Good Friday morning!

Last Sunday evening we helplessly watched in shock our iconic cultural treasure, the Namdaemun Gate in Seoul, collapse in fire on TV.

Next morning all remained silent not because of Monday morning stress but because they were too stupefied by the unexpected incident on our landmark.

Some said, “My heart is burning.” Some said, “My heart is aching.” Some shed an unstoppable stream of tears. Some threw an empty look into the sky.


The fire didn’t simply burn off the wooden structure of the 610-year-old Namdaemun but it took away intangible pride embedded in Korean souls. Now a throng of mourners from all over the nation form a long queue to offer respectful bows to its remains. In their eyes the gate still stands there boasting of its dignity.

What drove the gaunt old man to set fire to the special construction? He was reportedly very upset about the society per se since everybody, including the President’s Office showed sheer indifference to his complaint in association with the enforced sale of his house initiated by the construction of an apartment complex, not by his own commercial motive.

This incident reminds me of the notorious Oklahoma City bombing of 1995, which claimed 168 lives and left over 800 injured, and the unforgettable Virginia Tech massacre of last year, which claimed 33 lives including the murderer himself. Both incidents took place because both Timothy McVeigh and Seung-Hui Cho were quite mad at the society with or without warrant.

We should try hard to make our society with less social divide or own home divide, which may incur mentally unhealthy people’s wrath, to stem further occurrence of similar social hatred crimes?

This incident will remain in our history for good along with the restored Namdaemun gate.

[Small Gift]


The Reverend Stevens told of a couple who were celebrating their golden wedding anniversary. The husband was asked what the secret was to his successful marriage. The old gentleman answered with a story below.

His wife, Sarah, was the only girl he ever dated. He grew up in an orphanage and worked hard for everything he had. He never had time to date until Sarah swept him off his feet. Before he knew it she had managed to get him to ask her to marry him.

After they had said their vows on their wedding day, Sarah’s father took the new groom aside and handed him a small gift. He said, “Within this gift is all you really need to know to have a happy marriage.”

The nervous young man fumbled with the paper and ribbon until he got the package unwrapped. Within the box lay a large gold watch. With great care he picked it up. Upon close examination he saw etched across the face of the watch a prudent reminder he would see whenever he checked the time of day . . . words that, if heeded, held the secret to a successful marriage.

They were, “Say something nice to Sarah.”



[Special Indian Talent]

An old Wild West fort was about to be attacked. The wily old General sent for his trusty Indian scout.

“Scout, you must use all your thirty years of skills for me and try to estimate the sort of army we are up against here.”

The trusty Indian scout lay down and put his ear to the ground.

“Heap large war party,” he said, “maybe three hundred braves, four chiefs, two on black stallions, two on white stallions. All have war paint. Many, many guns! A medicine man is also with them.”

“Good grief!” exclaimed the General, “you can tell all of that just by listening to the ground?”

“NO,” replied the Indian. “I can see under the gate.”


눈물의 강이 흐릅니다

여러분, 안녕하십니까?

금요일 아침입니다!

지난 일요일 밤 우리는 우리들의 상징적 문화재인 서울의 남대문이 화재로 쓰러지는 것을 충격 속에서 무력하게 티브이로 바라볼 수밖에 없었습니다.

다음 날 아침 월요병 때문에서가 아니라 우리의 역사 유물에 대한 뜻밖의 사건으로 너무 기가 막혀 모두들 말이 없었습니다.

어떤 사람들은 “가슴이 탑니다.”고 말했습니다. 어떤 사람들은 “가슴이 아픕니다.”고 말했습니다. 어떤 사람들은 그칠 줄 모르는 눈물을 흘렸습니다. 어떤 사람들은 멍하게 허공을 바라보고 있었습니다.

그 불은 단지 610년이나 된 남대문의 목조 구조물을 태워버린 게 아니라 한국인들의 뇌리에 박힌 무형의 자부심을 앗아갔습니다. 이제 전국 각지에서 온 많은 조문객들이 남대문의 잔해를 향하여 예를 표하기 위해 긴 줄을 서 있습니다. 그들의 눈에 남대문은 아직도 그 위엄을 자랑하며 거기에 서 있습니다.

무엇이 그 초췌한 노인으로 하여금 그 특별한 건축물에 불을 지르게 했을까요? 신문 보도에 따르면, 그는 자기 자신의 상업적 동기에서가 아니라 아파트 단지 건설에 의해 시작된 자기 집의 강제 매각과 관련한 자신의 불만에 대하여 청와대를 포함한 모든 사람이 전혀 무관심했다고 사회 자체에 매우 분노하고 있었다 합니다.

이 사건은 168 명의 목숨을 앗아가고 800 명 이상을 부상시킨 그 유명한 1995년 오클라호마 시 폭발사건과 살인자 자신을 포함해 33명의 생명을 앗아간 잊지 못 할 지난 해 버지니아 공대 대량 살인 사건을 생각나게 합니다. 두 사건 모두 티모시 맥베이와 조승희가 정당한 이유가 있든 없든 사회에 대해 정말 화가 났기 때문에 일어 났습니다.

유사한 사회 증오 범죄의 재발을 막기 위해서는 우리 사회가 정신적으로 건강하지 못 한 사람들로 하여금 분노케 할지 모르는 사회적 격차 내지 자가 격차가 적은 사회가 되도록 우리는 노력해야 할 것입니다.

이 사건은 재건축된 남대문과 더불어 영원히 우리 역사 속에 남아 있을 것입니다.

[작은 선물]

스티븐스 신부님이 결혼 50주년을 축하하고 있는 한 부부에 대하여 말씀하셨습니다. 그 남편에게 그의 성공적 결혼생활의 비법이 무엇인지 물었습니다. 그 노신사가 아래 얘기로 대답했습니다.

그의 아내 새라는 그가 데이트한 유일한 소녀였습니다. 그는 고아원에서 자랐고, 그가 가진 것은 모두 그가 열심히 일했기 때문입니다. 그는 데이트할 시간이 전혀 없었는 데 새라는 그가 홀딱 빠지게 했습니다. 그가 그것을 알기 전에 그녀는 그가 그녀에게 결혼해달라고 청하도록 만들었습니다.

그 말은 “새라에게 멋진 말을 해주게.”



[특별한 인디언 척후병]

옛날 서부시대의 요새 하나가 공격을 받을 참이었습니다. 꾀 많은 늙은 대장님이 그의 심복인 인디언 척후병을 데리러 보냈습니다.

“척후병, 날 위해 자네의 30년 기술을 전부 발휘하여 여기서 우리가 대적하고 있는 적군의 종류를 추측해봐야만 되네.”

그 심복인 인디언 척후병은 땅에 엎드려 귀 한쪽을 땅에 갖다 대었습니다.

“많고 큰 전투병” 그가 말했습니다. “아마 300명의 용사들, 4명의 추장들, 흑마를 타고 있는 두 명, 백마를 타고 있는 두 명. 모두 전쟁 페인트 칠했음. 많은, 아주 많은 총들! 주술사도 그들과 함께 있음.”

“맙소사!” 대장이 소리쳤습니다. “자네는 땅에서 소리만 듣고도 그 전부를 말할 수 있는가?”

“아닙니다.” 그 인디언이 대답했습니다. “전 문 밑을 볼 수 있습니다.”
