Dear all,

Good morning!

It would be nice for you to read this mail out of town, in a secluded resort.

Obviously, during the latter part of the week airports and train stations, let alone highways have been in a bustle with travelers taking advantage of a long weekend by getting Friday off thanks to Buddha's Birthday, a national holiday, falling on Thursday.

Still, the Day offers us a cherished moment to chew the teachings of Buddha over the vanity of life, karma, cause and effect, etc.

People by nature love to watch soap operas pertaining to such contemporary themes as dough-making, extramarital affairs, early divorce, grandmothers' responsibilities to rear grandchildren, defective family, requirements for happy family and so forth. People sometimes burst into laughter and more often than not shed tears while watching them.

What moved me last Sunday evening was the heartbreaking story about the forty-year-old poet, Mr. Jinsik Park, who has been in his mother's care due to calcification of his body since eight. He cannot stand up by himself at all, nor can he barely move his arms a few inches. Who could imagine the mental and physical pains he has suffered?

He still beamed innocent smiles and has even produced five poetical works. His soul is beaming brightly like searchlight in the dark night sky despite his stricken body.

Here I take the liberty to cite one of his poems without the poet's consent.

-Empty Hands-

You rendered immeasurable assistance
to me.
But I have nothing
to give you in return
Due to my empty hands.

You hurled endless love
at me.
But I have even no love
to present to you
Due to my empty hands.

Nothing to give you in return
makes me just look into my palms
Of my empty hands.

In the lines of my palms portending my life
lie the lines of your palms
Numerous scratches
in the lines of my palms portending my life
Make you cry buckets

However, what can I do for you?
Oh, Mother,
I have nothing
to give you in return
Due to my empty hands.

The love you bestowed on me
runs deeper than that deep river
And flies higher than the sky.

Who could measure the depth of his mother's love for him? You may view the story, "Calcified Poet and Mother," on e-MBC should you be interested.

Have a good weekend! Om-mani-ban-mehum!

Hank

[The Limits of Love]

After the divorce, her teenage daughter became increasingly rebellious. It culminated late one night when the police called to tell her that she had to come to the police station to pick up her daughter, who was arrested for drunk driving.

They didn't speak until the next afternoon. Mom broke the tension by giving her daughter a small gift-wrapped box.

Her daughter nonchalantly opened it and found a small piece of a rock. She rolled her eyes and said, "Cute Mom, what's this for?"

"Here's the card," Mom said.

Her daughter took the card out of the envelope and read it. Tears started to trickle down her cheeks. She got up and gave her mom a big hug as the card fell to the floor.

On the card were these words:

"This rock is more than 200 million years old. That's how long it will take before I give up on you."

[King of Jungle]

The lion was proud of his mastery of the animal kingdom. One day he decided to make sure all the other animals knew he was king of the jungle. He was so confident that he bypassed the smaller animals and went straight to the bear.

"Who is the king of the jungle?" the lion asked.

"Why, of course, you are," the bear replied. The lion gave a mighty roar of approval.

Next he asked the tiger, "Who is the king of the jungle?"

The tiger quickly responded, "Everyone knows that YOU are, oh mighty lion."

Next on the list was the elephant. "Who is the king of the jungle?" the lion asked.

The elephant immediately grabbed the lion with his trunk, whirled him around in the air five or six times and slammed him into a tree. Then he pounded him onto the ground several times, dunked him under water in a nearby lake and finally dumped him out on the shore.

The lion - beaten, bruised and battered - struggled to his feet.

"Look," he told the elephant, "just you don't know the answer is no reason to get upset."
