Good Friday morning!


It is highly regrettable that my tight scheduled trip to the US over the past two weeks precluded me from communicating with you. Different from the past when I was on a business trip, I was too busy to write Friday e-mails on this occasion.

In the past, Americans assumed that Koreans they meet are from South Korea. To my surprise, however, I could notice that Americans were now inquisitive about the origin of Koreans they meet. From South or North? Almost all Americans I conversed with, including professionals in the line of asset management business were quite anxious to know if North Korea would truly dismantle its nuclear weapon’s program.
Some of them stated that it’s just a matter of when, not if, that North Korean regime would collapse. They foretold that the implosion of North Korea would be accelerated by the width and depth of North Korean John Citizen’s daily exposure to market economy on their own soil which had been propelled by unbearable and continuing hunger and poverty beyond control.

“Hey, where does the money for such a day come from? We can’t afford it.”


“It’s the economy, stupid! Hello??”

As I learned in a class of comparative politics in the US long time back, a selection of a national leader such as the president always reflects voters’ current mind-flow into which past, present and future political, economic and social situations are consciously or unconsciously factored. This time, it’s due to the economy, not the politics or a generational duel that South Korea elected a person with business experience as its new president, as everybody is aware.

The outcome of presidential election reminds me of the abrupt departure for London of my Canadian friend, who spent a few days with me on a conference in California. He said he simply wished to fume his craze for Led Zeppelin, which has lurked in his heart since the late 1970s, at their live show in the O2 arena in London on Monday night, December 10. He said his friend in New York would fly to London for the show. Nostalgia for Led Zeppelin forced their maniacs to flock to the arena from four corners of the earth, including New Zealand.

The Led Zeppelin performance was made possible because the 63-year-old Robert Plant, the 59-year-old Jimmy Page and the 61-year-old John Paul Jones, original members of Led Zeppelin, were joined by the 41-year-old Jason Bonham, the son of drummer John Bonham, whose death at age 32 in 1980 precipitated the group’s break-up. The concert was reportedly highlighted by “Stairway to Heaven,” the most famous rock song of all time. It is even played at weddings and funerals.

“There’s a lady who’s sure all that glitters is gold.
And she’s buying a stairway to heaven.

It is well known that "buying" in this lyrics means "building" by means of buying construction materials. It may be possible to build a stairway to heaven based on economic growth.

Again, “it’s the economy!”

[A Man and His Dog]

A man and his dog were walking along a road. The man was enjoying the scenery, when it suddenly occurred to him that he was dead. He remembered dying, and that his faithful dog had been dead for many years. He wondered where the road was leading them.

After a while, they came to a high, white stone wall along one side of the road. It looked like fine marble. As he reached the wall, he saw a magnificent gate in the arch, and the street that led to the gate made from pure gold. He and the dog walked toward the gate, and as he got closer, he saw a man at a desk to one side.

When he was close enough, he called out, “Excuse me, where are we?”

“This is heaven, sir,” the man answered.

“Wow! Would you happen to have some water? We have traveled far,” the man said.

“Of course, sir. Come right in, and I’ll have some ice water brought right up.”

The man gestured, and the gate began to open.

“Can my friend,” gesturing toward his dog, “come in, too?” the traveler asked.

“I’m sorry, sir, but we don’t accept pets.”

The man thought a moment, remembering all the years this dog remained loyal to him and then turned back toward the road and continued the way he had been going. After another long walk he came to a plain dirt road, which led through a farm gate that looked as if it had never been closed. There was no fence. As he approached the gate, he saw a man inside, leaning against a tree and reading a book.

“Excuse me!” he called to the reader. “Do you have any water? We have traveled far.”

“Yes, sure, there’s a faucet over there.” The man pointed to a place that couldn’t be seen from outside the gate. “Come on in and help yourself.”

“How about my friend here?” the traveler gestured to his dog.

“There should be a bowl by the faucet; he is welcome to share.”

They went through the gate, and sure enough, there was an old-fashioned faucet with a bowl beside it. The traveler filled the bowl and took a long drink himself, then he gave some to the dog. When they were full, he and the dog walked back toward the man who was standing by the tree waiting for them.

“What do you call this place?” the traveler asked.

“This is heaven,” was the answer.

“Well, that’s confusing,” the traveler said. “The man down the road said that was heaven, too.”

“Oh, you mean the place with the gold street and pearly gates? Nope. That’s hell.”

“Doesn’t it make you mad for them to use your name like that?”

“No. We’re just happy that they screen out the folks who’d leave their best friends behind in exchange for material things.”

천국으로 가는 계단

여러분, 안녕하십니까? 금요일 아침입니다.

지난 2주간 제 미국 여행 스케줄이 빡빡하여 여러분과 커뮤니케이션을 하지 못 하게 된 점 대단히 유감스럽습니다. 과거 출장을 다닐 때와는 달리 이번에는 너무 바빠서 금요 메일을 쓸 수가 없었습니다.

과거에 미국인들은 자기들이 만나는 한국인들은 당연히 남한 출신일 것이라고 봤습니다. 그러나, 놀랍게도 이제 미국인들은 그들이 만나는 한국인이 어디 출신인지 궁금해하는 것을 알 수 있었습니다. 남한 출신인지, 북한 출신인지? 자산 운용업계의 프로페셔널 등 제가 얘기를 나눈 미국인들 거의 대부분은 북한이 진짜로 핵 무기 프로그램을 폐기할지 매우 궁금해 했습니다.

그들 가운데 일부는 북한 체제가 붕괴하는 것은 그렇게 될 것인가 아닌가의 문제가 아니라 단지 시간 문제일 뿐이라고 말했습니다. 견디기 힘들고 계속적인 굶주림과 가난 때문에 통제할 수 없도록 촉진되고 있는 북한 보통 사람들이 자기네 땅에서 일상적으로 접하고 있는 시장 경제의 폭과 깊이에 의하여 북한의 내부 붕괴는 가속화될 것이라고 그들은 예측했습니다.

“그런데, 그런 날에 대비한 돈은 어디서 생기는 겁니까? 우린 그것을 감당할 수 없어요.”

“이 바보야, 문제는 경제야! 알겠어?”

제가 오래 전 미국에서 비교 정치학 수업에서 배운 것처럼 대통령과 같은 국가 지도자의 선택은 항상 과거, 현재, 미래의 정치적, 경제적, 사회적 상황을 알게 모르게 고려한 유권자들 마음의 현재의 흐름을 반영하는 것입니다. 모두 알다시피, 이번에 한국이 새 대통령으로 사업 경험을 가진 사람을 뽑은 것은 정치나 세대간 대결이 아닌 경제 때문입니다.

이번 대통령 선거 결과는 캘리포니아에서 있었던 컨퍼런스에서 저와 함께 며칠을 보냈던 캐나다 친구가 갑자기 런던으로 떠났던 일이 생각나게 합니다. 그 친구는 12월 10일 월요일 밤 런던 O2 경기장에서 공연되는 레드 체플린의 라이브 쇼우에서 1970년대 후반이래 그의 가슴 속에 남아 있었던 그들에 대한 자신의 열광을 뿜어 내고 싶을 뿐이라고 말했습니다. 그 친구는 뉴욕에 사는 친구도 그 쇼우를 보러 런던에 온다고 말했습니다. 레드 체플린에 대한 향수가 뉴질랜드 등 세계 방방곡곡에서 그들에게 미친 사람들을 O2 경기장으로 몰려들게 했습니다.

레드 체플린의 공연은 1980년에 32세의 나이로 사망하고 그 때문에 그룹 해체에 까지 이르게 되었던 드러머 존 본햄의 41세 된 아들 제이슨 본햄이 레드 체플린의 창립 멤버 63세의 로버트 플랜트와 59세의 지미 페이지 및 61세의 존 폴 존스에 합류했기에 가능했습니다. 소문에 의하면, 레드 체플린의 공연은 전 시대에 걸쳐 가장 유명한 록 노래인 “천국으로 가는 계단”에 의해 절정에 달했다고 합니다. 그 노래는 심지어 결혼식장과 장례식장에서도 연주됩니다.

“번쩍이는 건 전부 금이라고 믿는 부인이 있습니다.
그리고 그 부인은 천국으로 가는 계단을 짓고 있습니다.

이 가사에서 “구입한다”는 것은 건축자재 구입을 통해 “짓는다”는 의미라는 것은 잘 알려진 사실입니다. 어쩌면 경제 성장을 바탕으로 천국으로 가는 계단을 짓는 것은 가능할지도 모르겠습니다.

다시 말하지만, “문제는 경제입니다!”

[한 남자와 그의 개]

한 남자와 그의 개가 길을 따라 걷고 있었습니다. 그 남자는 갑자기 죽게 되자 주변 경치를 즐기고 있었습니다. 그는 자신이 죽은사실과 여러 해 전에 그의 충직한 개가 죽은 사실을 기억합니다. 그들이 그 길을 따라가면 어디로 가게 될지 그는 궁금했습니다.

얼마 후 그들은 그 길의 한 쪽 면을 따라 세워진 커다랗고 흰 돌 벽에 이르게 되었습니다. 그것은 멋진 대리석처럼 보였습니다. 그 벽에 도착하자 그는 아치 모양의 웅장한 문을 보았고, 그 문에 이르는 길은 순금으로 만들어져 있었습니다. 그와 그의 개는 문을 향해 걸어 갔으며, 가까이 다가가자 그는 길 한쪽 켠 책상에 한 남자가 앉아 있는 것을 보았습니다. 충분히 가까워 지자 그는 소리쳐 물었습니다. “죄송하지만, 여기가 어딥니까?”

“여긴 천국입니다.” 그 남자가 대답했습니다.

“와! 혹시 물 좀 있습니까? 너무 먼 길을 왔어요.” 그 남자가 말했습니다.

“물론입지요. 들어 오십시오. 곧 냉수를 좀 갖다 드리지요.”

그 남자는 몸짓을 했고, 문은 열리기 시작했습니다.

“제 친구도” 그는 개를 향해 몸짓을 하며 “들어 갈 수 있지요?” 그 여행자가 물었습니다.

“미안하지만, 여기서는 개는 출입금집니다.”

그 남자는 잠시 생각에 잠겼다가 이 개가 그에게 충직했던 나날들을 기억하고는 길을 향해 되돌아서서 왔던 길을 계속 걸어갔습니다. 또 다른 긴 도보여행 끝에 그는 평평한 흙 길에 이르렀고, 그 길은 한 번도 닫힌 적이 없는 것처럼 보이는 농장 문으로 통했습니다. 거기엔 울타리도 없었습니다. 문에 다가가자 그는 안에서 한 남자가 나무에 기대어 책을 읽고 있는 것을 봤습니다.

“실례합니다!” 그는 책을 읽고 있는 그 사람을 불렀습니다. “물 좀 있습니까? 너무 먼 길을 왔어요.”

“예, 그럼요. 저기 수도꼭지가 있지요?” 그 남자는 문 밖에서는 볼 수 없는 곳을 가리켰습니다. “들어 와서 맘껏 마시세요.”

“여기 제 친구도 마셔도 되겠습니까?” 그 여행자가 그의 개를 몸짓으로 가리켰습니다.

“수도 꼭지 옆에 바가지가 있을 겁니다. 개와 같이 나눠 마셔도 좋습니다.”

그들은 그 문을 지나갔고, 틀림없이, 구식 수도꼭지와 그 옆에 바가지가 하나 있었습니다. 그 여행객은 바가지를 채워 자신이 먼저 오랫동안 마시고 난 후 개에게도 물을 줬습니다. 물을 가득 마시자 그 남자와 그의 개는 나무 옆에서 그들을 기다리며 서 있는 그 남자를 향해 되돌아 갔습니다.

“여기가 어딥니까?” 그 여행자가 물었습니다.

“여기는 천국입니다.” 그게 답이었습니다.

“그래요? 그 참 헷갈리네.” 그 여행자가 말했습니다. “저기 길 아래 남자가 거기도 천국이라고 말하던 데요.”

“아, 그 금으로 된 길에 진주로 장식한 문이 있는 곳 말입니까? 아니에요. 그곳은 지옥입니다.”

“그 사람들이 그렇게 당신네 이름을 쓰는 데 화가 안 납니까?”

“아닙니다. 우리는 그 사람들이 물질적인 것 때문에 제일 친한 친구들을 두고 가는 사람들을 골라내 주니까 좋습니다.”
