S., Germany with 59, India with 53, and China with 42 billionaires, which ranked 3rd, 4th and 5th, respectively. Surprisingly enough, Turkey shared the sixth rank with U.K. with a whopping number of 35 billionaires and 16 out of the total rich people that were self-made. In the rank following is Hong Kong with 26 billionaires.

Secondly, newcomers totaled 226; seventy-seven out of them being Americans, half of whom made fortunes in finance industry. Russia produced 35, China 28 and India 19 newcomers, respectively.

Thirdly, Forbe¡¯s world¡¯s billionaire list shows most billionaire women were able to enjoy such a status just by inheriting wealth of their family. Three exceptions are Meg Whitman, CEO of eBay, Zhang Xin CEO of SOHO China, and Oprah Winfrey.

Fourthly, Young billionaires under the age of 40 amounted to 50. 25 of them are newcomers and 68% of them, or 34 young billionaires, built their fortune from scratch mostly in tech and finance industries. The youngest person is 23-year-old Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook. Like Bill Gates, he, too, is a drop-out after founding the social networking site from his Harvard dorm room.

Other notable self-made young billionaires are 38-year-old Kenneth Griffin, CEO of hedge fund Citadel Investment Group, 34-year-old John Arnold, CEO of hedge fund Centaurus Energy, 34-year-old Indian Sameer Gehlaut, CEO of online brokerage Indiabulls, and 39-year-old Chinese Robin Li, CEO of search engine Baidu.com.

Last but not least, like fairy tales such as Cinderella and Snow White, 757 people or 67% people rose from poverty to wealth, mostly in the developed nations, including the U.S. and in Russia and China among developing nations. We can hardly find Cinderella stories in most developing nations.

Among 12 Korean billionaires Cha Yong-Keu, former CEO of Kazakhstan copper mining giant Kazakhmys, was the only self-made billionaire. All other Korean billionaires, of course, inherited their wealth.

From rags-to-riches list notables are: Ingvar Kamprad, CEO of Ikea, a Swedish hip-design furniture company targeting the cost-conscious. Kamprad peddled matches, fish, pens, Christmas cards and other items by bicycle as a teenager. As egalitarian as his brand, he never puts on suits, flies economy class and frequents cheap restaurants. His luxuries are the occasional nice cravat and Swedish fish roe.

Sheldon Adelson, a cab-driver¡¯s son, dropped out of New York City College to become a court reporter. He made a fortune by creating computer industry¡¯s marquee event, Comdex, in the mid-1980s and by selling the show to Softbank on the rise of IT boom in 1995. Like King Midas, everything he touched has turned into gold ever since.

Given the turbulence in the global stock markets, we¡¯ll see some losers and winners in the following year. However, Warren Buffett may still hold tight to the honorable title by riding the constantly surging price of his company, Berkshire Hathaway¡¯s stock. The secret of his success: Berkshire has invested mostly in well-known insurance, jewelry, utilities and food companies. Guess what the common denominator of his investments is?

Have a wonderful weekend, you all!

Hank

[Great Value in Disaster]

Thomas Edison¡¯s laboratory was virtually destroyed by fire in December, 1914. Although the damage exceeded $2 million, the buildings were only insured for $238,000 because they were made of concrete and thought to be fireproof.

Much of Edison¡¯s life¡¯s work went up in spectacular flames that December night. At the height of the fire, Edison¡¯s 24-year-old son, Charles, frantically searched for his father among the smoke and debris.

He finally found him, calmly watching the scene, his face glowing in the reflection, his white hair blowing in the wind.

¡°My heart ached for him,¡± said Charles.

¡°He was 67 - no longer a young man - and everything was going up in flames. When he saw me, he shouted, ¡®Charles, where¡¯s your mother?¡¯¡±

When I told him I didn¡¯t know, he said, ¡°Find her. Bring her here. She will never see anything like this as long as she lives.¡±

The next morning, Edison looked at the ruins and said, ¡°There is great value in disaster. All our mistakes are burned up. Thank God we can start anew.¡±

Three weeks after the fire, Edison managed to deliver his first phonograph.

[Small Farm in Ohio]

A man owned a small farm in Ohio.

The Ohio State Wage and Hour Department claimed he was not paying proper wages to his help and sent an agent out to interview him.

¡°I need a list of your employees and how much you pay them,¡± demanded the agent.

¡°Well,¡± replied the farmer, ¡°there¡¯s my farm hand who¡¯s been with me for 3 years. I pay him $500 a week plus free room and board.

The cook has been here for 18 months, and I pay her $350 per week plus free room and board.

Then there¡¯s the half-wit who works about 18 hours every day and does about 90% of all the work around here.

He makes about $50 per week, pays his own room and board. I buy him a bottle of bourbon every Saturday night. And he also sleeps with my wife occasionally.¡±

¡°That¡¯s the guy I want to talk to --- the half-wit,¡± said the agent.

¡°That would be me,¡± replied the farmer.
