Dear all,

Good morning!

During the week many people were freaked. Asian stock markets had been smashed. European markets skidded. And, the US market barely recovered on Wednesday from an early morning dive thanks to the Fed¡¯s emergency easing of 75bp. Which way will markets move, up or down? Should we hold, move into cash, or take advantage of the serious dips?

Conventional wisdom tells us that equity investing ought to be avoided in the current environment. Threats of a recession in US and further implosion in the US credit markets suggest that the worse is still to come. That may well be the case.

However, conventional wisdom is often loaded with very little wisdom. Investors, who fall prey to the current market volatility, will suffer at the expense of those savvy investors who view the current volatility as an opening to buy cheap. SEC record shows that Warren Buffett has actively gobbled up shares in wonderful companies such as Burlington Northern, Anheuser-Bush and Swiss Re(insurance).

In this wayward market we may need to chew over the following investment fundamentals that can help us stay financially sound during good or bad times:

A. Don¡¯t invest any money in the stock market that you might need for the next five to seven years. If you¡¯re watching your son¡¯s next year college tuition evaporate before your eyes, it may cause a heart attack.

B. Diversify your investments by not putting all eggs in one basket. Easier said than done.

C. If it seems too good to be true, it is. If you have good reason to think irrational exuberance might be fueling an investment boom, look someplace else to put your money, not follow investment fad like sheep like purchasing tech stocks in the dot-com era and cashing in on rocketing home values.

D. Prepare for the worst-case scenario by building an emergency fund that can cover your regular expenses for three to six months in the event that you are one of those economic casualties. To be safer, add money to the fund for health-insurance premiums and child care.

E. Keep your debt at a manageable level. You can then have room to breathe, even if any economic blip has potential to hurt you.

Now, if our time horizon is more than a few months, we¡¯ll be ok. Let¡¯s give the business page of a newspaper a good rest for a few weeks or a few months or more. Relax by reading good books or watching good movies. The financial markets won¡¯t be in turmoil for good. The market will eventually change its course.

Forget everything, and have a good weekend!

Hank

[Live or Work]

Father was a hardworking man who delivered bread to support his wife and three children. After work he spent all his evenings attending classes, hoping to improve himself so that he could one day find a better paying job. Except for Sundays, Father hardly ate a meal together with his family. He worked and studied very hard because he wanted to provide his family with the best money could buy.

Whenever the family complained that he was not spending enough time with them, he reasoned that he was doing all this for them. But he often yearned to spend more time with his family.

The day came when the examination results were announced. To his joy, Father passed, and with distinctions, too! Soon after, he was offered a good job as a senior supervisor which paid handsomely.

Like a dream comes true, Father could now afford to provide his family with life¡¯s little luxuries like nice clothing, fine food and vacation abroad.

However, the family still did not get to see father for most of the week. He continued to work very hard, hoping to be promoted to the position of manager. In fact, to make himself a worthy candidate for the promotion, he enrolled for another course in the Open University.

Again, whenever the family complained that he was not spending enough time with them, he reasoned that he was doing all this for them. But he often yearned to spend more time with his family.

Father¡¯s hard work paid off and he was promoted. Jubilantly, he decided to hire a maid to relieve his wife from her domestic tasks. He also felt that their three-room flat was no longer big enough and that it would be nice for his family to be able to enjoy the facilities and comfort of a condominium.

Having experienced the rewards of his hard work many times before, Father resolved to further his studies. The family still did not get to see much of him. In fact, sometimes Father had to work on Sundays entertaining clients. Again, whenever the family complained that he was not spending enough time with them, he reasoned that he was doing all this for them. But he often yearned to spend more time with his family.

As expected, Father¡¯s hard work paid off again and he bought a beautiful condominium overlooking the sea-coast. On the first Sunday evening at their new home, Father declared to his family that he decided not to take anymore courses or pursue any more promotions. From then on he was going to devote more time to his family.

Father did not wake up the next day.
