Good Friday morning!


The new year of fortune hog has started. Yet, we appear to be stalled with the whirlwind of past year’s event such as the execution of Saddam Hussein. The trend on capital punishment stands obviously in favor of abolishing it.

Still, we may enjoy the fresh starts the arrival of a new year brings about. The start of this year appears more refreshing with the following two pieces of inspiring news:

On Tuesday, Mr. Chang-Hyun Choi, who is suffering from congenital cerebral palsy, arrived in Paris on his motorized wheelchair as part of his around-the-Europe tour for the reunification of two Koreas, which he had started last May from Athens, Greece. His final destination is known to be Berlin, Germany. Yesterday, Mike Perham, a British 14-year-old boy, successfully completed his solo sail across the Atlantic Ocean after a six-week voyage.


Both episodes are a superb showcase of courage and tenacity. People say adolescence is a time of storm and stress not only for the adolescents but also for their parents. We must admit that their departure from conventional wisdom, spurred during such torrential time, have led us to advance in knowledge, science, culture and so forth. Kids should, therefore, be encouraged with love, care, sacrifice and compromise to deviate from the way we think and behave.

Above all, they are who we care most, not an extension of ourselves, and, therefore, they should just let be. If we die tomorrow, the company that we’ve been working for would easily replace us in a matter of days but the family we leave behind would feel the loss for the rest of their lives.

And come to think of it, we pour ourselves more into work than into our own families. An unwise investment indeed, don’t you think?

[A Mom’s Confession]

I ran into a stranger as he passed by, “Oh, excuse me, please.” was my reply.
He said, “Please, excuse me, too. I wasn’t watching for you.”
We were very polite, this stranger and I. We went on our way saying good-bye.

But at home a difference is told, how we treat our loved ones, young and old. Later that day, cooking the evening meal, my son stood beside me very still. As I turned, I nearly knocked him down.

“Move out of the way,” I said with a frown.
He walked away, his little heart broken. I didn’t realize how harshly I’d spoken.

While I lay awake in bed, God’s still small voice came to me and said, “While dealing with a stranger, you use common courtesy, but the children you love, you seem to abuse. Go and look on the kitchen floor, you’ll find some flowers there by the door. Those are the flowers he brought for you. He picked them himself: pink, yellow and blue. He stood very quietly not to spoil the surprise, and you never saw the tears that filled his little eyes.”

By this time, I felt very small, and now my tears began to fall. I quietly went and knelt by his bed; “Wake up, little one, wake up,” I said. “Are these the flowers you picked for me?”

He smiled, “I found ‘em out by the tree. I picked ‘em because they’re pretty like you. I knew you’d like ‘em, especially the blue.”
I said, “Son, I’m very sorry for the way I acted today; I shouldn’t have yelled at you that way.”

He said, “Oh, Mom, that’s okay. I love you anyway.” (In the recently released movie, Silent Hill, a female cop says to the heroine who is desperately in search of her vanished daughter, “Mom is God in the kids’ eyes.”)

I said, “Son, I love you, too, and I do like the flowers, especially the blue.”

[Tour of Hell]

A man died and went to straight down to hell. The devil greeted him and gave him a guided tour of the place. He told the man that there were three rooms he could chose from in which to spend eternity.

The first room was full of flames so hot the man couldn't even breathe. He told the devil that there was no way he was choosing that room. So they moved on.

The next room they came to was full of people who were being beaten and tortured. It looked so painful the man could not watch. He told the devil he definitely didn't want that room, and they moved on.

The last room they came to was full of people who were just sitting around drinking coffee and relaxing. The only thing was that they were standing around in about two feet of poop. The man looked for a while and then told the devil this room would be all right.

The devil gestured for him to sit down and the man took a seat. He did, sipped his coffee and felt really pleased with his choice. After a few minutes, a voice came over the loudspeaker and said, "Break time is over! Back on your heads!"

여러분, 안녕하십니까?

행운의 돼지 해 신년이 시작되었습니다. 하지만, 우리는 사담 후세인의 처형과 같은 지난 해의 소용돌이에 빠져 꼼짝달싹 못 하고 있는 것 같습니다. 사형제에 대한 시대 조류는 분명히 그 폐지 편에 서 있습니다.

그럼에도 불구하고, 우리는 새로운 해의 도래가 가져오는 새로운 출발을 즐길 수 있을 겁니다. 금년의 시작은 다음과 같이 고무적인 두 가지 뉴스로 인해 더 상쾌한 것 같습니다.

지난 화요일. 동력 휠체어를 탄 뇌성마비 환자 최창현씨가 지난 5월 그리스 아테네에서 자신이 시작했던 한반도 통일을 염원하는 유럽 일주의 한 여정으로 파리에 도착했습니다. 그의 종착점은 독일 베를린으로 알려져 있습니다. 어제는 14세의 영국 소년 마이크 퍼햄군이 6주간의 항해 끝에 대서양 단독 횡단을 성공리에 끝냈습니다.

두 얘기 모두 용기와 인내심을 잘 보여주는 뛰어난 케이스입니다. 사람들은 청소년뿐 아니라 그들 부모에게도 사춘기는 질풍 노도의 시기라고 합니다. 우리는 그러한 격랑의 시기에 촉발된 청소년들의 인습으로부터의 탈출이 지식, 과학, 문화 등 면에서 우리의 발전을 이끌어 왔다는 점을 인정해야만 합니다. 그러므로, 우리는 사랑과 보호와 희생과 타협의 자세로서 애들이 우리가 생각하고 행동하는 바로부터 일탈하도록 장려해야 할 것입니다.

무엇보다도, 그들은 우리가 가장 관심을 가지는 대상이지, 우리 자신의 연장선 (우리 자신이 못 이룬 것을 대신 이루는 것)이 아니며, 그러므로, 애들은 그냥 놔둬야 합니다. 만약 우리가 내일이라도 죽게 되면, 우리가 일해온 회사는 며칠 내에 쉽게 후임자를 세울 것이지만, 우리가 뒤에 남긴 가족들은 그들의 평생 동안 우리를 보낸 것을 느끼며 살아 갈 것입니다.

생각해보면, 우리는 우리 자신의 가족보다 일에 더 많은 정성을 쏟아 넣습니다. 정말로 어리석은 투자지요. 안 그렇습니까?

[어떤 어머니의 고백]

제가 지나가는 낯선 사람과 부딪치면, “아, 대단히 죄송합니다.” 하고 말합니다. 그 사람은 “저 역시 대단히 죄송하게 됐습니다. 제가 주의를 잘 살피지 않은 탓이지요..”하고 말합니다. 낯선 그 사람과 저. 우리는 아주 공손합니다. 그리고 우리는 작별 인사를 하고는 가던 길을 계속 가지요.

그러나, 집에 와서 늙었던 젊었던 간에 우리가 사랑하는 사람들을 대하는 우리의 태도는 전혀 딴 판입니다. 그 날 늦게 제가 저녁 준비를 하고 있을 때 제 아들은 조용히 제 곁에 서 있었습니다. 제가 몸을 돌렸을 때 저는 하마터면 아들을 쓰러뜨릴 뻔 했습니다.

“거기 서 비켜!” 저는 얼굴을 찡그리며 말했습니다.
아들이 자리를 비켰습니다. 그의 어린 가슴에 상처를 입은 채. 저는 제가 얼마나 모진 말을 했는지 깨닫지 못 했습니다.

잠자리에 누워 있으니 하느님의 나지막한 소리가 제게 말했습니다. “낯선 사람을 대할 때 그대는 예의를 베풀었지만, 사랑하는 애들은 학대를 하는 것 같아. 가서 부엌 마루 위를 봐. 문 곁에 꽃들이 놓여 있을 거야. 그 꽃들은 그대의 아들이 그대를 위해 가져 온 거야. 그 애가 직접 그 꽃들을 땄지. 핑크, 노랑, 파랑. 그 애는 그대의 놀라움을 깨뜨리지 않으려고 가만히 서 있었던 거야. 그대는 그 애의 작은 눈을 가득 채웠던 눈물을 보지 못했지.”

이 때 저는 제 자신이 아주 작아지는 것을 느꼈고, 그러고 나자 제 눈에선 눈물이 흐르기 시작했습니다. 저는 조용히 아들 침대 곁으로 가 무릎을 꿇고 “아가야, 일어나렴, 일어나.”하고 말했습니다. “이 꽃들이 네가 엄마 주려고 가져 온 거니?”

아들은 미소를 지었습니다. “내가 나무 옆에서 본 꽃들이에요. 꽃들이 엄마처럼 예뻐서 내가 땄어요. 엄마가 좋아하실 줄 알았어요 특히, 파란 꽃들을.” 저는 말했습니다. “얘야, 엄마가 오늘 네게 한 행동은 너무 미안하구나. 그렇게 네게 고함 지르지 않았어야 했는 데.”

아들이 말했습니다. “아니, 엄마. 괜찮아요. 그래도 난 엄마를 사랑해요.” (최근 상영된 영화 ‘싸일런트 힐’에서 여자 경관은 사라진 딸을 애타게 찾는 여주인공에게 ‘애들 눈에 엄마는 신’이란 말을 합니다.) 전 말했습니다. “얘야, 엄마도 널 사랑한단다. 엄마는 정말로 (네가 준) 꽃들을 좋아하고 특히, 파란 꽃을 좋아해.”

[지옥 구경]

한 남자가 죽어서 곧장 지옥에 떨어졌습니다. 악마는 그 남자를 반기며 지옥 구경을 시켜주었습니다. 악마는 그 남자에게 세 방 중에 하나를 골라야 하고 거기서 영원히 살아야 한다고 말했습니다.

첫번 째 방은 불꽃으로 가득차 너무 더워서 남자는 숨쉬기도 어려웠습니다. 남자는 악마에게 그 방을 고를 이유가 없다고 말했습니다. 그래서 그들은 다음 방으로 갔습니다.

그들이 간 다음 방은 얻어맞고 고문을 당하는 사람들로 가득 찼습니다.. 그 광경은 너무 끔찍해 남자는 바라볼 수도 없었습니다. 남자는 악마에게 그 방은 분명히 그가 원하는 게 아니라고 말했으며, 그들은 다음 방으로 갔습니다.

그들이 간 마지막 방은 앉아서 커피를 마시며 편하게 쉬고 있는 사람들로 가득 찼습니다. 다만, 한 가지. 사람들이 약 2피트 깊이의 똥 속에 둘러 서 있었습니다. 남자는 한 동안 쳐다보고는 악마에게 그 방이 좋겠다고 말했습니다.

악마는 남자에게 앉으라는 제스처를 했고 남자는 자리에 앉았습니다. 남자는 커피를 홀짝거리며 자신의 선택에 정말로 만족하고 있었습니다. 몇 분 후 스피커로 한 목소리가 흘러나오며 말했습니다. “휴식 시간 끝! 머리 거꾸로 쳐박아!”
