[Hank's Mail] Fresh Start for 2007

Good morning!


As 2007 swings into gear, there’s no better time to give our body and soul a healthy, fresh start than now.

Last Wednesday the American Cancer Society reported that cancer death rates have been declining for a long time and the declines have finally outpaced the growth and aging of the population in the U.S. The director of ACS in charge of the research attributed the key contributions to “early detection and screening” and “better treatments.”

Since eating clean is a great move forward for us living under environmental toxins, we should try to take the following 10 good detoxifying foods: green leafy vegetables, lemons, watercress, garlic, green tea, broccoli sprouts, sesame seeds, cabbage, psyllium and fruits.


According to the Census conducted recently, a majority of American women or 51 percent of women are living without a spouse for the first time, up from 49 percent in 2000 and 35 percent in 1950. The following are factored into the shift: women marrying at a later age, women living with partners for more often and for longer periods, and women living longer as widows and once divorced often opt to stay single.

People exaggerate how much happiness can be bought by an extra few thousand dollars. The quality of relationships has a far bigger effect than a large rise in salary. So a word of advice in my humble thinking: If you’re looking for happiness in life, it’s much better to find the right loved one or life partner than to double your salary.

[Take Hold of Every Moment]

A friend of mine opened his wife's underwear drawer and picked up a silk paper wrapped package.

"This,” he said “isn't any ordinary package." He unwrapped the box and stared at both the silk paper and the box. "She got this the first time we went to New York, 8 or 9 years ago. She has never put it on. Was she saving it for a special occasion? Well, I guess this is it."

He got near the bed and placed the gift box next to the other clothing he was taking to the funeral house. His wife had just died. He turned to me and said: "Never save something for a special occasion. Every day in your life is a special occasion."

I still think those words changed my life.

I sit on the porch without worrying about anything. I spend more time with my family, and less at work.. I understand that life should be a source of experience to be lived up to, not survived through.

I no longer keep anything. I use crystal glasses every day. I'll wear new clothes to go to the supermarket, if I feel like it. I don't save my special perfume for special occasions. I use it whenever I want to. The words "Someday..." and "One Day..." are fading away from my dictionary. If it's worth seeing, listening or doing, I want to see, listen or do it now.

I don't know what my friend's wife would have done if she knew she wouldn't be there the next morning. I think she might have called her relatives and closest friends. She might have called old friends to make peace over past quarrels. I'd like to think she would have gone out for Chinese, her favorite food.

Now, I try not to delay, postpone or keep anything that could bring laughter and joy into our lives. And each morning I say to myself that this could be a special day. If you got this, it's because someone cares for you and because, probably, there's someone you care about.


[Witness]

At the height of a political corruption trial, the prosecuting attorney attacked a witness. "Isn't it true," he bellowed, "that you accepted five thousand dollars to compromise this case?"

The witness stared out the window as though he hadn't heard the question.

"Isn't it true that you accepted five thousand dollars to compromise this case?" the lawyer repeated. The witness still did not respond.

Finally, the judge leaned over and said, "Sir, please answer the question."

"Oh," the startled witness said, "I thought he was talking to you, Your Honor."

그리고, 최근 실시된 쎈서스에 의하면, 1950년의 35 퍼센트, 2000년의 49 퍼센트에서 처음으로 과반수 이상의 미국 여성 즉, 51 퍼센트의 여성이 배우자 없이 살고 있답니다. 이 같은 변화의 요인은 다음과 같습니다. 여성들의 만혼, 더 흔해지고 장기화 된 여성들의 사실혼, 그리고 여성들의 장기적 과부 생활 및 일단 이혼 후에는 대부분 혼자 사는 성향.

흔히들 돈을 좀 더 쓰면 행복을 살 수 있다고 과장해서 말합니다. 그러나, 좋은 인간관계가 급여의 대폭 인상보다 훨씬 더 (행복해지는 데에) 큰 효과가 있습니다. 그래서 제 좁은 소견으로 한 마디 하자면, 만약 여러분이 인생의 행복을 찾고자 한다면, 월급을 배로 늘이는 것보다 자신에게 맞는 사랑하는 사람이나 인생의 반려자를 찾는 것이 훨씬 좋습니다.

[순간 순간을 즐기세요]


제 친구가 아내의 속옷장을 열고 실크 포장지로 포장된 꾸러미를 하나 집어 들었습니다.


그는 “이것은 보통 꾸러미가 아닐세.”하고 말했습니다. 그는 그 꾸러미의 포장을 풀고 실크 포장지와 상자를 쳐다봤습니다. “아내는 8~9년 전 우리가 처음 뉴욕에 갔을 때 이걸 샀지. 그리곤 한 번도 입지 않았어. 아내가 특별한 날 입으려고 이걸 보관하고 있었을까? 음, 이제 다 소용없게 됐네.”


그는 침대로 다가가 장의사로 가져갈 다른 옷가지 옆에 그 선물상자를 내려 놓았습니다. 그의 아내는 얼마 전에 죽었답니다. 그는 절 향해 몸을 돌리고 말했습니다. “절대로 특별한 날에 쓰려고 무엇을 보관하지 말게. 매일 매일이 자네 인생의 특별한 날이라네.”


저는 지금도 친구의 그 말이 제 인생을 바꿨다고 생각합니다.


집 앞 현관에 앉아 있을 때 저는 어떤 근심 걱정도 하지 않습니다. 저는 직장에서는 적은 시간을, 가족과는 더 많은 시간을 보냅니다. 저는 인생이란 살아 남기 위한 것이 아니라 우리의 생활 신조가 될 경험의 원천이 되어야만 한다고 생각합니다.


저는 더 이상 무엇을 보관하지 않습니다. 저는 매일 크리스탈 잔을 사용합니다. 저는 마음이 내키면 슈퍼마켓을 갈 때도 새옷을 입습니다. 저는 특별한 날에 쓰려고 비싼 향수를 아껴두지 않습니다. 저는 원할 때면 언제나 그것을 사용합니다. “훗날”과 “언젠가”라는 단어는 제 사전에서 사라지고 없습니다. 보거나, 듣거나, 할 가치가 있으면 저는 이제 보고, 듣고, 행동하고자 합니다.


저는 제 친구의 아내가 다음 날 아침에는 자신이 살아 있지 못하는 줄 알았다면 무엇을 했을른지 모릅니다. 아마 친척들과 가까운 친구들을 불렀을 걸로 생각합니다. 그녀는 아마 옛날에 다퉜던 것에 대해 화해를 하자고 어릴적 친구들을 불렀을지도 모릅니다. 저는 그녀가 좋아하는 중국음식을 먹으러 외출을 했을 것으로 생각하고 싶습니다.


이제 저는 우리들 삶에 웃음과 기쁨을 가져다 주는 어떠한 일도 지체하거나, 연기하거나, 보관해두지 않으려고 애씁니다. 그리고, 매일 아침 스스로에게 오늘은 내게 특별한 날이 될 거라고 말합니다. 여러분이 이 이야기를 읽는다면, 그것은 누군가가 여러분을 사랑하고 있기 때문이며 또한, 아마도 어딘가에 여러분이 마음을 쓰는 사람이 있기 때문입니다.



[증인]


정치적 부정사건의 재판이 한창 진행 중일 때 검사가 증인에게 공격적 질문을 던졌습니다. “당신이” 검사는 고함을 질렀습니다. “이 사건에 야합해서 5천불을 받았다는 게 사실이 아니오?”

증인은 마치 그러한 질문을 듣지 못한 것처럼 창 밖을 내다봤습니다.


검사가 거듭 질문을 했습니다. “당신이 이 사건에 야합해서 5천불을 받았다는 게 사실이 아닙니까?” 증인은 여전히 아무 반응을 보이지 않았습니다.


마침내 판사님이 몸을 앞으로 숙이며 말했습니다. “증인, 질문에 답하세요.”


“아!” 깜짝 놀란 증인이 말했습니다. “판사님, 저는 검사님이 판사님께 말하고 계신 줄 알았습니다.”
