Dear all,

Good morning and Happy Thanksgiving to those in the US!

Airports must be jammed with travelers during this holiday period. If a trip is unavoidable, try to check all luggages so that you can breeze through airport checkpoints. If you travel with wrapped packages, a security officer may unwrap to inspect them. Therefore, make it sure to wrap gifts once you have reached your destination.

Further, if you don¡¯t want security officers to stop you to hand-search your body and carry-on bags, I suggest you take off your shoes, outerwear including jacket, and belt before walking through checkpoints. Ta-dah! You will whistle with joy. No hassle.

In the United States, Thanksgiving, which falls on Thursday, is part of a four-day-long weekend and most workplaces are closed on the following day, Black Friday.

As you know, Business Week¡¯s current cover story portends the U.S. consumer crunch whether the U.S. economy is in recession or not. The writer contends consumer spending has been unstoppable for the past 25 years despite a falling savings rate and a rising debt burden. However, the sub-prime crisis is ending the ¡®borrow-and-buy boom¡¯ that people created with credit.

The story may strike a chord with many readers. Dr. Joseph Stiglitz, a Nobel Prize winner in economics at Columbia University, openly blames Alan Greenspan, former FRB Chair, for pushing out too much liquidity at the wrong time.

After a weak back-to-school season, and a disappointing September and October, all eyes turn to Black Friday as a canary in a coal mine. Retail is serious business in the U.S. economy, given that the last 2 months of the year account for 20% of total annual sales, particularly for department stores, closer to 24% and that consumer spending accounts for two thirds of U.S. GDP.

Some disappointing signs for holiday retail are already seen: Fed Ex warns that shipping volumes are down; Starbucks reports its first ever decline in same store traffic.

Still, on Black Friday major retailers hope to see their financial ledgers go from being in the red to being in the black by offering door buster items such as laptops, flat-panel televisions, MP3 players, etc. at deeply discounted prices from as early as 6 AM. The big sales on Black Friday have become a post-Thanksgiving tradition with participants such as Bloomingdales, Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Giorgio Fedon, and Sharper Image, let alone Wal-Mart, Target, Best Buy, and Staples.

Watch out for a crowd¡¯s stampede over your felled body if you accidentally stand in a long Black Friday line. If you survive the mad dash for shopping spree, you will be all smiles.

Happy holiday!

Hank

[A Brother¡¯s Love]

Like any good mother, when Karen found out that another baby was on the way she did what she could to help her 3-year-old son, Michael, prepare for a new sibling. They found out that the new baby was going to be a girl, and day after day, night after night, Michael sang to his sister in mommy's tummy. He was building a bond of love with his little sister before he even met her.

The pregnancy progressed normally for Karen, an active member of The Panther Creek United Methodist Church in Morristown, Tennessee.

In time, the labor pains came. Soon it was every five minutes, every three, every minute. But serious complications arose during delivery and Karen found herself in hours of labor. Would a C-section be required? Finally, after a long struggle, Michael's little sister was born. But she was in very serious condition. With a siren howling in the night, the ambulance rushed the infant to the neonatal intensive care unit at St. Mary¡¯s Hospital, Knoxville, Tennessee.

The days inched by. The little girl got worse. The pediatrician had to tell the parents, ¡°There is very little hope. Be prepared for the worst.¡± Karen and her husband contacted a local cemetery about a burial plot. They had fixed up a special room in their house for their new baby but now they found themselves having to plan for a funeral. Michael, however, kept begging his parents to let him see his sister.

¡°I want to sing to her,¡± he kept saying. Week two in intensive care looked as if a funeral would come before the week was over. Michael kept nagging about singing to his sister, but kids are never allowed in Intensive care. Karen decided to take Michael whether they liked it or not! If he didn¡¯t see his sister right then, he may never see her alive. She dressed him in an oversized scrub suit and marched him into ICU. He looked like a walking laundry basket. But the head nurse recognized him as a child and bellowed, ¡°Get that kid out here now! No children are allowed.¡±

Karen, the usually mild-mannered lady, glared steel-eyes right into the head nurse¡¯s face with her lips a firm line and rose up strong, ¡°He is not leaving until he sings to his sister!¡±

Karen towed Michael to his sister¡¯s bedside. He gazed at the tiny infant losing the battle to live. After a moment, he began to sing. In the pure-hearted voice of a 3-year-old, Michael sang: ¡°You are my sunshine, my only sunshine. You make me happy when skies are gray ¡¦¡± The baby girl instantly seemed to respond. The pulse rate began to calm down and become steady.

¡°Keep on singing, Michael,¡± encouraged Karen with tears in her eyes. ¡°You never know, dear, how much I love you. Please, don¡¯t take my sunshine away¡¦.¡± As Michael sang to his sister, the baby¡¯s ragged and strained breathing became as smooth as a kitten¡¯s purr.

¡°Keep on singing, sweetheart!!!¡±

¡°The other night, dear, as I lay sleeping, I dreamed I held you in my arms. . .¡± Michael¡¯s little sister began to relax at rest and healing rest seemed to sweep over her. ¡°Keep on singing, Michael.¡± Tears had now conquered the face of the bossy head nurse. Karen glowed.

¡°You are my sunshine, my only sunshine. Please, don¡¯t take my sunshine away¡¦¡±

The next day... the very next day... the little girl was well enough to go home! Woman¡¯s Day Magazine called it ¡°The Miracle of a Brother¡¯s Song.¡± The medical staff just called it a miracle. Karen called it a miracle of God¡¯s love! (A True story)

NEVER GIVE UP ON THE PEOPLE YOU LOVE. LOVE IS SO INCREDIBLY POWERFUL.

[Einstein¡¯s Chauffer]

This is a true life anecdote about Albert Einstein, and his theory of relativity.

After having propounded his famous theory, Albert Einstein would tour the various Universities in the United States, delivering lectures. Wherever he went, he was always accompanied by his faithful chauffer, Harry, who would attend each of these lectures while being seated in the back row. One fine day, after having finished a lecture, Einstein was coming out of the auditorium into his vehicle, Harry addressed him and said, ¡°Professor Einstein, I¡¯ve heard your lecture on Relativity so many times that if I were ever given the opportunity, I would be able to deliver it to perfection myself!¡±

¡°Very well,¡± replied Einstein, ¡°I¡¯m going to Dartmouth next week. They don¡¯t know me there. You can deliver the lecture as Einstein, and I¡¯ll take your place as Harry!¡±

And so it went to be... Harry delivered the lecture to perfection, without a word out of place, while Einstein sat in the back row playing ¡°chauffer,¡± and enjoying a snooze for a change.

Just as Harry was descending from the podium, however, one of the research assistants intercepted him, and began to ask him a question on the theory of relativity.... one that involved a lot of complex calculations and equations. Harry replied to the assistant ¡°The answer to this question is very simple! In fact, it¡¯s so simple that I¡¯m going to let my chauffer answer it!¡±
