Good morning!


Monday news sort of took me by surprise that this year’s winner of the 80-year-old National Spelling Bee, a spelling competition among mostly elementary school students, is a “home-schooled” eighth-grader. Like most winners or finalists at ‘Challenge Golden Bell’ hosted and aired by KBS TV, the 13-year-old winner, Evan O’Dorney, doesn’t have a family background of affluence. His father is a subway train operator in the San Francisco area and, therefore, his mother is in charge of Evan’s schooling.

More notable news came from Poland. A railway worker woke from a 19-year coma, which was caused by head injuries as he was attaching two train carriages. When doctors said he would not live after finding cancer in his brain as well, his wife took him home without giving up hope. She fed her husband carefully with a spoon and moved his body to prevent bed sores. He now speaks, watches TV and moves about in a wheelchair but will soon walk, according to his doctor. Needless to say, his wife’s “love, faith and care” produced such an unbelievable miracle.

This remarkable news reminds me of the movie, “Saint Ralph.” In the movie, Ralph Walker’s mother fell in a coma and the doctors were saying it would take a miracle to wake her up. At a class he heard a father say that anyone could produce a miracle if the person “truly” has “faith, purity and prayers.”


For faith, we need to truly believe in something that may not necessarily make any logical sense. For prayers, we need to be in direct communication with God, whoever our God is. For purity, we need to be completely free from sin. With these three in hand anyone can perform a miracle.

Last but not least, a 13-year-old girl from Butler, MO located a tea-colored, 2.93-carat diamond while walking with her family along a path taken by thousands of others at the Crater of Diamonds State Park, Arkansas, the world’s only diamond-producing site open to the public. She said, “I was kind of praying to God. Ten minutes later, I just found it.” FYI, the largest of the 25,000 diamonds found since the park was established in 1972 was the 16.37-carat Amarillo Starlight, a white diamond found by a visitor from Texas in 1975.

My personal experience also witnesses such events that a miracle can only explain how they could’ve possibly taken place. Who knows? Maybe we can replicate Ralph if we truly have faith, purity and prayers.

[Highway 109]

A drunken man in an Oldsmobile, they said, had run the light that caused the six-car pileup on 109 that night. When broken bodies lay about and blood was everywhere, the sirens screamed out eulogies for death in the air.

A mother, trapped inside her car, was heard above the noise; her plaintive plea nearly split the air: "Oh, God, please spare my boys!" She fought to loose her pinned hands; she struggled to get free, but mangled metal held her fast in grim captivity. Her frightened eyes then focused on where the back seat once had been, but all she saw was broken glass and two children's seats crushed in.

Her twins were nowhere to be seen: She did not hear them cry, and then she prayed they'd been thrown free, "Oh, God, don't let them die!"

Then firemen came and cut her loose, but when they searched the back, they found therein no little boys, but the seat belts were intact. They thought the woman had gone mad and was traveling alone. But when they turned to question her, they discovered she was gone.

Policemen saw her running wild and screaming above the noise in beseeching supplication, "Please help me find my boys! They're four years old and wear blue shirts; their jeans are blue to match."

One cop spoke up, "They're in my car, and they don't have a scratch. They said their daddy put them there and gave them each a cone, then told them both to wait for Mom to come and take them home. I've searched the area high and low. But I can't find their dad. He must have fled the scene, I guess, and that is very bad."

The mother hugged the twins and said, while wiping her tears away, "He could not flee the scene, you see, for he's been dead a year." The cop just looked confused and asked, "Now, how can that be true?"

The boys said, "Mommy, Daddy came and left a kiss for you. He told us not to worry and that you would be all right. And then he put us in this car with the pretty, flashing light. We wanted him to stay with us, because we missed him so. But Mommy, he just hugged us tight and said he had to go. He said someday we'd understand and told us not to fuss. And he said to tell you, ‘He's watching over us.’”

The mother knew without a doubt that what they spoke was true. For she recalled their dad's last words, "I will watch over you."

The firemen's notes could not explain the twisted, mangled car and how the three of them escaped without a single scar. But on the cop's report was scribed, in print so very fine. “An angel walked the beat tonight on Highway 109.”



[Tent]

Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson go camping, and pitch their tent under the stars. During the night, Holmes wakes his companion and says: “Watson, look up at the stars, and tell me what you deduce.”Watson says: “I see millions of stars, and even if a few of those have planets, it's quite likely there are some planets like Earth, and if there are a few planets like Earth out there, there might also be life.”

Holmes replies: “Watson, you idiot. Somebody stole our tent ….”

대부분 초등학생 간에 벌이는 스펠링 경시대회인 80년 역사의 미 전국 스펠링 대회의 금년도 우승자가 “가정학교”에 다니는 8학년생이라는 월요일 뉴스는 약간 놀라웠습니다. KBS TV 주최로 생방송되는 “도전 골든벨”의 우승자 및 최종 결승 진출자들 대부분이 그러한 것처럼 13살 먹은 우승자 에번 오도오니는 부유한 가정 출신이 아닙니다. 그의 아버지는 쌘프란씨스코우 지역 지하철 운전기사며, 따라서 에번스의 교육은 그의 어머니 몫입니다.

더 주목할 뉴스는 폴란드에서 왔습니다. 어떤 철도원이 두 열차를 연결시키려다 입은 머리 부상으로 19년 간 혼수상태에 빠져 있다 깨어났습니다. 의사들이 그의 머리에서 암까지 발견하고는 그가 살아나지 못할 것이라고 말하자 그의 아내는 희망을 버리지 않고 그를 집으로 데려갔습니다. 그녀는 조심조심 숟가락으로 남편에게 밥을 떠먹이고, 욕창이 생기지 않도록 남편의 몸을 뒤척여줬습니다. 그 사람은 이제 말도 하고, TV도 보며, 휠체어를 타고 여기 저기 돌아다니는 데 의사의 말에 의하면 곧 걸어 다닐 것이랍니다. 말할 필요도 없이 그의 아내의 “사랑과 신념과 보살핌” 덕분에 그런 믿지 못할 기적이 일어났습니다.

이런 놀랄만한 뉴스는 제게 영화 “성 랠프”를 기억시켜 줍니다. 그 영화에서 랠프 워커의 어머니는 혼수상태에 빠졌고, 의사들은 어머니가 깨어나시려면 기적이 필요하다고 말했습니다. 그는 수업시간에 한 신부님이 “믿음과 순수성을 가지고 진심으로 기도”를 하면 누구든 기적을 낳을 수 있다는 말씀을 하시는 것을 들었습니다.

믿음을 가지기 위해선, 논리만으로는 설명할 수 없는 무언가를 진심으로 믿을 필요가 있습니다. 기도를 하기 위해선, 우리가 믿는 신이 누구든 그 신과 직접 대화를 할 필요가 있습니다. 순수성을 갖기 위해선, (믿음으로 기도를 하는 동안) 결코 죄를 짓지 않을 필요가 있습니다. 이 세 가지만 있으면, 누구든 기적을 낳을 수 있습니다.

마지막으로, 미주리주 버틀러 출신의 13살 먹은 소녀가 세계에서 유일하게 대중에게 개방된 다이어먼드 광산인 아칸소주의 “주립 다이어먼드 분화구 공원”의 수천 명이 지나다닌 길을 가족과 함께 걷다가 녹차 색깔의 2.93 캐럿 다이어먼드를 발견했습니다. 소녀의 말에 따르면, “저는 하느님께 기도 같은 것을 했습니다. 그리고 십 분 후에 그걸 발견했습니다.” 참고로, 1972년 그 공원이 문을 연 후로 발견된 25,000개의 다이어먼드 가운데 가장 큰 것은 1975년 텍사스주에서 온 방문객이 발견한 흰색의 16.37 캐럿 다이어먼드 ‘아머릴로 별빛’이었답니다.

제 개인적 경험으로도 기적이 아니고는 도대체 어떻게 그런 일이 일어날 수 있었는지 설명할 수 없는 그런 일들이 있습니다. 알게 뭡니까? 어쩌면, 우리에게 믿음과 순수성과 진실된 기도가 있으면, 우리도 랠프 흉내를 낼 수 있을 겁니다.

[109번 고속도로]

올즈모빌을 몰던 술취한 사람이 빨간 불을 무시하고 달리다 그 날 밤 109번 고속도로에서 6중 충돌 사고를 냈답니다. 부러진 시체가 여기저기 누워있고 피가 사방에 널려 있을 때, 싸이렌 소리는 죽음의 찬가를 비명처럼 흩뜨렸습니다.

소음을 뚫고 차 안에 갇힌 한 어머니의 소리가 들렸습니다. 그녀의 애끓는 비명은 대기를 가르는 듯했습니다. “오, 하느님, 제발 제 아이들을 살려 주십시오!” 그녀는 꼼짝 못 하게 된 손을 풀려고 애를 썼습니다. 그녀는 (차 밖으로) 나오려고 애썼지만, 짓이겨진 쇳덩이가 그녀를 꽉 붙들고 있었습니다. 그러자, 그녀의 놀란 눈은 뒷자석이었던 곳으로 향했으나, 그녀의 눈에 보이는 것이라고는 부서진 유리와 찌그러진 어린이용 좌석 두 개였습니다.

그녀의 쌍둥이 아들들은 어디에도 보이지 않았습니다. 그녀는 그들이 우는 소리를 듣지 못했고, 그래서 그들이 자유롭게 되어 있기를 기도했습니다. “오, 하느님, 애들이 죽지 않도록 해 주십시오!”

그 때 소방수들이 다가와 그녀를 꺼내줬지만, 그들이 뒷좌석을 뒤졌을 때 그들은 거기서 꼬마 소년들을 찾을 수 없었습니다. 하지만, 좌석 벨트는 온전했습니다. 그들은 그녀가 미쳤고 혼자 여행을 하고 있는 것으로 생각했습니다. 그러나, 그들이 그녀에게 질문을 하려고 돌아보자 그녀는 사라지고 없었습니다.

경찰들은 그녀가 미친 듯이 달리며 소음 속에서 애절하고 간곡하게 울부짖는 것을 봤습니다. “제발, 내 아이들을 찾아주세요! 걔들은 네 살 먹었고, 푸른 셔츠를 입고 있어요. 청바지도 같은 푸른 색이고요.”

경관 한 명이 목청을 높였습니다. “애들은 제 차 안에 있어요. 그리고, 긁힌 데 하나 없어요. 애들 말이 애들 아빠가 애들을 제 차 안에 넣고선 (아이스크림) 콘을 하나씩 주며 엄마가 와서 집에 데려가도록 기다리고 있으라고 했대요. 내가 여기 저기 다 찾아봤지만, 애들 아빠는 찾을 수 없었어요. 아마, 안 됐지만, 그 사람은 현장을 떠나버린 게 틀림없어요.”

애들 엄마는 쌍둥이를 껴안고선 눈물을 닦으며 말했습니다. “저, 그 사람은 일 년 전에 죽었기 때문에 현장에서 달아날 수 없어요.” 그 경관은 어리둥절하여 물었습니다. “아니, 어떻게 그럴 수가 있습니까?”

애들이 말했습니다. “엄마, 아빠가 와서 엄마한테 키스를 남겼어요. 아빠가 우리들에게 걱정하지 말라며 엄마는 괜찮다고 말했어요. 그리곤, 아빠가 예쁜 회중전등을 주시며 우리를 이 차 안에 넣어 주셨어요. 우리는 아빠가 너무 보고 싶었기 때문에 아빠에게 우리와 같이 있자고 했지만, 아빤 우릴 꼭 껴안아 주시고는 가야만 된다고 말씀하셨어요. 아빠 말씀이 우리가 언젠가 알게 될 것이라며, 소란 피우지 말라고 하셨어요. 그리곤, ‘아빠가 우릴 지켜보고 계신다.”고 엄마께 전하래요.”

애 엄마는 아이들이 하는 말이 사실이란 것을 조금도 의심하지 않고 알았습니다. 그녀는 아이들 아빠가 (죽기 전에) 남긴 “나는 당신들을 지켜볼 것이오.”라는 마지막 말을 기억하기 때문이었습니다.

소방수들의 기록에는 그 찌그러지고 망가진 차에서 어떻게 세 사람이 상처 하나 없이 살아남은 지에 대한 설명이 없었습니다. 그러나, 경관의 보고서에는 인쇄체로 아주 잘 적혀 있었습니다. “오늘 밤 천사 한 명이 109번 고속도로 순찰구역에 나타났음.”

셜록 홈즈와 왓슨 박사가 캠핑을 가서 별들 아래에 텐트를 쳤습니다. 한 밤중에 홈즈가 친구를 깨우고는 물었습니다. “왓슨, 별을 쳐다보고 네가 내린 결론을 말해봐.” 왓슨이 대답했습니다. “수백 만 개의 별이 보이네. 비록 그 중에 몇 개는 위성들을 갖고 있지만, 지구와 같은 위성들도 있겠지. 그리고, 만약 거기 지구와 같은 위성들이 몇 개 있다면, 거기엔 생명체도 있을 거야.”

홈즈가 대꾸했습니다. “왓슨, 이 바보야. 누가 우리 텐트를 훔쳐갔잖아…”
