Dear all,

Good Friday morning!


As all of us fully perceive, global warming is no longer an abstract threat or jargons monopolized by scientists, but street language and a pressing reality to us. Sharp distinctions between seasonal weather have blurred, as we could sense this winter.
This winter was quite obviously warmer than usual except in the latter part of the week, including today. Interestingly, according to a recent survey conducted by ACNielsen, the world’s leading marketing information company, Americans are least concerned about it among all nations on earth even though Corporate America headed by George Bush, Jr. is the world’s top source of greenhouse gases.

Still, the change of seasons has unconsciously crept up on us since the length of daylight overtook that of night. We didn’t experience the freezing icy weather this year, though. … And today is Groundhog Day, a popular tradition in the United States, particularly in Pennsylvania.

Today the groundhog peeps out of its burrow in search of its shadow. Americans believe the winter will last for another six weeks if the groundhog returns to its hole after being scared by its own shadow. They believe the winter will soon end if the groundhog doesn’t run back into its hole due to a cloudy and shadowless day. It’s much like how we believe that the emergence of frogs and bears from their winter quarters at the end of hibernation portends a sign of spring.


Now that we are crossing the threshold of spring, let’s make big stretches and get ready for the imminent demission of the crazy winter by indulging ourselves in voluminous reading. Along with our amazingly increased time watching TV and using the Internet and the remarkably reduced time reading books, we are liable to just take up subjective judgments made by others as if they were facts with no valuation. Our thinking ability may dim and eventually vanish if books do not remain in close proximity to us, as our venerable patriot Ahn Joong-Gun said.

[Two Frogs]

A group of frogs were traveling through the woods, and two of them fell into a deep pit. When the other frogs saw how deep the pit was, they told the two frogs that they were as good as dead. The two frogs ignored the comments and tried to jump up out of the pit with all their might. The other frogs kept telling them to stop, that they were as good as dead. Finally, one of the two frogs took heed to what the other frogs were saying and gave up. He fell down and died.

The other frog continued to jump as hard as he could. Once again, the crowd of frogs yelled at him to stop the pain and just die. He jumped even harder and finally made it out. When he got out, the other frogs said, "Did you not hear us?" The frog explained to them that he was deaf. He thought they were ENCOURAGING him the entire time.

우리 모두 잘 알고 있다시피 지구 온난화는 더 이상 관념적 위협이거나 과학자들의 전유물인 전문 용어가 아니라 흔히 듣는 말이고 우리에게 절박한 현실입니다. 우리가 올 겨울에 느꼈던 바와 같이 계절별 날씨 간의 뚜렷한 특징은 흐려졌습니다.

올 겨울은 오늘을 포함한 금주 후반을 제외하고는 확실히 예전보다 따뜻했습니다. 흥미롭게도, 세계 최고 마케팅 정보 회사인 에이 씨 닐슨사의 최근 조사에 따르면, 조지 부시 주니어가 대통령인 미국 주식회사가 온실 가스 배출에 세계 으뜸임에도 불구하고, 지구상 모든 국민 가운데 미국인이 지구 온난화를 가장 걱정하지 않는다고 합니다.

하지만, 낮의 길이가 밤의 길이보다 길어진 걸 보면, 계절의 변화는 우리가 느끼지 못 하는 새에 우리 곁에 다가왔습니다. 금년에는 얼음 같이 차가운 날씨를 겪진 못 했지만 말입니다. 그리고, 오늘은 미국 특히 펜실베니아주에서 인기있는 전통인 성촉절입니다.

오늘이면 마모트는 자신의 그림자를 찾으려고 굴에서 나와 고개를 삐죽 내밉니다. 미국인들은 만약 마모트가 자신의 그림자에 놀라 굴로 되돌아가면 겨울은 6주 더 계속될 것으로 믿습니다. 만일에 흐리고 그림자 없는 날 때문에 마모트가 굴로 돌아가지 않으면 미국인들은 겨울이 곧 끝날 것으로 믿습니다. 그것은 우리가 개구리와 곰이 동면을 끝내고 겨울 숙소에서 나오는 것이 봄의 징후를 예고하는 것으로 믿는 것과 매우 흡사합니다.

이제 우리는 봄의 문턱을 넘으려 하고 있으므로, 기지개를 크게 켜고서 많은 독서에 몰입함으로써 곧 있을 이상한 겨울의 퇴장을 준비해야 하겠습니다. 우리가 티브이를 보고 인터넷을 사용하는 시간이 엄청나게 늘어나고 책 읽는 시간은 현격히 줄어든 것과 더불어서 우리는 다른 사람이 내린 주관적 판단을 마치 가치 판단이 개재되지 않은 사실인양 그대로 수용하기 쉽습니다. 만약 우리가 책을 가까이 하지 않으면, 우리가 존경하는 안중근 의사의 말처럼 우리의 생각하는 능력은 흐려져서 마침내는 사라져 버릴지도 모릅니다.

[두 마리 개구리]

개구리 떼 한 무리가 숲을 거쳐 여행을 하고 있었는 데 그 중 두 마리가 깊은 구덩이에 빠졌습니다. 그 구덩이가 얼마나 깊은지 보고는 다른 개구리들이 두 개구리에게 그들은 죽은 거나 다름없다고 말했습니다. 두 개구리는 그 말을 무시하고 있는 힘을 다해 구덩이로부터 빠져 나오려고 애썼습니다. 다른 개구리들은 두 개구리에게 그들은 죽은 거나 다름없다며 계속 그만 두라고 말했습니다. 마침내, 두 개구리 가운데 한 마리가 다른 개구리들이 하는 말에 주의를 기울이고는 포기를 했습니다. 그 개구리는 쓰러져 죽었습니다.

다른 개구리는 있는 힘을 다해 점프를 계속했습니다. 다시 한번, 나머지 개구리 떼들이 그 개구리에게 애쓰지 말고 고이 죽어라고 고함을 질렀습니다. 그 개구리는 더 힘차게 점프를 하고는 마침내 구덩이 밖으로 나왔습니다. 그 개구리가 나오자 다른 개구리들이 물었습니다. “너 우리가 하는 소리 못 들었어?” 그 개구리는 다른 개구리들에게 자신이 귀머거리라고 설명했습니다. 그 개구리는 그들이 처음부터 끝까지 그를 격려하는 줄 알았던 것입니다.
