How to ask a favor

We know from Einstein¡¯s theory of relativity that even though it seems to us that other planets are moving around us, someone outside our solar system will confirm that we¡¯re the ones moving (quite fast, in fact). While it¡¯s hard to imagine we are now moving at around 30km per second, physics tells us this is the objective truth.

In a similar way, it¡¯s very hard to compare cultural norms. We all know, logically, that different cultures have different ways of doing things and that cultures are not right or wrong, just relatively different.

But having lived under a certain culture it will often seem that the other cultures are strange or incorrect: that it¡¯s the other planets that are moving, while we are standing still.

Culture differences are like relative movement of planets, and they are similarly hard to explain.

Here is a specific cultural difference that is often hard to grasp: what is the polite way to ask a favor from someone?

In the Korean culture, asking a favor needs to be done indirectly otherwise you are being extremely impolite. Even from a friend, you would first start a general conversation; talk about some unrelated topic and only later in the conversation ask for your favor.

If it¡¯s a stranger, you will probably avoid asking in the first meeting; in a Korean business setting, you would meet with them once or twice to establish a relationship and only then get to the point.

Being embedded in a culture means you have no good reference point. There¡¯s no way to feel the movement of the earth around the sun without going to live in outer space for a while. But we can make a conscious effort to do our physics calculations according to this fact.

In a similar way, if you want to take your startup global, you need to make a conscious effort to calculate what culture norms are different and how to adapt to them. In many cases, it won¡¯t come naturally and may even seem counter-intuitive or hard to grasp.

Nevertheless, if you ignore the 30km per second movement of the earth, you won¡¯t be able to send a ship to the moon. If you don¡¯t work hard to understand what cultural norms you may be missing when taking your startup global, you won¡¯t get far either.

Coming from your culture, how can you know that this is actually counter-productive? By being very indirect you think you are being polite, but here is what someone coming from a western culture sees: you wasted their time; you are indecisive; you are fake and insincere. If you value my time, why are you not simply asking me directly for what you want?

In fact, from a personal experience, in the past I often finished my first meeting with startup founder, wondering why they asked me for a meeting in the first place: I had to ask myself, did I just waste an hour? Others may think, why did we spend so much time talking about non-relevant things?

In Korean culture those are necessary preliminaries before getting to the point; but in western cultures this ¡°small talk¡± finishes after 5 to 10 minutes, and can be skipped if talking to a busy investor, for example, who may regard every minute as precious time.

Other Korean culture differences affect communication too. For example, in Korea it is common to take a few days before responding to a sensitive email in order to show that the proper thought was put into the response. But when communicating with someone in the US, you risk that they will forget the conversation altogether if they do not receive a response within a day or two.

Israel is even more extreme: in the world of instant messaging, Israelis expect an immediate response, or close to it; in turn, they make sure to answer almost immediately most emails they receive – which gives them an advantage when dealing with Americans, for example.

A similar example is the lack of updates; if you spoke or met someone and would like to keep a live communication channel with him, you need to send periodic updates to remind him you exist. Koreans often think: ¡°what if I have no updates¡± and just wait, months or sometimes over a year, before sending a follow-up email. The recipient has long forgotten about them and moved on.

Forcing yourself to adapt to another culture isn¡¯t easy and is not natural. You have to consciously make these decisions but it¡¯s necessary to stick to them: following your instincts to what is ¡°polite¡± can lead you down the wrong path.
