Dear all,

Good morning!

Upon returning to my office from the recent trip to the States, I can¡¯t help but notice that the calendar in front of me has already turned its page over to May when many family events are slated to roll out. We had Parents¡¯ Day last Tuesday, let alone Children¡¯s Day on May 5th.

Many countries celebrate their own Father¡¯s Day, Mother¡¯s Day and Children¡¯s Day at a different time throughout the year. It¡¯s quite natural that the Korean government proclaimed May as the Month of Family, given that family stands the most fundamental human institution in every culture and era.

In the face of a surge of family breakdown, domestic violence, and hosts of other family problems cracking up human bondage, the Month of Family provides a good opportunity to re-examine our priorities and values.

In Korean society where commitment to family has always been a core value, other values such as wealth, social standing, fame and nation haven¡¯t preceded over our responsibilities as parents or as sons and daughters. Let¡¯s pause for breath to see if we are fulfilling our responsibilities as parents before demanding blind obedience upon our children, or as pious sons and daughters before focusing on self-fulfillment and self-gratification.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank my daughters for their thoughtful gifts, including a Parents¡¯ Day card, flowers and cakes ordered online from Boston in honor of Parents¡¯ Day. If any of you somehow missed your chance to send a bouquet of flowers or a card scribbled ¡°I love you¡± to your parents on Tuesday, it¡¯s never too late to visit them or invite them to a decent dinner during the weekend.

Enjoy your time with your family! Good weekend!

[Poison]

A long time ago, a girl named Li-Li got married and went to live with her husband and mother-in-law. In a very short time, Li-Li found that she couldn't get along with her mother-in-law at all. Their personalities were very different, and Li-Li was angered by many of her mother-in-law's habits. In addition, she criticized Li-Li constantly.

Days passed days, and weeks passed weeks. Li-Li and her mother-in-law never stopped arguing and fighting. But what made the situation even worse was that, according to ancient Chinese tradition, Li-Li had to bow to her mother-in-law and obey her every wish. All the anger and unhappiness in the house was causing the poor husband great distress.

Finally, Li-Li could not stand her mother-in-law's bad temper and dictatorship any longer, and she decided to do something about it.

Li-Li went to see her father's good friend, Mr. Huang, who sold herbs. She told him the situation and asked if he would give her some poison so that she could solve the problem once and for all. Mr. Huang thought for a while, and finally said, ¡°Li-Li, I will help you solve your problem, but you must listen to me and obey what I tell you.¡± Li-Li said, ¡°Yes, Mr. Huang, I will do whatever you tell me to do.¡±

Mr. Huang went into the back room, and returned in a few minutes with a package of herbs. He told Li-Li, ¡°You can't use a quick-acting poison to get rid of your mother-in-law, because that would cause people to become suspicious. Therefore, I have given you a number of herbs that will slowly build up poison in her body. Every other day prepare some pork or chicken and put a little of these herbs in her serving. Now, in order to make sure that nobody suspects you when she dies, you must be very careful to act very friendly towards her. Don't argue with her, obey her every wish, and treat her like a queen.¡± Li-Li was so happy. She thanked Mr. Huang and hurried home to start her plot of murdering her mother-in-law.

Weeks went by, and months went by, and every other day, Li-Li served the specially treated food to her mother-in-law. She remembered what Mr. Huang had said about avoiding suspicion, so she controlled her temper, obeyed her mother-in-law, and treated her like her own mother. After six months had passed, the whole household had changed. Li-Li had practiced controlling her temper so much that she found that she almost never got mad or upset. She hadn't had an argument in six months with her mother-in-law, who now seemed much kinder and easier to get along with.

The mother-in-law's attitude toward Li-Li changed, and she began to love Li-Li like her own daughter. She kept telling friends and relatives that Li-Li was the best daughter-in-law one could ever find. Li-Li and her mother-in-law were now treating each other like a real mother and daughter. Li-Li's husband was very happy to see what was happening.

One day, Li-Li came to see Mr. Huang and asked for his help again. She said, ¡°Dear Mr. Huang, please help me to keep the poison from killing my mother-in-law! She's changed into such a nice woman, and I love her like my own mother. I do not want her to die because of the poison I gave her.¡±

Mr. Huang smiled and nodded his head. ¡°Li-Li, there's nothing to worry about. I never gave you any poison. The herbs I gave you were vitamins to improve her health. The only poison was in your mind and your attitude toward her, but that has been all washed away by the love which you gave to her.¡±

[Speeding]

An older lady gets pulled over for speeding¡¦

Older Woman: Is there a problem, Officer?

Officer: Ma¡¯am, you were speeding.

Older Woman: Oh, I see.

Officer: Can I see your license, please?

Older Woman: I¡¯d give it to you but I don¡¯t have one.

Officer: Don¡¯t have one?

Older Woman: Lost it 4 years ago for drunk driving.

Officer: I see¡¦Can I see your vehicle registration papers, please?

Older Woman: I can¡¯t do that.

Officer: Why not?

Older Woman: I stole this car.

Officer: Stole it?

Older Woman: Yes, and I killed and hacked up the owner.

Officer: You what?

Older Woman: His body parts are in plastic bags in the trunk if you want to see.

The officer looks at the woman and slowly backs away to his car and calls for back up. Within minutes 5 police cars circle the car. A senior officer slowly approaches the car, clasping his half drawn gun.

Officer 2: Ma¡¯am, could you step out of your vehicle, please!

The woman steps out of her vehicle.

Older Woman: Is there a problem, sir?

Officer 2: One of my officers told me that you have stolen this car and murdered the owner.

Older Woman: Murdered the owner?

Officer 2: Yes, could you please open the trunk of your car?

The woman opens the trunk, revealing nothing but an empty trunk.

Officer 2: Is this your car, ma¡¯am?

Older Woman: Yes, here are the registration papers.

The officer is quite stunned.

Officer 2: One of my officers claims that you do not have a driving license.

The woman digs into her handbag and pulls out a clutch purse and hands it to the officer. The officer examines the license. He looks quite puzzled.

Officer 2: Thank you ma¡¯am. One of my officers told me you didn¡¯t have a license, that you stole this car, and that you murdered and hacked up the owner.

Older Woman: Bet the liar told you I was speeding, too.
