Good Friday morning!


Today I am very pleased to deliver you a trilogy that may make you smile and feel it’s worth living.

Last weekend a local TV channel featured a piece of inspiring news of Mr. Hirotada Ototake who was born with truncated arms and legs but took the bravery to be a full-time teacher at an elementary school in Tokyo.

Like Allison Lapper, a UK mouth and foot painter born in a similar body figure who visited Seoul last year with her fully formed son, Parys, he believes he is not a disabled person but different from average people in terms of shape.


At the first meeting with his students he didn’t blush but cheerfully said to them that he would welcome their reaching out a helping hand to him. He may be way mentally healthier than many of us.

Beginning Wednesday, May 11, through next Tuesday, May 17, for a week, paintings drawn by Ms. Kyung-Hay Hahn, a fourth grade disabled Oriental painter, will be on display at the Gong Gallery (Ph.: 730-1144). She had suffered from congenital cerebral palsy from birth until seven years old when she couldn’t even drink water and was diagnosed to be hopeless by doctors.

Her mother persuaded her to present herself to His Holiness Sungchul, the most venerable Buddhist monk in Korea’s modern history, like a drowning person trying to seize at a straw and as part of her efforts to repent her sins for a better after-life.
She asked the venerable Buddhist monk, “Sir, when shall I die?” “You shall die this evening,” he answered. “Where shall I die?” she kept on asking. He replied, “You should die in your home.” Mysteriously, she could reportedly drink water since then and was getting better to become a painter.

Water and paddy appear in her paintings on display reflecting her expectation that every viewer may feel affluence of life and peace. Maybe her imperfect and awkward smile is the most beautiful in the eye of beautiful minds.

Last but not least, Mr. Sungik Hahn, a plastic surgeon in Seoul, published a book based on his own stories: “A Surgery for Ten-Thousand Won (US$10), Happiness Worth Ten-Thousand Won.” Dr. Hahn performs plastic surgeries to people with facial impairment for ten thousand won, such as a single lady who has no right eye due to eyeball cancer treatment, a child with one ear, a man who has to drip water into his eye due to a hole in his palate whenever he drinks water, and so on.

Initially, he did not charge for such surgeries. He began to charge ten thousand won since a girl, who had gone through surgeries twice and awaited the third surgery, disappeared to save her shattered ego from another free surgery. On top of ten thousand won he makes it a rule to call on such people to make a promise to do a good deed to somebody in return. His angelic story reminds me of the well-known cleft charity, the Smile Train (www.smiletrain.org).

[Heaven and Hell]

A man spoke with the Lord about Heaven and Hell. “I will show you Hell,” said the Lord. And they went into a room which had a large pot of stew in the middle. The smell was delicious and around the pot sat people who were famished and desperate.

All were holding spoons with very long handles which reached to the pot, but because the handles of the spoons were longer than their arms, it was impossible to get the stew into their mouths. Their suffering was terrible.

“Now I will show you Heaven,” said the Lord, and they went into an identical room. There was a similar pot of stew and the people had the same identical spoons, but they were well nourished, talking and happy.

At first the man did not understand.
“It is simple,” said the Lord.
“You see, they have learned to feed each other.”

[Teaching Profession]

A teacher was asked to fill out a special questionnaire for the state. One question said, “Give two reasons for entering the teaching profession.”

The teacher wrote, “July and August.”

세 명의 참된 삶 이야기

즐거운 금요일 아침입니다!

오늘 저는 여러분을 미소짓게 하고 삶의 보람을 느끼게 해드릴 세 가지 이야기를 들려드리고자 합니다.

지난 주말 한 TV 방송은 짧게 잘린 팔다리를 갖고 태어났지만 도쿄의 한 초등학교 선생님이 된 용기있는 히로타다 오토타케씨에 대한 감동적인 뉴스를 전했습니다. 지난 해 온전한 신체를 가진 아들 패리스와 함께 서울을 방문했던 오토타케씨와 비슷한 신체적 형태로 태어난 영국인 구족화가 앨리슨 래퍼씨처럼 오토타케씨는 자신은 불구자가 아니라 보통 사람들과 모습이 다를 뿐이라고 믿고 있습니다.

제자들과 첫 만남에서 그는 얼굴을 붉히지 않고 명랑한 말투로 그들이 그를 도와주는 것을 환영하노라고 말했습니다. 정신적으로 그는 아마 우리들 중 많은 사람들보다 훨씬 더 건강할 것입니다.

5월 11일 수요일부터 5월 17일 화요일까지 일주일간 4급 신체 장애 동양화가 한경혜씨의 전시회가 공화랑 (전화: 730-1144)에서 개최됩니다. 한경혜씨는 태어날 때부터 선천성 뇌성마비를 앓아 일곱 살이 되었을 때는 물도 삼키지 못했고 의사들로부터 희망이 없다는 진단을 받았습니다.

그녀의 어머니는 물에 빠진 사람이 지푸라기라도 잡는 심정으로 그리고 내세를 위해 죄를 참회해보자며 한경혜씨를 설득하여 현대 한국사에서 가장 존경받는 스님이신 성철 스님을 뵈었습니다.

그녀는 성철스님께 여쭸습니다. “전 언제 죽어요?” “오늘 저녁에 죽거라.”하고 스님은 대답하셨습니다. 그녀는 계속 물었습니다. “어디서 죽어요?” 스님은 “네 집에서 죽거라.” 하고 대답하셨습니다. 신기하게도 그 후로 그녀는 물을 마실 수 있었고 점점 몸이 나아져 화가가 되었다고 합니다.

그림을 보는 사람들이 삶의 풍요로움과 평화를 느끼기를 바라는 자신의 기대를 나타내어 그녀의 그림에는 물과 벼가 등장합니다. 어쩌면 불완전하고 어색한 그녀의 미소가 아름다운 마음을 가진 사람들 눈에는 가장 아름다울지 모르겠습니다.

마지막으로, 서울의 성형외과 의사 한성익씨는 자신의 얘기를 담은 책 “만원의 수술, 만원의 행복”을 발간했습니다. 한선생님은 만원에 안구암 치료로 오른 쪽 눈이 없는 처녀, 귀 하나가 없는 어린이, 입천장이 뚫려 있어 물을 마시면 한 쪽 눈으로 나오는 남자 등 안면 장애자들에게 성형 수술을 해줍니다.

애초에 그는 수술비를 받지 않았습니다. 그러나, 두 번의 수술을 받고 세 번 째 수술을 기다리던 소녀가 공짜 수술에 상한 자존심을 지키려고 사라져 버린 후로 만원을 받기 시작했습니다. 만원 외에 그는 그러한 환자들에게 나중에 누군가에게 선행을 하겠다는 약속을 받아내고 있습니다. 그의 천사 같은 이야기는 유명한 언청이 무료수술재단 스마일 트레인 (www.smiletrain.org)을 생각나게 합니다.

[천국과 지옥]

어떤 사람이 하느님과 천국과 지옥에 대해 얘기를 나누었습니다. “내가 지옥을 보여주지.” 하느님께서 말씀하셨습니다. 하느님과 그 사람은 가운데에 커다란 스튜 항아리가 있는 방으로 들어갔습니다. 냄새는 기가 막혔고, 굶주림에 지친 사람들이 항아리를 둘러싸고 앉아 있었습니다.

모든 사람들은 항아리에 닿는 기다란 손잡이가 달린 스푼을 쥐고 있었지만, 스푼 손잡이가 팔보다 길어 입으로 스튜를 가져 가지 못 하고 있었습니다. 그들이 겪는 고통은 끔찍했습니다.

“이제 당신에게 천국을 보여줄게.” 하느님께서 말씀하시고는 하느님과 그 사람은 아까와 같이 생긴 방으로 들어갔습니다. 비슷한 스튜 항아리가 있었고, 사람들은 똑 같은 스푼을 쥐고 있었지만, 그들은 영양상태가 좋았고 얘기를 하며 행복한 모습이었습니다.

그 남자는 처음에는 이해가 되지 않았습니다.
“그건 간단하지.” 하느님께서 말씀하셨습니다.
“이봐, 저 사람들은 서로 먹여줄 줄을 알잖아.”

[교사란 직업]

어떤 선생님이 주정부에서 만든 특별 질문서에 답하도록 요구 받았습니다. 그 중에 한 질문은 “교사란 직업을 갖게 된 두 가지 이유를 대시오.” 였습니다.

그 선생님은 답을 썼습니다.

“7월과 8월.”
