Bring extra water to the desert

Imagine you¡¯re in the desert, 50 kilometers from the nearest town. You have finished the last drop of water hours ago and you are getting thirsty. The sun above is beating you mercilessly.

A guy appears out of nowhere and has an ice cold crystal-clear bottle of water to sell you. How much would you pay for it?

Keep that answer in mind and now move back in time just slightly. You are about to go on a journey through the desert; you have the option of packing some extra water, but you are not sure if you¡¯ll need it on your journey or not – in fact, high chances are, you won¡¯t need it at all. Will you still pack the extra weight?

Given the story above, you¡¯ll be smart to pack the extra water even if the chances are small that you will actually need it. Simple: the cost of not having the water when you need it, is huge. The cost of packing extra water (and not using it) is small. It¡¯s an easy decision. Take more water when going to the desert.

Startup life is a story of constraints: we are in constant shortage (I¡¯ve mentioned before: if your startup life are comfortable, you are definitely doing something very wrong). When living the startup life, we learn to go through the desert with not enough water, and not enough food, usually with the hot sun above us and without proper shoes to protect us from the sand. But even though there are many constraints, not all of them are the same to all people. And while you need to endure a lot of hardship during your startup journey, make that a bit more pleasant by identifying some constraints that can be lifted.

For example, a good friend of mine travels a lot; perhaps 50% or more of his time is spent on business trips. For my friend, being offline is a terrible hardship. At any single time he is connected to 5~6 messaging programs, 3~4 social networks and on top answers hundreds of emails a day. To miss even an hour of Internet causes him to experience severe withdrawal symptoms. Being on business trips makes it difficult – he is in constant stress to find an open WiFi spot, and when entering a restaurant he will ask for the WiFi password before looking at the menu. For many people, being a few hours (even a few days) without Internet is not a big deal. But for him, the cost of not having Internet available around the clock is painful stress.

The solution is obvious, once you define the problem. Portable international WiFi hotspot is now available at low prices; for $100 a year you can guarantee to have Internet any time and any place – even internationally. You may not need to use it at all, but if you do, it may be like fresh water in the desert. Isn¡¯t it worth paying a small amount to eliminate such a huge source of stress?

What is your own water in the desert equivalent? I asked a few friends; most of them did not think they had such a problem, but when thinking more they found something that was especially stressing and discovered that as soon as the problem is defined, the solution becomes obvious – usually cheap and available. There¡¯s a reason we don¡¯t immediately think about this – our society advocates efficiency; it seems like a waste to sign up to a roaming Internet service if we only end up using it once or twice a year. But this ignores the real cost – the stress and fear when not having a ¡°plan B¡± - easy alternative solution. My advice: don¡¯t be efficient on stuff that really matters; splurge on extra for anything you are worried about.

My personal story is related. For many years my cause of stress was lack of time. I used to pack my schedule with meetings and was in constant worry making it all happen. When I realized this source of stress, I became an excessive time collector: these days I keep my calendar almost completely clear, with no more than two or three defined meetings or events per day. This abundant time allows me to accept any new task (meeting, call or urgent task) at a moment¡¯s notice and also allows me to decline or postpone lots of activities I normally would have piled on my calendar (but may have eventually missed). Time is my precious resource and I decided to keep extra of it with me for emergencies.

What is your precious resource, something you cannot work well without? Does the fear of not having it causes you stress? If so, find how to keep extra of that resource and you may find that despite this perceived ¡°waste¡± you are being much more productive.
